We should be able to find someone with Kings mindset but with better skills in a lower league. Webberley and Nason are ging alright for us lets try and draft a few more of these types of players.

If true the coaching staff obviously think that in a good side he would still have a role to play or still provide some depth/experience for when Jacko gets rubbed out in future. Yes he is a battler, but as long as he has a role, they should keep him on. Clint Jones and Liam Picken would both look pretty average in a Richmond jumper, but both play important roles in top 4 teams.

Surpised by him getting two years, one year would have been my preference, but he defintely deserves to stay on. People who say otherwise probably need to let go of the grudge, he has been very good in the 2nd half of the year.

King is our Steven Baker in that he is a player who isn't that highly skilled, but will do a job for you on the oppositions better players that allows our better players to worry about going out and getting a kick. This is why Hardwick likes the guy, not because he can roost 50m goals off either foot or can hit a teammate on the tit with a laser from 45m while in heavy traffic.

Like I said King isn't the most talented player on our list but he is one player who can be relied upon to do his job week after week and until someone comes along and knocks him out of the 22, I'm quite happy to have him running around.

Quite right. Give King a game at Geelong, Hawthorn, StKilda and he'll suddenly look like a much better player. Take Mark Blake or Tom Lonergan or Wojo, Varcoe, even Enright, Mooney, Hawkins and probably a few more, and put them at West Coast and they'll look pretty ordinary.

If the rest of the side can apply themselves to their respective and varied roles as much as Kingy has then this will be one hell of a team. He isn't going to single handedly lift us up the ladder, but his example may inspire those who can.

I don't think it's a matter of whether an 18-year-old can replace King, I thought that's why we recruited Nason and Webberley. Both are definitely upgrades on King and White but there is no way we can continue to play four of them in one side and expect to get anywhere.

I am surprised the club would be doing anything re King's contract at this point, before any potential trades are done and we have an idea of what our final list will look like. Surely King's contract could be the last thing done given no one will poach him. I'd even thought we could delist him and re-rookie him safely enough. I love his combativeness and think he is good for club morale and in setting standards but he's no Steven Baker.

If the second-year option is the club's then a one-year deal is not too bad I guess. Doesn't bode well for the Cuz though.

How's this for his comparison....Campbell Brown. Think of the reverence that thug gets compared to Jake? It's a disgrace.
Against Geelong Brown had 98% game time and got 6 touches. And they were Jake like touches too!
JK is an ordinary decision maker and turns it over a lot but the hardness and stopping facets of his game mean there is some value there.

My pet hate is "his" for "he's"... It really is quite inexplicable how many people get that one wrong. The number of times I see it makes me wonder if there was a huge shift away from teaching spelling between when I was at school in the 80's and more recently.

Anyway, 2 years seems a stretch for me. I doubt too many clubs would have been in his ear trying to poach him from us if we offered him just 1 year. I also would have left the decision until the end of the year, as who knows what could happen between then and now.

According to some reports I've read already a number of recruiters are suggesting that this draft isn't that great in terms of late round depth, especially with GC already having taken a dozen kids that would have been in the draft then GWS taking another bunch of kids that would have been bottom aged kids as well.

Given we're looking at cutting upto 8 players come seasons end I don't think we're going to find great talent with picks in the 70-90 pick range like we did this year.

As mentioned in the OP, the deal reportedly is 1 year with an option for a second year, if King stagnates or goes backward next year the option for a second year won't be taken, as such I don't really see what the big deal is in keeping King for 1 more year
