Autopsy Why is there a 23 game season this year and is it necessary?

22 games or 23 home & away games a year?

They could easily get to 28 games. Most teams have 8 to 10 players who dont get a game. The squads are big enough.
This. It would just take a cultural change of accepting that very few if any players play every single week, as we see in soccer.

I don't know of any study that shows '22 games plus a bye week is the right amount for injury recovery, fitness etc'. We have no idea - if we are worried about players getting hurt, sore or just needing a rest, we shouldn't be playing any games at all. OF COURSE, playing more games during the season will lead to more injuries, more 'managing' etc - but so what? If we want a fair draw, we have to play more games (or cut the competition back to 16 teams - withg a 2-conference system you can have a perfectly fair draw with a 2-year cycle, 22 games per season).

We introduced a 23rd game into the competition this year, purely for marketing reasons - and no one died. We changed from 18 rounds in 1967 to 20 rounds in 1968 to 22 rounds in 1970 - clubs managed it.
