Came across from Perth for the game and I can cop losing, but one thing that really annoyed me tonight was how some players gave us nothing.
Goldy, Wright and Atley among them. Even Cunners was unsighted.
We have our work cut out when we can't rely on our players to perform to a level each week.
Seems it is a group of half a dozen players that fail to turn up most weeks, but the makeup of that group is constantly changing.

I really do wonder when the penny will drop with some of our players. Have the players become complacent under Scotts? Where is a Tony Elshaugh type telling the players to Get ****ed and that they are ****en *****? No, every body is a top bloke and held in high regard. :stern look

Where do you start? Where do you end?

Gibson, 2 contested disposals and 1 tackle. A streaker would have gone harder than he did. Disappointing given how he has played recently and we needed a 'leader' to stand up.

Bastinac got 15 disposals, 7 contested possessions, 3 clearances, 3 tackles and kicked 2.2 from 48% time on ground.

A lot of guys who didn't get remotely close to the contribution from a full game need to have a think about their footy, Geelong fielded a fair few snot nosed kids that embarrassed guys who are meant to be more experienced and more talented. That counts for shit if you don't go hard.

Yeah Tas, the hardness against the Cats was rot. I don't think I'm being unreasonable in asking for guys who get paid a quarter of a million per season to go in like their life depended on it? The attack on the football and the man with the football has to be 100% week in week out yet it isn't. :stern look

The last line is the kicker. Whenever you think someone needs a demotion they play a blinder, and vice versa. Wouldn't know where to start if I thought a lineup change would fix the problem.

Good example.

As above. I raised Bastinac in the Game Day thread as well because I couldn't tell whether I should be happy with how he responded from the sub or angry that it takes this kind of wake up call for him to pull his finger out of his arse. Given we lost I'm leaning towards the angry side of that equation. Some of these players appear to be both waiting for others to point out the effort required and choosing when to provide this. They're not alone across the football world or the sporting world, but too many of them at one club means none of them will reach the heights they desire. Quite a few of them need to think long and hard about how they want to be remembered post football.

Sorry Tas but I think Gibson has more than enough credits in the bank this year to have a stinker, not a good night to have one but a stinker none the less.
Its blokes like Wright who has been given a second chance and still stinks and Atley who should be a champ and isn't who make me madder and yeah it has taken Bastinac 2 games as the sub to realise that he does need to pull his finger out.
JZ is another who has patches of brilliance and then goes missing as did Cunnington tonight and although I stuck up for Patch last week he was another on the stinkers list tonight
There are definitely others who are also struggling including the 3 big forwards
The Cats were always going to come out and have a big one given their recent form so should we be glad they only beat us by 20 and not 60-70 given how many passengers we had - not sure

I actually have grave fears that many of our players are quite content with where they (and we) are at. Happy enough to have a good old time down at the footy club and just cruise through not being in a shit side, not being a shit player. But an OK player in an OK side.

Reach for the ****ing stars! Get more out of yourselves! Enough's enough, it is time teams start fearing us. 17 other teams reckon they are a chance against us, and depending on which North turns up, they are bloody well right!

Agree. This is a major issue.

Honestly, i think we are a mentally soft bunch of blokes. Too often this year our intensity and hunger at the ball has dropped off tor periods during games and been nonexistent during others. This should be a non negotiable from everyone. When we bring it we can compete with anyone but when we don't we look just like any other number of bottom 8 sides.

Maybe it's time for some leading team style honesty. Get individuals to sit on a chair in front of the group, Aker style, and let rip. A few home truths from their peers. It will soon sort the wheat from the chaff.

Scott nailed it in the presser. If you can't rely on your 21 team-mates to put their head over it each week, you are bound to be inconsistent.
It's bloody infuriating.

And if we can't rely on the coach to have the courage to make hard calls what hope as supporters do we have.

Been saying this for 18 months they are happy to be league players.

They need to hate losing, not just games but every single contest they're involved in. Luke McDonald has this more than any other player on our list which is embarrassing.

I await the spartan selection approach.

We have a 19 year old out there playing with more heart and guts than some 25 year olds.

Seriously the game review this week should be a loop of Luke v Bartel.

Unless you can commit yourself to the contest like that you will be playing for the Bees or North Ballarat.

Getting a bit beyond the joke now. In seasons past we've had some very average blokes but they gave everything they had. Now we've got better players and yet we stagnate around the same spots.

Some players need to be taken out back and slapped around a bit. Some home truths in an attempt to wake them the **** up. Adams and bastinacs effort in marking contests yesterday were laughable, especially considering they got paid good money to get stuck in.

Nahas plays like every game is his last chance now. A lot of others should be doing the same. Soon enough it will be a reality.

The bottom line is - quality footballers play 3 good games out of 4. And in quality sides, when that quality player has a bad week, the rest take up the slack. At NM, we have a lot of players who can only manage 1-2 good games out of 4, and we don't have the depth of quality to cover that player in the other 2-3 games.
The MAIN thing that separates very good footballers from average footballers is CONSISTENCY. And that applies to most sports - being able to reproduce quality on a regular basis. And until you can achieve that, you're pushing shlt up Mt Everest with a rubber tooth-pick.

Agree, agree, agree...the other thing we lack is players with the C-Factor
We don't have guys that are feared on the ground.

We'll be a team of three.

It all comes back to not having the balls to drop players and make them earn their spot back.

Brad has his 22 and unless you're injured (and sometimes that isn't even a good enough reason) you won't be dropped.

Sums it up. Nobody looks desperate - maybe Nahas and a couple of others but too many good players in the twos who we expected to stake their claim look happy running around. No pressure on the onesies who don't look too unhappy when we lose. Just looks like too few are ready to die for the team. We really look soft.

I don't mind (well to some extent) the occasional mistake by foot, marking blunder etc. but I don't want to question effort and desire, should be built into their DNA as professional athletes. Imagine Chapman for example playing like that. When we lose I want to see players seething as much as the supporters do.

Dont worry H10, the rest of the group will pound that out of him in no time:rolleyes:

This credits in the bank tripe is why we put in shit performances like this. I don't care if you are having a shocker or not, there is no excuse for not going in hard or not laying tackles.

As much as I respect how much Gibson has gotten out of himself and how hard he works this is absolutely spot on. Brent Harvey has credits in the bank, Drew Petrie did but burned most of them (and was likely in for a fair bit of this year because we have lost our depth to injury). We hand out credit notes to guys who have a good 10 weeks while the team is on fire, they need to be given to people who have shown a consistent will to perform week in week out. Cunnington has earnt credits this year and off the back of the last 18 months to let us shrug our shoulders and move on from one quiet game. Guys like Adams earn their credits and use them up in the same calendar month.

Cunners was poor last week as well, I thought he lacked hard ball stats because the game didn't require it, but two in a row is not a good sign, but that could have a lot to do with Swallow being back in the side, I hope he hasn't been pushed down to second fiddle.
