Is the game too congested, and if so, how do we fix it?

Do we need to stop the congestion, and if so, what's the best way?

  • No. The game is like SEN after 7pm -- mostly fine.

All the proposed changes are garbage.

They will turn the game into some shit sport like basket ball where there is no contest for the ball trying to get it to look like the junk from the 60s.

The reality is that coaches will always focus on defence because it is one of the controllable elements of the game. It's part of professional sport that AFL scene seems toc want to ignore (which is not surprising that it took about 140 years before there was tactical innovation in the game).

Zones are stupid. There's a correlation between interchanges, stoppages and scores. Trend line shows Scores heading down, Stoppages heading up.
Capping interchanges at 40 would increase scoring and accuracy, and decrease margins and stoppages.

Anyone who doesn't think there is an issue with the game "aesthetics" (i hate that word by the way) should watch the replay of Melbourne vs Brisbane. That could be the worst game of football I have ever had the displeasure of watching.

My graph shows 2 things.
1. That stoppages are increasing and scoring is decreasing.
2. That while scoring is decreasing margins are increasing.

and accuracy remaining steady just above 50% through the whole time frame

but i thought goal kicking is the worst it's ever been since Albert Thurgood?

according to your graph stoppages increased significantly and scoring decreased with the introduction of the interchange cap at 120

so how exactly would dropping the cap to 40 reverse that?

What did you think of the David King suggestion? No thrown ins between the 50mt arcs

Didn't watch the game yesterday, but there was talk this morning about how Riewoltd's injury forced him to play as a traditional stay at home forward during the last quarter yesterday & the result was the Saints kicked 6 goals after having only managed 4 to that point.

There were probably other factors at play, Tigers taking their foot off, whatever, but it doesn't hurt the argument for having one or two players confined to forward 50's.

At 120 it just annoys players but nothing changes. At 40 interchanges, the players would be stuffed after 15 minutes and every team would be forced to play one on one in true positions, drastically increasing scoring.

You'll also notice stoppages flies up as scoring goes down in 2015. With less interchanges players would be too tired to get to stoppages or create them and would force a long kicking one on one game.
