Am I right in assuming Telstra has the best mobile network to get 3G on? Both in and around Melbourne and when travelling in the countryside.

I am looking to get a new phone when the 5 comes out later in the year and want to get it on a Telstra plan where the phone cost is included in the monthly payments. Anyoen got a guess on what ill be stung?

My dad's iPhone is having signal problems. We are both on Optus and his has constant signal drop outs and weak signal where I usually have full bars and 3G. Sometimes takes a few minutes for the connection to re establish. Should he take it to apple to fix?

I'm on optus iphone too. I get the same problems, its really frustrating but that is Optus for you!

Also if anyone wants a good, cheap iphone/phone plan, look at TPG. They give you a Optus sim card and you use the Optus service but pay TPG.

I'm on a $18.99 plan and I get $330 of calls and text, $370 to other TPG mobiles and 1gb of mobile data.

I'm on the same as you bud, how good it is? I laugh at people who pay $45 a month

Not really painting the full picture. From what I can see, given that this is an iPhone thread, let's add the cost of an unlocked black 32GB iPhone 4 and a bumper ($1039). Add $18.99 x 24 months ($455.76) and you're looking at almost $1500 for 2 years. Then there's the possible reception issues that TF mentioned. If that plan works for you guys, great, but don't kid yourself that your plan is suitable for everyone.

For example:

My plan on 3:
$450 calls and text, unlimited free calls to 3 and Voda, 1.5gb data
$49.00/month + $5.00/month for iPhone 4 16GB
= $1296.00 over 24 months

That plan plus iPhone 16gb outright:
$330 calls and text, $370 included calls to TPG, 1gb data
$18.99/month + $859.00 for phone outright
= $1314.76 over 24 months

Unless, as I mentioned, we're talking about using an older handset that's already owned...

depends if you want to pay more for decent coverage, or just happy to deal with crap coverage and pay less.

Or you can pay less and have perfectly fine coverage?

Didn't realise so many people would get worked up. In all your equations, you have brand new, top of the range iPhones, that sell for retail price? If you have to have the best then good on you :thumbsu:

I bought a brand new 3GS 16gb at the start of the year for $500. So 500, plus the 19 a month = 728 for the first year and 228 for the second.

Fair call dude, I just happened to have a well-timed contract expiration a few weeks before the 4 was released...

Yes you need to have your own phone as well, but I find it cheaper to buy the phone outright. I wasn't saying it was suitable for everyone, I was just saying it is a good cheap iphone/phone plan.

I paid $320 for a new, unlocked, 32gb iPhone 3GS. So with the $19 phone plan its very cheap for me.

Just seen an ad for I phone 4 Tv Time and photo time, content can be watched on the box. Can't find it anywhere on my phone! What's it all about?
Cheers

All this talk about coverage compelled me to share my own very recent experience...

I just switched from Optus to Telstra Next G and connected on the HTC Sensation... and it was the worst decision I could've made. Why? Turns out my house (and the immediate vicinity around it) is a BLACK SPOT for the Next G Network... and I live in Brighton East!

I've tried two Telstra SIM cards in different phones (the HTC, and my old iPhone which was connected with Optus - now unlocked), and it will barely pick up the Next G Network in my own house. It will either not pick up calls/messages, calls will drop, or I just won't get them at all (well, when the reception cuts back in, I'll get messages saying I've missed calls when the phone didn't ring in the first place etc.). Worst part is that I switched to Telstra primarily for the better coverage!

So I'm about to reconnect with Optus, because I never had problems with them.

Talk about unlucky! Goes to show that sometimes, in some places, you're just stuck with Optus

That's odd. Can't be too unhappy with Optus tho. Whereas I have the worst, I'm with Three

Does anyone have an iPhone dock? I was thinking it would be handy to have a sit-in dock next to my bed, and replace my cheap alarm clock radio with something nicer. I like the look of the Sony and Panasonic ones below. I'd want AM/FM with digital presets. And small preferably.

I have a shitty little dock next to my bed and the static it gets is crazy... I leave my iphone outside of my bedroom because of it. Would a digital dock stop this? Could be a stupid question...

Anyone use an alternative app to the default Contacts? It's such a basic app, I need something more powerful. Long ago I stopped using the default Calendar app cos it too is not powerful enough.

Amongst other things, Gmail contacts has Groups (eg. Family, Friends, Work) and custom Email, Phone and Address fields. The default iPhone calendar has no concept of any of these.

I do sync with Google Contacts, but the default iPhone Contacts program is too basic to handle a few things in Google Contacts.

I presume the default Android Contacts app is better, but in my experience with various mobile systems, you can only get satisfaction by resorting to 3rd party PIM applications.

I'm looking at the same thing. I travel to rural areas where Telstra is the only option and I want an iPhone so I now have to decide from there.

And in general, is it better to buy the handset outright and the plan seperately or is the combination cheaper?
