Is it really necessary to have the pre round 1 bye week?

Yes I reckon it's a good idea. After the last JLT game, give clubs equal footing in terms of being equally rested. Sure there may be differences in a 12 vs 14 day break, but this is minimal compared to if clubs were playing off a 6, 7 or 8 day break against each other.

Also, we don't want niggly injuries in round 1. Let players freshen up, we are more likely to see the best players play by having the extra week.

For 2019 and beyond, 2 practice (JLT) games in early March, a week break, and kick the season off with a Grand Final replay on a Friday night in late March. The reigning Premiers host it and unfurl the flag.
