Quite amusing to see threads questioning the future of certain players after we lose a pre-season game in February by a point.

Ultimately no player's future is going to be decided in a largely meaningless, glorified practice match. All you can hope for is that the players blow out the cobwebs and no injuries.

We looked quite rusty at times, particularly early when they jumped us, but given round 1 is weeks away and we were playing high quality opposition, who kicked with remarkable accuracy we should all just move on.

No point getting carried away with a game and a result we will not give a stuff about and that will have no bearing on our season, come April.

To be fair, we are talking about a lot of 13 or 14 year olds who have little capacity to see beyond today.

Those of us with the ability to think see the NAB games for that really are, PRACTICE.

I blame the Education system

Not sure if anyone remembers but st.kilda lost their first nab cup game last year.

Don't take the practice games too seriously folks.
The idea of them is to try new things give a few young players a go,execute certain game plans and thoroughly prepare ourseleves for the season proper.

Its like Kennett said 'Gee i loath this nab cup,its a lot of crap and i shudder to think I hope that we don't get any serious injuries"

It is quite obvious that the intensity on friday night was way off a regular season match. St Kilda went in without their starting midfield pretty much and we experimented heavily with our structures and it showed. The quality and intensity was fitting to a first practice hit out.

That doesn't mean you can't take anything from it at all, their are certainly some players that will need to do a lot of hard work, luckily there is a fair bit of time to do it. I think what is particularly disappointing is the fact that most of the players being written off are young players who were given a bit of extra responsibility on Friday night, I don't think anyone can expect Brown to beat Riewoldt and I am not sure what people expected of Ried in his first real hit out as a defender in the senior side. I know it wasn't a great showing but it is the first time these two guys have played in that structure. Patience is required.
