Of course it shouldn't matter. The rules shouldn't change because it's bad timing. That people even have this expectation is entirely the AFL's fault. They've previously shown that they have no integrity and will change the rules based on timing (Cotchin 2017).

I think the AFL need to set the punishment for any slurs in advance. For any homophobic or racial slurs it’s just x amount of weeks. period! The whole tribunal or discussion about the slur creates uncertainty and leads to extreme opinions on punishments.

Should be a demerit point system. Starts out with a fine. Suspensions for repeat offences.

They and I mean Dillon, made the stupid comment of ever increasing penalties for a crime. It was real lynch mob mentality and the lynch mob bought into it with gusto.

It could have been handled smartly at the beginning but it wasn't and that is a real shame.
