its about the draft prospects etc. Emma Quayle goes on to say how Carlton need another key back and ruck, does she know anything about our club. We already have 2 young rucks, Kruezer and Hampson, as we all know we need a more experienced one atm. We also have an abundance of young key backs: Bower, Jammo, Waite, Thornton, Austin and Setanta. What we need is another key forward to develop or an established one, (Kosi is my choice, but thats for another thread).

Anyway, just frustrated that you try and read something about footy and its just crap, know something about the club before you comment I reckon. :thumbsd:

I heard an interview with her on SEN during the week and she was asked why she thought Watts would go at number one and her response was along the lines of because she thought he would  She couldn't back it up with anything!

She is very good with regards to the draft and predicting the outcome, she seems to have knowledgeable contacts.

For the Carlton needing another backman, well it seems the majority of this board thinks we do also because the two poles we've done for pick 6 has stated this as a fact, people want Hurley. (by the way i'm not in the majority for this one)

As for Carlton needing another ruckman, we are after Warnock aren't we?

Didn't she just finish writing a book called The Draft?

She seems to be on the money when it comes to the draft, although she also seemed to have a fair few more than 10 going top 10 :o

Yep, she did just write a book about last years draft, followed a few of the top prospects.

People want Hurley because Carlton supporters want sure things and are convinced that Hurley is it. They also think that we are not exactly light-on for midfielders and/or Ruckmen. I would bet that if Watts was a chance to get to us then he would at least be as popular as Hurley.

It is harder to lose positive impressions once obtained than it is to gain them for the first time which is why I think the popularity margin between the likes of Hurley and players like Mckernan and Johnston is greater than the true margin in their respective abilities. I personally prefer game-breaker types and I have my doubts Hurley fits that mold.

I also think that history shows that top-quality forwards are harder to come by than any other type of player with midfielders next followed by ruckmen and key-backman in that order. There are plenty of examples of effective enough key-backmen being taken late or even rookied but fewer for forwards.

That picture of Trent Cotchin and Cyril Rioli as kids was gold!

BTW is your sig in reference to The Storm's pathetic showing this afternoon?

Sure is, horrible performance.

I was out buying new kicks and left to get home to in time for the game. First NRL game I've ever made a point of being home to watch (purely on the back of the Storm's awesome come from behind win two weeks ago) and could not have been more disappointed with their performance.

Not going to be watching that pathetic code for a long time...

LOL, i don't mind it, been to a few Storm games this year and watch most of them on foxtel (mainly the replays). I'll be heading to the Kangaroos v England WC match on November the 2nd at the TD, love to go see us beat the Poms.

As a sportslover I have tried watching that code many times and can never really get into the game. The Storm game two weeks ago was one that I finally really enjoyed, but after the game today that's all gone.

At least I found some awesome kicks in navy blue and white so I've got something I'm excited about from the day :D

Agree with you on Hurley. I think it would be a mistake for us to take him. I just have my doubts about him playing on AFL standard forwards. He's always been more mature body wise than most of his opponents and been able to beat them with his footy smarts also.

agee we need a KP forward, will it come from the draft or within only time will tell,
she may be looking at it that Waite is our KP forward answer and Kruezer spending more time fwd than in the ruck for the next 2 years

hence we do need a KP back and a ruck.

maybe she could have elaborated a bit more in her reasoning.

What makes you think McKernan and Johnston are better KPF options than Hurley??...because Hurley has the runs on the board we have identified a false positive and should be looking at the blokes who might be as good ???

Hurley will run through a brick wall (or players) to get the ball, not sure the others you mentioned would.

I would draft Hurley to play CHF in front of those two every day of the week.

I've yet to see Johnston or McKernan 'break' a game, but I've sure seen Hurley do it ;)

What are your thoughts on Hurley's draft camp results Gilly? I haven't done any draft watching this year, but I'd imagine his 20m sprint time would rule him out of playing FB at AFL level.

If his major question mark is over his speed, other than his left foot, what does he offer us at CHF that Cloke doesn't?

Sometimes I think people get a little OCD with speed.

Would you prefer a player that can run 20m in 2.87seconds and can not read the play, plus is soft.

Or

A player that can run 20m in 3.05seconds that can read the play and is hard at the ball.

The ability to read the play, can make an averaged speed player seem a little quicker.

Watching him play concerns me less than draft camp results.....he has that same desire for the contest that Kreuzer has, if he sees a contest he will find speed where you didn't think he had it. While he has played the majority of his junior footy down back, a lot of it for the Knights has been at CHB. Dicko loved his miserly approach to FB and the fact he rarely lost a one-on-one contest and that's why he played there for metro. I think we have a good-un in Jamo who is about the same height as Hurley but has better closing speed and probably better speed off the mark. I have seen quite a lot of Hurls and to me he looks as comfortable forward or back.....If we drafted Hurley I imagine we would see and Waite as interchangeable back and forward depending on match-ups.

He is still quicker and more mobile than Cloke, also more natural aggression and hardness. Also reads the play as well as anybody I have seen.

My point wasn't that he is a fundamentally flawed player because he lacks speed. Rather that I think Cloke could make a very decent fist of CHF and when I suggest it the most common reason against the idea is Cloke's lack of speed. So when it was suggested that Hurley would make a great CHF forward for us, I'm suggesting that Cloke possesses all these great traits that would make Hurley a good CHF and they both seem to be lacking in the speed department.

My point is: if lack of speed won't preclude Hurley from being a good CHF for us, why would it preclude Cloke?

Sounds like Hurley is a man playing with juniors, important thing here is, will he be able to improve further to play with men. Its pretty easy to play juniors if ur a fully developed kid, I would prefer somone with similar ability however with plenty of scope for improvement as he will need it to make it in the big time.

Cheers :thumbsu:

Would you say that he's enough of an upgrade on Cloke to justify taking him and missing Ziebell?

You by any chance a Knights fan?

I like Ziebell and Hurley equally :)

Not a Knights fan per-se but living on that side of town they seem to be my default team to watch if I can't be flowered driving anywhere.
