Also worth noting that Shiel and O'Meara are averaging twice as many inside-50s and score involvements as Gaff. Not only is he turning it over heaps, he's also not balancing it by being damaging like other elite midfielders
Also missed in that little wash up is the Eagles being the only team in the comp with TWO of our supposed "A grade midfielders" being in the top ten of the whole competition for "Worst Kick Rating". Slipping under the radar is one Elliot Yeo sitting at position number 6 for the Worst Kick Rating in the competition. IMHO there are far too many so called knowledgeable people missing YEO's poor performances overall. Stats are stats and can be used in a million different ways but if a teams supposed best TWO midfielders top the entire competition list for "worst kick ratings" there can be no other outcome then trouble. It's a combination effort obviously and you can't just blame the two individuals, but no team can expect premiership success with that stat in play.

Pretty symptomatic of our inability to get the ball out into space to make a measured disposal. We are really struggling to get the ball to the outside and are hack kicking way too much.

Love this article from Glen Quartermine.

"Right now, Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has the Dockers purring like a Ferrari. They have reliability and acceleration from the back half, plenty of torque and gear changes through the midfield and are smoking rubber in attack.

West Coast, on the other hand, are like a Mercedes-Benz over the pits. It’s a smooth, fuel efficient ride when roadworthy, but coach Adam Simpson is up to his elbows in grease, unblocking the carburettor.

It might look a lot different in the rear-vision mirror by the time both teams hit the mid-season bye.

Whatever happens, supporters should strap themselves in.
By round 23, that purple Ferrari might look more like a Kolkata rickshaw."

Why would there be grease in the carby? It's purpose is to control air fuel mixtures, feeding the intake manifold for spark. Further, you'd be doing well to get more than a finger or two in the chamber. And Merc probably haven't used carbies since 'nam. Odd.

The problem with the second image is we'd be hoping those fighting against us for a top 4 have some hard games to finish the year. All of Collingwood, Geelong and GWS having easy runs suggests there may only be one spot left in the top 4 to make our own.

Some wise words from Titus

What’s wrong with the Eagles? A lot of them seem just out of form. That could be the best thing for West Coast. I’ve heard peaking later in the season is better than peaking at the start. Counterintuitive huh?

And this is just funny

Adelaide (51) v Fremantle (34)
Technically this was a game of football. In reality, it was an affront to our great game and should see both teams booted out of the game forever.
My long-held belief that Ross Lyon is out to ruin our game singlehandedly gains further evidence, making it an open and shut case now.
The only way he could do more damage to our game is by working at AFL House.
The 42,383 people that attended this should not only get a refund but compensation from both clubs for inflicting what was essentially a form of torture.
There have been people who have accidentally woken up in the middle of a significant operation who have experienced less trauma.
I could recap the game itself, but I like you too much to do so and no one involved deserves any attention.
Instead, be glad this wasn’t on free to air, it would have turned the entire next generation off our great game.

Going to be an optimistic jerk again - if I’m interpreting it right, the top graph is contested possession differential excluding stoppages?

Last season the Eagles entered finals rank last in ‘ground ball gets’ which you have to assume is fairly in line with the above stat. Now we did lift the numbers for finals and I believe won the category in each of our finals, but the point is we still churned our a great H+A season without them.

I still maintain the path forward is cutting down turnovers and having some blokes regain form.

Learning to deal with dirty ball will make us a better team though. Total football shouldn’t exclude the possibility that the ball hits the turf.

Our possession based game plan kinda falls over when we turn the footy over all the time.
Thought that this game style was abandoned in the 2nd half, maybe 4th qtr, v Pies in the qualifying final last year where the boys just got it forward at all costs. (Smitchell Gatoradegate?).
Waiting to see Jetta torpy down the middle out of backsquare with Petrucelle running on to it...not now, just a finals lever to pull. Don't want it to be known & covered early by opposition, just a surprise when the big trophy is in sight

AFL.com.au article about centre stoppage attendance and a small look at which groups are most efficient.

Men in the middle: Elliot Yeo (122 attendances), Luke Shuey (119), Mark Hutchings (94), Nathan Vardy (90), Tom Hickey (79), Dom Sheed (75), Jack Redden (66), Andrew Gaff (46), Daniel Venables (9), Oscar Allen (7), Jeremy McGovern (1)

Go-to guys: Premiership big man Vardy was named the lead ruckman in the opening five rounds until he was dropped for the Geelong loss, and Hickey is now the No.1 since the Eagles turfed the two-ruck policy. Shuey and Yeo are the most dynamic mids, with Hutchings tagging from the middle.

Most successful starting four: Hickey, Hutchings, Sheed, Yeo Clearance differential: 6 wins, 1 losses

Ruck and roll: Sheed is in the Matt Priddis mould as a stoppage specialist and has combined with Hickey for six centre clearances this year. It's no surprise the Eagles used Sheed a lot in the middle against Gold Coast, and they need to find ways to get him in there more often.

Average centre clearance differential: -1.9 Ranked: Equal 16th

Average points from centre bounces differential: +1.6 Ranked: 8th

Analysis: The Eagles haven't been a great team in terms of taking territory and locking the ball inside 50 this year, and it starts from the middle. They haven't won centre clearances since round three against Collingwood, and Adam Simpson scrapped his long-held two-ruck system before the round-six loss to Geelong. West Coast has struggled to find the right balance in the midfield since Gaff's return pushed Sheed to half-forward, although that appeared to be shifted back against the Suns. With Nic Naitanui potentially only six to eight weeks from returning, a lot could change on the run home. - Travis King

Pretty much confirms what the eye test does...more Hickey and Sheed in the middle and less Vardy and Gaff.
It doesn't make sense to have Gaff at the coal face - his strength is running.

Get him back to to a wing where he can use his natural talents.

I enjoyed this Q&A with the indigenous boys in The West.

Everyone to some extent understands the extra difficulty our immensely talented indigenous boys can have when they get drafted, but it's interesting hearing it from the players themselves and getting a little insight into what the AFL has been doing.

Massive respect for Jetts and his mentoring work. In hindsight he learned from the best in Goodes & O'Loughlin at Sydney, so it's no surprise he's passing it on.

And great work from the club, Narkle and Simpson too. There's a good chance Ryan wouldn't have been around this year and it's a testament to the man and the support around him that he's err flying now.

I like that the WA clubs seem to lead the way in a lot of this. The majority of the best indigenous players are either from WA or got their start here. It's something to be proud of and a reminder that not everyone starts with the same deck of cards. A little understanding goes a long way.

Also had a chuckle at this answer from Willie. The man who has half his family playing in the AFL.

Lewis has been the leader of the Indigenous players at the club. How influential has he been for you?

Willie Rioli: For me, personally, as someone growing up in a small community, you didn’t really know too many AFL players.

Graham deserves some credit also with the work he does with the players outside the club.

I do hope Jetta can stick around in some role once he hangs the boots up.
