First up on the block, BigFooty's favourite whipping boys Ryan Crowley and Michael Johnson.

Crowley and Johnson to get new contracts

The unprecedented test of depth being experienced by an injury-stricken Fremantle is likely to help long-serving pair Ryan Crowley and Michael Johnson secure contracts beyond this year.

"Ryan Crowley can go out, play a game and get three touches, but shut down Chris Judd for the whole game and his job's been done.

"Not many players can go out there, do that and be satisfied."

uhhh wut. Pretty sure Crowley actually can't do that.

Can't believe you guys don't remember the game where Crowley limited Judd to 3 possessions and he was given a standing ovation by everyone at the ground and a statue built in his honour outside Pattersons.

I said something similar in another thread, but seriously, if the club can't find two better players in the draft and/or via trade than Crowley and MJ they need to have a long hard look at themselves.

Two of the years biggest non-contributors.

Sloppy quoting from the Worst as always, his manager actually said

"Ryan Crowley can go out, play a game and get three touches, turn them all over and watch Chris Judd dominate for the whole game and his job's been done.

"Not many players can go out there, do that and be satisfied."

Jonathon Griffin was ruled out for the rest of the year because of a hip injury. I noticed this line in the article too.

I don't understand why the "test of depth" should either hinder or help their negotiations? Either they're good enough or they're not IMO.

Crowley I'd give a one year deal on crap money, Johnson I'd shop around. With pav to return to the forward line and another pre-season for Faulks and Clarke there's a real chance many of us won't have him in our best 21 although the coaches probably will.

Johnson is one of just five Dockers not to miss a senior game to this point of the season. The 194cm utility player has struggled badly for form in averaging less than 14 disposals a match, with his output such that coach Mark Harvey at one point conceded the rangy Docker would have been relegated to the interchange bench or used as a substitute if not for the club's injuries.

Wow, really laying down the law there Harv's.

That's the problem with Johnson, he hasn't had any form all year and has still played every game. Even with injuries there was still plenty of times when he could have been dropped to experiment with JA, Palmer, Mellington etc especially once Griffen and Clarke were looking good and he wasn't expected to do much in the ruck.

Can't see him being traded, best hope is a 1 year contract to at least keep it cheap to cut him next year. Bet it's two though .

MJ has been far from our worst in the second half of the season.

I agree he was ****ing dire for the first half, but he's lifted his game of late.

Remember how Cuddles continually backed Thornton - rain, hail or shine - only to have it back-fire when Scotty missed what could've been a match winning goal in his last season as coach? That is how the MJ situation is playing out with Harvey IMO.

Nothing MJ has done in the second half of the season, has justified him getting a free ride through the first half of the season. Nothing. He went from terrible, to average, with occasional moments of okayness.

Nothing justifies his performance in the first half of the season, same as his performance in the first half of the season doesn't discount the fact that he's played well on a several occasions, and often been our only forward looking like a viable option.

Okay, has anything he's done this year made you think, we need him on the list next season?

Given he plays as a flanker - something we will have an abundance of next season - why persist with him any longer? If ever there was a season for MJ to step up and show his worth, this was it.

Nope. I don't rate MJ as a player at all, but he's currently doing better than other blokes, so why shouldn't he get a gig before them.

Because he's better than some of his competition and has a few more strings to his bow. Makes more sense to cut from the bottom up.

If ever there was a season for alot of our players to step up and show their worth, this was it. Saying that, he has lifted his game in the second half, while others haven't.

not exactly stiff competition with our full forward being 6'1, can't kick straight or mark above his head

Not his problem. If guys like JA were putting pressure on for a place in the side this would be a non discussion.

I think that's a referrence to McPhee btw, which I don't think is justified on his performances prior to his injury.

I wouldn't disagree with you that he's been ok as of late, but it shouldn't have taken 14-15 games of complete poo for him to start playing reasonable footy, should have been dropped much earlier in the year.

Yeah, totally agree. For whatever reason (more than likely blackmail) he survived the axe long enough to turn it around to an extent. He's a lucky boy that our depth isn't better.
