Can’t be worse than getting shiels
Liam Shiels? Now that would be a shocking pick up…

Can’t be worse than getting shiels
After Shiel approached St.KildaEssendon approached St Kilda.
So clearly they see value in us taking Shiel
Ok. Explain how St Kilda, who has no salary cap strain, would be better off with that money.Gresham will be making 750k x3 years which is 2.25M and about 1M of that will be an overpay.
Plus just because you can afford Sheil doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be better off using that money in another way.
In fact you would 100% be better off using that money in another way. The whole point of Essendon paying some of Sheils salary is that you can use that money to get players that fit your list profile that suit you.
It’s not a salary dump for either team so Sheil would be traded at neutral value which means Essendon would be kicking in a few $$$

Essendon are the ones making plays for multiple free agents this year and need to forward load contracts in order to make things work for the 20+ players who’s contracts end at the end of 2024.3 options.
Option 1. Sign a free agent/make a salary unbalanced trade or two
Option 2. Extend/renegotiate contracts for players on your roster in a frontloaded manner to be paying them less in 3 years time
Option 3. Bank 5% of the cap and spend it next year. The AFL has a mechanism that allows you to spend 105% of the cap in one season if you banked the money the previous season. That’s about 700k at the current amount.
Edi: you’re also ignoring that to Essendon Sheils contract is sunk cost and they have the space to do everything they want to do this offseason. So it’s of 0 value to Essendon to dump the contract.
Only a very select few would be costing us a significant amount in 2024 (Archie Perkins, Nic Martin, Jye Caldwell, Sam Durham, Nic Cox), even then a fair few of those are still only marginal upgrades not commanding huge salaries.Essendon are the ones making plays for multiple free agents this year and need to forward load contracts in order to make things work for the 20+ players who’s contracts end at the end of 2024.
Or he is missing a screw...I'm convinced the shiel gresham thing is Jon Ralph being bored and wanting to screw with us.
Contracts have already been forward-loaded in previous years. What you're suggesting, isn't it.Essendon are the ones making plays for multiple free agents this year and need to forward load contracts in order to make things work for the 20+ players who’s contracts end at the end of 2024.

Dylan Sheils contract expires this season so the money gets free’d up for then anyway. Don’t need help with that.Essendon are the ones making plays for multiple free agents this year and need to forward load contracts in order to make things work for the 20+ players who’s contracts end at the end of 2024.
Gresham will be making 750k x3 years which is 2.25M and about 1M of that will be an overpay.
Let’s say 450-500k. Gresham is an above average SF but I wouldn’t say he’s a world beater. So you genuinely believe that Gresham is only worth $450 K per year? If so, why on earth would the Dons even be chasing him then?
A player signing a new contract for 2024 will be at higher $ than in the last period.Let’s say 450-500k. Gresham is an above average SF but I wouldn’t say he’s a world beater.
Why chase him?
Last seasons Essendon's SF options were Matt Guelfi, Will Snelling and Jye Menzie and a few small mids who were worse SF options than those three.
A competent league average SF would be a significant improvement.
A player signing a new contract for 2024 will be at higher $ than in the last period.
Gresham would not be swapping clubs for $420K per year.
So the question was if Essendon was only going to offer such a lowball offer why waste everyone's time?
Gresham is already earning more then 550kIs it really so hard to understand that a players contract doesn’t always reflect their on field worth?
Sometimes teams get a bargain, sometimes they overpay.
In the case of Gresham he has less value to St Kilda than other teams because you already have 2 really good SFs. The Saints offer to Gresham was likely so low that his management asked them not to make an offer.
Essendon and Hawthorn both made offers in line with market value, that competition might have pushed things up somewhat. Maybe 550k. But It would still be nothing close to 750-800k a year for band 1
Every party here is trying to get the best deal and not just handing out contracts like candy
Gresham is already earning more then 550k
It’s his last “pay day”
Do you think he is going to take less?
If you think we low balled him on an offer so low that you can swoop in on 550k a year you are dreaming! What Gresham wants and what a team is willing to pay are two very different things.
Doesn’t really matter what he’s earning now. That contract was signed in the past. What matters is the present day contract AFL teams are willing to give him.
We dont know if the Croft, Rogers, McCabe bids come ahead of that pickCan we stop pretending that its pick 13. Per both Twomey and Draft central its pick 19. 5 bids and Norths McKay compo.
St Kilda receive:
- Shiel
- Pick 27
- Future 2nd
Essendon receive:
- Gresham
- Pick 13
Reckon this will satisfy all parties.![]()
I am as sure as I can be that McCabe will be well after 13. I think Rogers and croft will be too, but twomey and others (who are pretty accurate) think they will be around that mark.We dont know if the Croft, Rogers, McCabe bids come ahead of that pick
If you think we low balled him on an offer so low that you can swoop in on 550k a year you are dreaming!
Ralph saying again a late pick for shiel and 13 for gresh. Maybe even essendon paying some of his money.
