As far as I'm aware they are still legal tender, as are the old paper notes.

Correct. Allowing somebody to spend them also puts that money back into the economy. Think of it as national service.

Then last night, we had a lady try and purchase $5 of groceries with 1 and 2 cent coins. :drunk:

Refused to accept that these are no longer legal tender, and in the end we let up just to get her out of the joint.

Pretty sure they are still legal tender.

Didn't know where to put this, so here will do. Thought I'd share what happened at work tonight. Gonna use Stratton_Gun's way of telling a story.

>Be supervising self-checkout
>Asian family of three come in. Have a son, maybe 18-20 years old
>They have a trolley full of groceries, as well as nine tins of baby formula. Store policy is that only four can be purchased off the one ATM card
>Tell them this

They're still legal tender, but only banks will accept them.

Fun fact: When we changed to decimal currency, other names that were considered for the new currency other than the "dollar" were "royal", "merino" and "austral".

Decimal Change Over Song
In come the dollars and in come the cents
To replace the pounds and the shillings and the pence
Be prepared for change when the coins begin to mix
On the fourteenth of February 1966.

Chorus:
Clink go the coins, clink, clink, clink
Change over day is closer than you think
Learn the value of the coins and the way that they appear
And things will be much smoother when the decimal point is here.

In come the dollars and in come the cents
To replace the pounds and the shillings and the pence
Be prepared folks when the coins begin to mix
On the fourteenth of February 1966.

I didn't know that. My mother has jars of them at home. I'll tell her to go and bank them, I'm the $8.67 windfall she'll get will be richly welcomed.

Ah, the old paper money.

There was nothing better than pulling out a pair of jeans from the washing machine and finding a drenched, ripped and no longer usable twenty dollar note in one of the pockets.

If you've been to Europe it's the same. For one of the worlds largest economies the notes used were ****ing terrible. UK was much the same too actually thinking about it.

US isn't great either. Certainly their notes are nowhere near as durable as Australia's.

Actually yeah thinking about too. I haven't been there but have had others brings notes too.

Actually can't think of any notes that are like Oz. Got damn us lack of counterfeiting currency!

Three rozzers, big boys all, wearing vests, one carrying a tazer, just turned up in paddy wagon and went into the house across the road from mine. No one was home and they pissed off though. I'm hoping for a siege later on, I've never seen one of those up close before.
