how the hell could he tackle without opening up his rib cage and chest to damage from the impact... Id like to see you tackle someone front on while he is being tackled by someone else both running almost full pace.. Even your boy lewis couldn't believe it.
Some people just don't understand split second preservation mode.

Further more, the possibility of doing as much (if not more) damage by being front on is a very real scenario which is conveniently/ignorantly being dismissed by some.

The tribunal is independent of the AFL & is made up of ex-players!

In my opinion they have done an excellent job this year thus far & gotten most decisions correct, including & most especially this one. Despite all the media hype to the contrary....Which is the only thing that is hysterical in this case!

Once again, Viney had the alternative to tackle & didn't. Any one who argues that he didn't is deluded!

I would like to organise for 2 95+ kg blokes to run at you at full pace and you can stand there and try to tackle them.

*Also Lynch wasn't in clear possession of the ball.

Not sure if serious

Ok, so they have come out and said he had other options and that he was not bracing for contact, now how the **** does he only get 2 weeks?

The impact was only "medium". That's possibly because they concluded that the broken jaw was partially contributed to by Georgio's head. There was also an "early plea" discount applied, since we were never given such an opportunity.

It seems like they couldn't allow him to get off, but realised that throwing the book at him was excessive.

Pretty hard to be shoulder to shoulder when you shoulder someone to the head. That would be shoulder to head. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't for one second to want Hodge to have gone for that, but this is the point ... hitting someone in the head in a contest shouldn't be an automatic suspension.

I can't fathom the logic of Jeff Gleeson saying Viney should have spun out of the way. This is not the game I fell in love with when players are being told to literally jump out of the way to avoid incidental contact with another player on the off chance they might get hurt. It all happened in a second and Viney simply braced for contact that was coming his way. It's not like he barrelled into the bloke. I hope to buggery he appeals this.
I think it's pretty clear an appeal will be a waste of everyone's time.

So disgusted with this. I don't like grand statements about the game being ruined but it applies here.

Maybe I didn't see it right, but I didnt think Lynch had the ball......so he should just give away a holding the man free kick

Pathetic decision!!! Just pathetic

Just can't put in words how I feel about the AFL right now, this league That I grow up loving and adoring is slowly losing me, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to continue to passionately support the league with decisions like today.

What a pathetic decision.

It's clear the AFL want to kill off one of the most important aspects of our game in the bump. No ifs, buts or maybes. They won't stop until we all fall in line like sheep and sit back and accept their version of the game. Sanitised and safe for the kiddies to play... I say those kids can play soccer and the AFL should leave our game alone.

As far as I'm concerned all the ridiculous rule changes and "interpretations" the last decade has only helped to sanitise and water down the game we all grew up with and loved. This decision is another of a long list of what we call "howlers"... They aren't "howlers" when that's what the AFL is trying to achieve (use it's powers to "ban out" things like the bump from the game).

The version we, our parents, our grandparents & great grandparents watched is threatened by rule changes which aim to negate the very aspects (such as the bump) which makes our game great to begin with. Leave it alone AFL. Overhaul the MRP system so we get some consistency and sit down and actually listen to the fans for once rather than just acting like you own the game. You don't own the game itself you are merely a vehicle to administer it in this competition.
Great post.

The thing I'm most confused about is, who are they pandering to?

Who are they trying to please with these just downright horrendous rule changes and interpretations?

We (the fans) don't want it? So who exactly are they trying to please?

Really hate to say it, but I reckon if Viney was playing for a richer/more successful club like Collingwood or Hawthorn, he would have got off. The meltdown would have been ten times this if it was the Pies. But I reckon they were like "Meh, we screwed them over before with Jack Trengove sling tackle/they are a lower tier club. There will be a burst of anger and then it will die down..."

Not saying that is the sole basis but would have paid a (minor) part.

Meh we fined them half a million for not tanking after letting other clubs off the hook...

Melbourne has terrible recruiting, development, board, finances why are people surprised that the legal team is any different. Going to bet they had the wrong defense.

I think a Pies / Cats or Hawks player would of got off (I.E Hodgey last year)

and Deledio got off....

"Footy is dead!!!"
The bump isn't dead yet, but from a player safety point of view it certainly ****ing should be. Why do you think the NRL banned the shoulder charge?
Sure, it was probably an accident. But one day the same thing will happen- except the shoulder will hit the guy being tackled in the temple. Basically, it's too dangerous. I will be amazed if the AFL doesn't ban the bump sooner rather than later.
Cant flim-flam the tex-man.

But seriously, wasn't he calling for Viney to get 4 weeks just the other day?

Some people should not be allowed access to social media.
It's hilarious how dumb some of the shit he posts is, but someone from the Crows should really talk to him about what is and isn't appropriate.
His twitter account is a ticking time bomb.
