Opinion Is this rock bottom?

You look at the Geelongs, Sydneys, and Hawks of the world who have all been up for basically 20 years straight contending, and then you look at us.

It's like they are the main characters in the show, and we're the extras in the background. There just to be window dressing, say one or two lines, and make the main stars look good. Doesn't matter what season, it's the same result.

We have an old EPL/NBA situation where the equalization is so lop sided for so long you have to wonder if it's supernatural.
Epl dont have equalization unless you determine that they all have access to all the money in the UK, and Even that don't count when you have oligarchs coming in.

By my kids’ ages I’d already seen us play in 6 prelims, 5 GF’s including the ‘77 draw, win 2 premierships, watched an Elephant take off from my seat in row C on the outer wing, and a pie stand ignited which meant my mates and I were forced onto the ground as play stopped so we decided to have an impromptu kick to kick.

The elephant and pie stand incidents are unlikely to reoccur but I long for the day my kids can see some friggin’ success which sees them strutting around Melbs in their North gear like John Travolta in Saturday night fever!

They have only vague recollections of the Frank the Tank win etc.
Then there is st kilda....

That's what I am poking fun at, I never really followed it closely but I remember it was nothing but domination by Man U.

And despite all 'equalization' efforts in our sport we still haven't beaten Adelaide in Adelaide for 22 years, haven't beat Sydney in Melbourne since 2007 ffs (has to be some sort of sporting record, not just AFL), decade or near decade long losing streaks against Geelong, Port, Ess, the list goes on.

It feels so permanent and has for a long, long time. We're the George Costanza. We're the Washington Generals. We're Gary from The Last American Virgin.

Then Chelsea and Man City got bought by Billionaire Oligarchs/Oil Sheikhs. It's become the only way to compete for Trophies.

My son was born in June 2018

He still talks about the Rhyce Shaw "glory days" of late 2019

With apologies to The Boss.

I had a friend was a North Melbourne player
He was old school
He could kick that football to you
Make you look cool
Saw him the other night at this cocktail bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
But all he kept talking about was

Shawry days, well they'll pass you by
Shawry days, in the wink of a young boy's eye
Shawry days, Shawry days

In fact I think I'm going on North Big Footy tonight
And I'm gonna post till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
But I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
A little of the glory yeah
Well time slips away and leaves you with nothing, mister, but
Boring stories of

Shawry days, well they'll pass you by
Shawry days, in the wink of a young boy's eye
Shawry days, Shawry days

In my younger days I saw a premiership, a night premiership, Blight and Glendinning win Brownlows, Blight kick a 100 goals and many final wins and appearances. Saw players like Greig , Dench and Schimmelbusch. Saw the Krakouer boys in full flight. In my late 20's I saw 2 more premierships, another night premiership, saw the likes of Carey, McKernan, Archer, Schwass and Co dominate. Now that seems sooooo long ago. I feel for the younger supporters these days. What have they had to remember except misery and more misery. What went wrong ?. Will it ever turn or will we end up like Fitzroy ?

Look he is only 6 turning 7 so hopefully he won’t remember much of this nightmare but the only joy I have ever seen him really have from North was Sheezel winning the rising star and the win against Gold Coast last year

In millenia, historians and archeologists will be able to drill down into the sediment and shit, looking back at the thousands of times the question “Is this rock bottom” was asked and track one of the saddest quagmires of sports history.

Come Saturday i fear will be rock bottom. If it's 40 points or more it's just not good enough.

Then the week after has to be a win. Otherwise there's some serious rot

It’s so disheartening to come in every year excited to see North improve and expecting to see a lift in performance, skills, footy smarts, strategies, then …. Nothing! No improvement, no lift, and most frustrating of all, no effort. How can so many of the players still be so clueless and disinterested? There is something fundamentally toxic going on at the club for us to still be this limp and lifeless after years and years of rebuilding.
