With the betting scandal happening, do you think it is possible for some people to rig or fix an AFL game? I don't think so personally but it has happened in Soccer and Cricket in the past. I think AFL is one of the few sports around the world that is impossible to rig. What are your thoughts?

Not rig a game per se but definitely go some way to fixing an outcome of one the many side bets.

eg 1st goal scorer - can always look to pass to the bloke you have $500 on at 15-1 even though you might be within kicking range.

eg. most possies b/w 2 players - a player could bet large on his opponent and "fade out" or take himself off in the last qtr if the game is a formality.

Both are extremes, yes, but in the 2nd example $20,000 at even money might be tempting and easy to do.

Rubbish. If the top few players of any team set out in losing they will lose.

Bingo.

Just look at Carlton vs Eagles at Subi last year. What odds were given for that match and how close did they come.

If you try hard enough you can rig anything.

*EDIT* Not suggesting anything untoward happened in that game but just an example of when top players have an off day etc.

The rules are there to protect all situations, even the extremes.

One player, a win of $100K if his team loses. Has a shot after the siren...misses.

It's unlikely, it's hard to throw a game, but it can happen.

It would be hard for one player, but as weagles_fan said, if a few players got together it could be done.

Be worried if your FF, FB and Ruckman all have a shocker in the same game. ;)

Pardon my ignorance, but hasn't AFL football already been tarnished by a "match fixing" scandal, in a PF no less.
Some more educated follower may be able to fill in the details but I'm thinking of a Carlton, Sth Melbourne GF in 1910? Going off the top of my head here but weren't a few top players paid to play dead and were subsequently suspended for lengthy periods, if not life.
If someone knows the correct details, or can eleborate on this, please do so.

Ding ding - rings a bell

Sure, Like last yrs GF!

"Someone" was the bag man, Hally Bally Bolts Goodsey and a few others all rounded up a tidy six figure sum but the Weagles chickened out... had to wait till half time before could get it on and SMS them that it was now OK to pull the trigger!.. thus all the tears!;)

*ducks for cover*:D

OF course it can and probably does happen.

Haven't you ever scratched your head during matches at what a coach is doing?or how unbelievably poorly certain players are playing.

I think the coach one is the biggie. Do any of our coaches have a flutter? Roos said in todays paper, wasn't it also all coaches and administrators not allowed to bet.

agreed - not with an oval ball, 44 men chasing it, and 3 blind mice controlling the mayhem.

Absolutely anything can happen.

Rigging is impossible

Not impossible, just difficult for players. If you had 3 or 4 key players all putting in "off days" at the same time, that could have a major bearing on the outcome.

I am more worried about umpires betting on games.

The most suspicious looking game I have seen recently was the siren-gate game, where the Saints recieved 10/11 free's in the last part of the game before the siren fiasco,

Yep . . . and the infamous game in Perth.

I have zero doubt some umpires try and manipulate margins.

If you got a key forward you might be a chance.

Lloyd kicks 1.5 instead of 5.1 and it would make a huge difference on the game.

Alternatively you could back against him kicking the most goals for the match.
