Wow, D Hussey 52 off 21 and Ronchi 64 off 28.

Hussey 50 off 19 balls, second best all time behind SOD's 18 ball 50, and Ronchi 50 off 22 balls is equal third fastest ever.

Very impressive by the new boys! D. Hussey will be very good for our team in the One Day & 20/20 Formats. He has some definite flair for the game.

Nice win, gone from 1 run to 169 runs the biggest winning margin by us in ODI's between the two countries. Good to see M. Johnson find some form, if he could bring the ball back in to the right handers regularly he could be anything.

S. Watson man of the series, not bad for a bloke who wasn't even in the original touring party!

I hope they can find a permanent spot for D Hussey. Hayden and Ponting will come back into that side. I see Hopes didn't bowl last night, so perhaps that is a spot he can take.

I guess batting depth has never been our problem. Could do with another fast bowler putting pressure on. An S Tait back in form would be nice. S Clark still can't make the one day team either.

Make people feel good about themselves! I suppose if you were one of those who were picked out of left field, you now know they are thinking about you & your performances.

Only 15 will be going and there won't be any real surprises you would think after the demolition job they did on the West Indies.

Good to see Tait on that list. Hopefully he will come good as he has the X factor we may lack at times.

28,29 & 30 you would think! a long way off selection!

You would hope so. Imagine the hilarity if one of them snuck into the squad :D

Anyone watching England v South Africa tonight? Really looking forward to it, especially Steyn bowling on the England pitches

If I had pay TV yes! But alas no such luck, so will catch up with the scores via the net.

Hmm, I wonder if it's a big name player or some Indian domestic nobody?

Sample taken at IPL tests positive

A sample taken from random testing at the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League has tested positive, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has confirmed to Cricinfo. This is the first step of the verification process, Modi said, and there are several stages before a player is deemed to have failed the test.

The tests were carried out by IDTM, a Sweden-based independent agency, in accordance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards after the IPL adopted the ICC's anti-doping code. The samples were forwarded to a WADA-approved laboratory in Switzerland for testing. "Two days ago the IPL received a letter from the Swiss lab, mandated by WADA, which said one sample had tested positive," Modi said. "The IPL will follow set procedures from now on."

The first step, he said, is to match the identity of the player with the sample. Next, the player's form, filled out before the match, will be scrutinised for any pre-declared or prescribed drug by the IPL medical committee, consisting of an IDTM representative and Dr Anant Joshi; if that matches the drug found in the sample, the matter ends there and the player's name won't be revealed.

If the medical committee investigation reveals the player had not applied or been granted an exemption for using the drug found in the sample, the player, the concerned IPL franchise and national board will be informed in writing of the positive test that violates the anti-doping code. The player has the right to request that his 'B' sample [supplied at the same time as the one that tested positive] be sent for analysis, which he and his representative can attend along with an IPL representative.

If that too is positive, the matter will be taken up by the IPL's drugs tribunal, comprising of Sunil Gavaskar, Dr Ravi Bapat (ex-Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) and lawyer Shirish Gupte. The tribunal will study the issue and take a decision in accordance with the code. "This is just the procedure," Modi said, "as of now we are at the first stage where one sample has tested positive. The issue is now with the IPL's medical committee. The identity of the player will matter only after we check on the pre-declared drugs."

The ICC, in a release, said it had been informed of the "adverse analytical finding" and that it was the responsibility of the ICC member, in this case the BCCI, to deal with the process. The ICC stated it will "be closely monitoring the situation to ensure the correct action is taken by the BCCI", and "retains a right of appeal if any penalty that may be imposed is inconsistent with the WADA code".

Haha, probably should have known it was going to be him, then again, asif he took drugs!

:o

Asif tested positive during IPL

Mohammad Asif has been confirmed as the player who tested positive for a banned substance during the Indian Premier League, the IPL has announced. The IPL, though, hasn't revealed the drug that was found in the sample that Asif, who played for the Delhi Daredevils, provided during random testing.

The IPL compared the result from the WADA-approved laboratory in Switzerland [that tested the samples] with the data collected by IDTM, the Sweden-based independent agency that organised the tests, and confirmed Asif as the player whose sample was positive.

The IPL medical committee then scruntinised the form filled by Asif prior to the test to verify but he had not applied for or been granted an exemption for the drug found in the sample. "It was also checked if Asif had applied for and was granted a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)," an IPL release said. "It was found that Asif had not applied for a TUE. A note in writing has been sent to the player and his home board and to the franchise on the findings."

"I am shocked and surprised because I was extra cautious and never used any banned substances," Asif told AFP."I don't know what to do. I will decide the next course of action only after consultation with the PCB." Asif was detained in Dubai for possession of contraband drugs last month for 19 days and he is already the subject of a board inquiry into those events.

Asif now has the right to request that his 'B' sample [supplied at the same time as the one that tested positive] be sent for analysis, which he and his representative can attend along with an IPL representative. Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said the procedure to test the 'B' sample will take around two weeks.

If Asif's 'B' sample also tests positive, the matter will be taken up by the IPL's drugs tribunal, comprising of Sunil Gavaskar, Dr Ravi Bapat (ex-Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) and lawyer Shirish Gupte. The tribunal will study the issue and take a decision in accordance with the code.

In a related development, it is also learnt that the announcement of Pakistan's 30-man list of probables for the Champions Trophy - due to be revealed today - has also been delayed by another day. The release of the names has already been delayed from last week, after disagreements between selectors and a board committee over some names in the list and confusion over Shoaib Akhtar's eligibility.

Cricinfo has learnt that the announcement of the squad was delayed till the identity of the player who tested positive was made public, in order to "avoid further controversy," according to an official.

Undoubtedly, the PCB will also want to take some action after this and senior board officials have already indicated that stern consequences can be expected. Asif, along with Shoaib Akhtar, had tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone in PCB's internal tests ahead of the Champions Trophy. He was banned for one year, which was overturned on appeal. Asif also cleared a dope test in August 2007 ahead of the World Twenty20 in South Africa.

No real surprise with the player named, has been the subject of drugs controversies on plenty of occasions.

South Africa bat out a draw, must have been a very good pitch and some poor batting by them in their first innings. No result at Lords since our 239 run win in 2005. Flintoff has been added to the 12 for the next text at Headingley, that might add a bit of bite to the English attack.

Good to see the Sheffield Shield back.

HS reports today that it will be called "The Sheffield Shield presented by Wheet Bix"... somehow don't think the Wheet Bix bit will get much of a mention...

Great news! Never did call it the "Pura Cup", it was and will always be the Sheffield Shield!

Wheet Bix, great cereal, will have to eat more of it from now on!

Well, you'd hope not considering I've never heard of this 'Wheet Bix' thingo. On the other hand, Weet Bix...:D

It seems like Asif has been suspended by the Pakistan board. Now if only the Cricinfo article would load so I can find out how long for.

What do people think of Pietersen getting the English captaincy?

I reckon its about time the ECB showed some balls and took a risk like this instead of going for the standard English pro like Strauss.

And Pietersen takes me as a guy who'll play attacking cricket and takes risks, which is something they definitely need.

The best thing to happen to English cricket since Tony Greig took the captaincy (another South African). Totally agree with the decision but they had no other choice, given the ECB wished to have one captain for all forms of the game, as Pietersen is the only player assured of a game in all forms of the game at present. Good luck to him he will need it.

Roy Symonds...

Excellent stance taken by the team to stand him down IMO, and super impressed with Michael Clarke's press conference about it. You just can't carry a guy who's not commited to the team in any sport, particularly at the highest level.

Crash Craddock spoke in detail about the situation on SEN this morning, and sounds like Roy has been walking a fine line for a year or so now with this type of behaviour. Some guys handle superstardom well, and some don't.

If he gets himself right, welcome him back, but if not, there's plenty of depth to cover him in the Aus team.

I don't know about this, obviously not knowing the full details of his behaviour over the past year my thoughts may be not quite right, but I think we are getting a little precious with what is expected.

If I'm reading this right he has been sent home for not turning up to an optional training session which he had indicated he would not be attending, then a team meeting was called while he was fishing and not contactable which he subsequently missed for obvious reasons.

So he tried to have a little bit of me time, which probably makes him a more rounded & contented person and probably a better player for it and now he is being punished for this?

I could understand it if it was similar to a few of his mistakes in the past (eg when we lost to Bangladesh & he was pissed) but this is entirely different. I don't know the full details but if he told no one of his whereabouts and this is the why they have sent him packing, them I think they are getting too precious. But as I say I don't know the full story and there could be more to it.

Apparently there was an optional training session (which he indicated he wasn't going to), but a compulsary team meeting.

All indications are that its not just one isolated incident. Craddock said there had been little things similar to this going on for quite a while, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Did he know about the team meeting?

No mention that he didn't.

Jon Pierik from yesterday:
Clarke confirmed team management had grown frustrated with Symonds after a "handful of incidents" in recent years.
"The main concern for us as a leadership group and a team is commitment to the team," Clarke said.

"That isn't just about on the field - that's off the field, that's attitude.
"There is a number of things we believe he wasn't fulfilling."

Ben Dorries from today:
His behaviour in Darwin could be the last straw for an Australian side fast losing patience with him.
Symonds has regularly been in hot water and on the recent tour of the West Indies was fined for being late for training.
For his part, Symonds felt he was not fully supported over the Harbhajan Singh race row last summer, a situation that worsened in the Caribbean where he reportedly felt his teammates were turning against him.
As it emerged Symonds had been told to get professional help, Australian coach Tim Nielsen expressed concerns about his attitude to cricket.
"The players usually don't miss a thing and they are always early and presented as well as they possibly can," Nielsen said.
"When somebody hasn't got the information that they need or hasn't turned up on time it's usually due to the fact they're away from us and the group a little bit, mentally. That always raises concerns."

I actually agree that Symonds wasn't supported very well by the CA over "Monkey-gate", but as in all of these things, its how you respond to adversity that counts.

Interesting to note Moises Henriques, a young all rounder who hasn't even secured a place in the (wait for it)... NSW team... has been called up to replace Roy.

Apparently Australia A are in India though, and they didn't want to pull anyone away from that.
