When did nicknames in AFL become so bad as to basically chuck a "ey" on the end of someone's name? Where's the Deufs and Horses gone?

Also lol at Robbo - if Yeo can get back for a full season? Jesus mate it's not that hard to keep up.

Unlike Dylan, I think the new rule will benefit us greatly, as a kick mark team. The new man on the mark rule incentivises kicking in to the corridor and opening up the ground, and having the mark move an extra 5 metres in from kick in after a point means it is easier for teams to exit D50 and create a chain that results in a score.

I worry far more about the health of our list than I do about the game plan.

The rule change will assist all teams, but after observing preseason matches, I no longer expect it to have the impact I initially had anticipated - it seems teams are still able to zone out the corridor adequately and hold up ball movement.

The problem I see is that it will benefit most those sides who already move the ball quickly and use the corridor - and our ball use at the moment is neither of those, it is slow and wide to the boundary more often than not.

Whilst we may gain some assistance from the new on the mark interpretation, my fear is that it will be far less than the gains our opponents derive from it.

Our defence is already shaky against quick ball coming in, speed up the opposing movement even further and it could get ugly.

Fremantle do have a good young list. But it took them longer to build it than they should have.

Will Fremantle be ahead of us on the
ladder in 2023? Probably but that won’t mean much if they don’t strike while Fyfe and Walters are on the list. They haven’t exactly got replacements for them.

Who's going to kick their goals?

I think it's a bit of lazy analysis by the media to say Freo are up and we're down. Freo will improve in defence and midfield, but I don't see them being better in those areas then the top 4-6 teams. The big question is, how does their forward line improve? They lost depth with Hogan and are still trying to rely on Lobb and Crabener, who surely don't have any improvement left.

We have some old players left, but have already been transitioning them out and mostly have ready replacements. We have the guys to replace Hurn and JK, who retire this year. We could do with another mid, but a big part of getting Kelly was to cover for when Shuey goes. Can't replace Nic Nat but we know how to find ruckmen, and have shown in 2017 and 2019 we can create a stop gap.

I think our biggest danger is in 4-5 years when guys like Darling, Gov, Gaff will be ready to go. Sheed/Yeo/Kelly will also be veterans. It is going to be very delicate balancing their replacements given we're likely to still be in the top 8 up to that point.

The improvement from the developing talent in Fremantle's midfield will allow Walters and Fyfe to spend far more time up forward. Likewise, the development of Darcy and Meek in the ruck will allow Lobb to act more of a full-time forward, rather than pinch hitter.

Taberner, for all that we love to make fun of him, would actually be a very dangerous forward if he managed to convert his chances. If played as a deep full forward close to goals and isolated in one-on-ones, he will do enough to create problems for opponents.

Reckon they also may have found one in Treacy - looks a natural CHF, which will balance their forward line in a way that hasn't been there since Pavlich retired. Henry is going to be a very dangerous player in attack for them in future as well.

Perhaps most importantly, Longmuir looks set to clean out what remains of the R.Lyon legacy, including the defensive approach to offense.

As early as this year I expect them to become a completely different prospect in regard to their attacking capability.

Fremantle
2016 - 16th
2017 - 14th & traded Weller for pick 2
2018 - 14th & traded Neale (+30) for 6+19
2019 - 13th & traded Hill for pick 10 + other adjustments
2020 - 12th & traded Hogan for pick 54 (lol)

That’s 8x top 10 picks and 6 more in the 20-25 range or thereabouts in draft capital over a 5 year period - even after some of those picks were traded out for the likes of McCarthy, Hogan and Hill (who aren’t there anymore) they’ve used 8,2,5,17,7,8,9,14 in drafts from 2016-20

Eight top 20 draft picks in 5 years

By comparison our lowest finish in that period was 7th and our highest profile departing player was Lycett as a free agent which got us an end of first round pick in 2018.

After trades we used 13 in 2016 and 2017 as our only top 20 draft picks in that same period

So of course Fremantle have got more young talent coming through - that’s what happens when you spend half a decade in the bottom half of the ladder and lose quality out the door

Dylan, first time caller long time listener. Big fan of your analyses and insight - probably the best on this board behind Keys for his seconds input, and Dark Sharks for his repetitive meme-ory.

But let's get down to the real nitty-gritty. Take Fyfe out of that midfield and you've got some soft receivers in Brayshaw and Cerra. Let's entertain the idea that they grab the pill and push it forward to Fyfe where he is a great contested grab, but he kicks at right angles. And if he doesn't mark it, Walters will be front and square to collect the crumbs, but more likely to flop on the ground and play for a free than anything else. So will they progress beyond the bottom 6? Probably. Will a massive feather-penis like Lobbe lob them into the stratosphere of premiership contention? Probably not. Will Peter Bell continue to be revered despite doing his best work in the 90s in Melbourne? Likely.

Fremantle are on the up. But it's like saying cat shit is better than dog shit. In the end, it's still shit.

All the best, hope you enjoy a slice of polony, gee etc.

There are those who claim that Darling’s dropped mark cost the Eagles a chance to get back into the game in the third quarter. These people are stupid and are the type of person who masquerades their opinions as fact, and when challenged to back these ā€˜facts’ up will say things like ā€œfacts don’t care about your opinionā€ or ā€œ#notallmenā€.

I agree with your argument that Darling going full Darling didn't cost us the 2015 Grand Final, but I'm not sure paragraph is necessary

Well there you go, the Eternal Purple Complainers do get some media biased in their favour, it's not all a one way street for the Arrogant Eagles!?
What a giant crockpot full of mouldy mung-beans!
Lazy journalism at best, we have a raft of players coming through across the lines and as future Kpp's, not all are proven and some won't succeed, but there's a good core to build on.
Overplayed the obvious TK hand, a bit early to make that call given it was his 1st year in a new team, resettling in Perth, then being away from his family(with it's unique problems) in a covid year.
Yes, we'll have holes to fill, but not as bad as he makes out...and just because you "set sail for future success" doesn't mean you arrive there, especially with two big silly blow-up anchors!?

That article was absolute drivel, took the glass half full on the dockers and the half empty on the Eagles. No effort to actually analyse the young and mid twenties players between each club and seemed to be assuming a bunch of recent draftees would be stars. Freo would want to be on the improve after 5 season missing finals.

You know that we are going to absolutely cop it when they do eventually finish higher than us on the ladder.

I don't think it will be this year, and hopefully we get one more flag before it does happen.
