I'm sorry, but anybody who says Grunge started in Seattle or Punk started with Sex Pistols need to show some Aussie Pride.

Grunge began in Perth in the Mid Eighties. I can't remeber the name of bands, but a few of them got a mention in the recent Long Way to the Top doco shown on the ABC. Apparently Nirvana and a few of the other grunge bands have said that these West Aussies were the major influences in their music.

As for Punk, Malcolm McLaren has stated in a few interviews that it was during a trip to Australia when he discovered The Saints and Radio Birdman and was so impressed with the passion and rawness of the music that he went back home and created the Sex Pistols.

Nirvana wouldn't be as famous as they are if their lead singer wasn't a weak bastard. Pearl Jam are twice the band they were

And Jod23 I see you called Oasis a superband ....... I may have misjudged you, coz you're spot on

No Black Sabbath? No Iron Maiden? C'mon Macca, I recognize Sep and Korn are definately huge influences, but Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath got the ball rolling. You should have thrown in Slayer too, even though I don't like them.

Ten outsold Nevermind while Kurt was still alive. I admit that Nevermind came out first and Ten wouldn't have been a success without Nirvana, but don't insult PJ by saying they capitalized on Kurt's death, when they didn't.

The Hitman

Black Sabbath basically created the metal genre....the song Paranoid got the ball rolling (still one of my fav. songs). Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin all followed from what Black Sabbath started. Slayer....they didnt really create a genre, but they got Thrash fairly popular.

I wasnt saying Pearl Jam capitalised on Kurts death....you misunderstood what i was saying. Pearl Jam are generally classed as post-grunge...same as Silverchair, Live etc.

I read that Black Sabbath along with Hendrix and a couple of other earlier heavy rock Gods, were heavily influenced by D ick Dale, who many still see as the Father of Heavy Metal.

ABBA is as influential as any in my lifetime. Much more than any single group I can think of in the 90s.

Look, all music started with the old Chicago type blues bands, the N'Orleans Blues bands.

Blues is the root of all music. It starts with the Robert Johnson's of the world, continues with the BB Kings, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley's, Aretha Franklin's and so forth and so forth.

Bands like Dave & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Sly & The Family Stone, Them, The Rolling Stones, Eric Burdon & The Animals, The Doors, Hendrix, Grandmaster Flash, Chain, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Steve Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble...

All these bands defined the style, but they all lend their roots to Blues.

... and believe it or not, one of the biggest influences on **** Dale was Arab Pop Music !!!!

strange but true - if have a listen you can clearly hear the similarities.

cheers

Everything I've read about D*** Dale states that he wasn't influence by any musical style because it was all created by Aliens (Humans). He has always stated that his musical has been influenced by the sounds of the ocean (waves crashing over him) and the Animal Kingdom (the roar of his mountain lion).

Macca, I think your wrong here. The guys from Led Zeppelin were in pretty heavy bands before Black Sabbath, ever heard of the Yardbirds? Sabbath helped to creat a genre of metal.
The big point is that Slayer did not make thrash popular. Punk bands such as Minor Threat, GI, DRI, Dead Keenedys, TSOL, Agnostic Front, Jerrys Kids, Gang Green etc etc, were all playing to huge crowds before Slayer jumped on the thrash bandwagon. Slayer made thrash popular for guys with long hair.

As far as Glam Rock goes, i think it gain noterity in Australia with The Skyhooks before it did with Kiss.

After spending the past few Saturday mornings watching the Pepsi chart, you'd have to say that Stock Aitken and Waterman have had plenty of influence in music considering the number of manufactured pop bands in the charts.

Personally, the Velvet Underground, Sex Pistols, and Beach Boys have constantly come up as key influences on the bands that I listen to.

He's the one that makes you feel alright, isn't he? ;)

Seriously, the Crue weren't too bad for what they were. Tommy Lee was a phenominal drummer, and of all the co(k rock bands of the late eighties, at least the Crue are still going and true to their roots.

well...ive never heard ONE manson song that sounds anything like a Cooper song before. He is nothing like Alice Cooper anyway. If your gonna say that you could find a band or musician that has done the same thing before earlier on.

Silverchair did create nothing...they never started the post grunge style - pearl jam did that, silverchair just jumped on the bandwagon.

As for Nirvana - they were the most popular band of the grungy style - mainly because Kurt got shot...they were influenced by bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains...no way did they begin it - they just got it out into the mainstream...and become arguably the most popular band ever doing so.

Pearl Jam is part of the post grunge era - that followed from Nirvanas ending, same as Silverchair and Live

Well said Macca..

You really seem to know your music..

If I ever get a question on music on who wants to be a millionaire, expect a call from me :D
