It is already obvious that Gibbs is the best player in the draft and if Pagan doesn't want him he is just digging a grave for himself. If Gibbs plays another fantastic game today (30+ possesions, couple of goals) do you think anyone in the club could turn him down?

Why would it be based on what happens today?
Probably the same reason that so-called supporters turned from hailing our future and applauding our progress after the Collingwood loss, to wanting to sack the whole coaching panel one week later.
Can anyone say Knee-jerk?
Fact is Gibbs is the best young midfield talent over the whole year, and he proved this at the U-18 carnival. What happens today is largely irrelevant.
Secondly, Pagan said he liked the way Hansen plays several weeks ago when he was thinking that maybe we would finish 15th.
Maybe this kid will be the next Dustin fletcher?
Hey Effes - where's your immense predictive powers on this one - who should we take??

I'm well and truly on the Gibbs bandwagon. Agree with BB, what he does today is irrelevant, it's what he has done over the last year or two that dictates that he is the best young talent out there and we'd be mad to pass up an opportunity in drafting him.

i agree we should take Gibbs but great under 18 players dont mean they will be great AFL players. that is why gibbs is so impressive he is not playing against kids but men and he is still a standout but that does not mean he will still be the best player out of this draft 4-5 years down the track who knows he may be fully developed and another player may still be a few years off.

Yeah but at this point he is probably the safest bet and although he is already pretty tall he hasn't really filled out.

Yeah, but he's 17 and he's been dominating against adults in the SANFL right now, which is a much tougher comp than TAC for sure.

I'd prefer a gun midfielder to a gun defender, so on the face of it Gibbs.

But I'll happily leave that judgement to the recruiters. At this stage I'd be happy with either.

Actually it's Brett Backwell that is really dominating for Glenelg, I think he got 47 possessions in one game. I'm not sure what this means about the standard of the comp but I wonder if he was still with us where he would be now as a player.

Yes my old man and I were big fans of Backwell, we always look at his results in the SANFL. Dominated most weeks.

Maybe this article may ease a few supporters minds re GIBBS. According to this report, it looks like we are going to take him #1 pick after all?

Wow, who was the eagle eye that wrote that? No offence, but unless it comes from the Carlton Football Club, or at least from a major news outlet like the Herald Sun or The Age, I wouldn't take too much stock in something like that.

It wouldn't mean anything from the Herald or the Age either. I don't think the Carlton recruitment staff have even got together to talk about this years draft yet.

Is he?

He's doing well but is he really dominating?

From the games i've seen on ABC2, dominating would be a bit strong, but i think the point is that not many 17 y.o's show that much poise and class playing against matured bodies at that level.

Exactly. He's still a kid and he's playing against men in probably the second highest comp in the country. Draft day really cannot come quick enough.

No doubt but people are going on about him as if he's gathering 30 possies and kicking 6 goals every match. I just wanted give the debate a touch of reality.

It would be genuinely surprising if Carlton didn't take Gibbs for the first pick. His onfield performances have been great and he seems more developed than his closest rivals in hansen and gumbleton who perhaps will take a few years to really make an impact (common with key position players). Whereas Gibbs seems likely to make a significant impact right away and may be able to help take Carlton off the bottom for next year.
