Also,
Perth is the capital city of the state, home of the government, the supreme court, the army base, best beaches (renowned the world over for our sharks, they haven't heard of Fremantle)
As mentioned above, Joondalup could come in and call themselves the Perth Dingoes or Emus, Dolphins. That don't sit right with me.
Also Fremantle have a one-up on us because during Finals time and the Grand Final that main cappuccino strip/pub-club area was teeming with revellers. It was awesome. We have no real strip, make it officially Subiaco Rokeby Road or Albany Highway Victoria Park - somewhere in Greater Perth - and dress it all up Gold, Blue (ochre) and close the street.

Of course, I won't lose any sleep staying the Mighty West Coast Eagles

I seem to be in the minority hear - but I'd definitely vote Yes to change to "Perth Eagles". It only sounds weird because we're not used to it.

It's stupid the capital city of WA doesn't "have a team".

( Though West Coast makes so much more sense than "Western Bulldogs" - merge, fold, relocate - or rename yourself back to Footscray - you're not West! )

VFL.

Sons of the West,
Red, White and Blue.
We come out snarling
Bulldogs through and through.
Bulldogs bite and Bulldogs roar,
We give our very best.
But you can't beat the boys of the Bulldogs breed,
We're the team of the mighty West

Living on the west coast of the US, I fully endorse our name as I can barrack for West Coast over here and people just agree with me. :)

West Melbourne would be acceptable I think.

I remember being in Sydney for a game and explaining to a Yank that I was from WA and we had two teams. He assumed West Coast and Western Bulldogs were the West Australian sides. I'm sure he's not the only one.

How does changing our name have any baring on us having a real strip to dress up like Fremantle?

It's not like changing to Perth will mean this will happen when it hasn't in the past

West Coast gives us a broader reach than Perth

There are 5 teams further west than the bulldogs and at least 4 further north than the kangaroos (I'm not sure of the layout of Melbourne to know if any of the other melbourne based clubs are more north and I don't actually give a ****)

Just Essendon really. But North Melbourne is a suburb, they don't represent the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

West Melbourne is also a suburb but there's not much of anything there. Footscray and the western suburbs are more westerly than West Melbourne. There was a West Melbourne in the VFA decades ago as well.

Since they're trying to gain a presence in Ballarat (even further west), maybe to be consistent with the Giants' naming they should become the Greater Western Melbourne Bulldogs.

Western Suburbs of Melbourne

How far west?

Where does west start?

It's a moronic article, the West Coast Eagles were the first club from WA, they were representing the entire state at their inception.

Change name? No.

Change unfashionable jumper to something more traditional. Yes. U r also correct I do not think much of wings. Looks weird on a jumper.

I'd have thought we have one of the better names in afl.

Also Perth is too abrupt. It's one syllable. So it sounds weird.

Ess en don. Three
Syd ney. Two
Bris bane. Two
Carl ton. Two
Mel bourne. Two
North Mel bourne. Three
Rich mond. Two
Ad el laide. Three

Etc and so on.

So it sounds good with Richmond Tigers, Essendon Bombers. They roll off the tongue. Perth Eagles sounds horrible. It's like spat at you .. PERTH EAGLES!!

West Coast is far better.

I agree it's moronic

Journalists write trash like this because it creates a reaction and sells newspapers.

Changing it to the 'Perth Eagles' would be a slap in the face to everyone else in WA who doesn't live in perth. West Coast reflects the whole of Western Australia. It literally is the most Western Coast of Australia and we have one of the biggest supporter bases in the league because of it. WA is huge in terms of land. I think it's different for Melbourne and SA teams as those cities are more reflective of their state. People travel to Vic to visit Melbourne, they travel to NSW to visit Sydney. Not many tourists come to WA to visit the Bell tower in Perth. They head up North to see the amazing red dirt of the Kimberley and head down South to see some of the whitest beaches in the world. I'm proud to say I'm a West Coast fan because I feel someone immediately identifies me as a West Aussie and I'm a bloody proud sandgroper!

But yeah, please change the song
