If there is any truth in it, I think Jake will find that somewhere in the fine print or the legislation StKilda don't have to pay him. In which case his recourse will be to sue his former club.

What is the chances of an athlete suspended for breaching the code of a sport suing for payment?
If a hypothetical player killed someone and went to Jail would we expect that their club payed out their Salary?

While we didn't think it would actually happen, a doping suspension for Carlisle was discussed as high as board level before we traded him in. We covered ourselves with the legal side in case it did happen.
Now, I'm not saying Jake won't take legal action against us (I'd be stunned) but if it was me in his shoes not being paid then I'd employ a lawyer without hesitation. The Saints (and Dees, Dogs, Power) and AFL have had discussions with Essendon about them footing a large part of Jake's salary for this season. Things were looking positive but have come to a standstill because of legals on Essendons side.
Right now, as far as I know, Jake is a happy (considering circumstances) Saint and will be back as a full time player by time this season is done.
Also, if you know anybody involved with an AFL club ask them what the opinion on Damien Barrett is. A bottom feeder of the highest order. He believes he is the reason the footy world exists.

Fyfe isn't leaving though is he. I would be extremely shocked if Hooker is a don long term and I reckon Hurley rumours sound like he's gone too. If they are looking and you offer the right money especially Hurley would be a real possibility. Now we have Carlisle it's a moot point, we just were unlucky with timing.

If hooker leaves I think it will be to return to Perth. I think we had more chance to get him because we can offer more money than 90% of the comp. Of course we didn't know, that's why it seems unfortunate timing. Like how the coke drama happened the day after signing him was bad timing. It just makes me shake my head the way **** ups seem to follow him. We are in no position to cherry pick our recruits. Not going for Carlisle last year because there might be a slight chance that 1. Hurley decides to leave Essendon and 2. He wants to come to a rebuilding club like St Kilda. Believe it or not, money is not the only reason players change clubs.

You have to strike while the iron is hot, we were very lucky Carlisle still wanted to come to us after Hawthorn showed interest, but who says Hurley would make the same decision?

i know people with AFL players in the family who have 2 clubs rather than bailing completely. All back their own over tradition though generally.

Carlisle is a better footballer than Hurley and certainly better than Hooker.

2 years ago, where Carlisle is now, Hurley was lost as a player and made the Watts/Vickery/Hurley draft look like a real bust for KPP.

18 months on and he's a gun who settled in his position and in demand (drug bans aside)..

Through the early stages of his career he had never shown anything close to the level Carlisle reached as an under 22 y.o.

I am concerned about Carlisle being away from the club and it's going to be a long 6 months until he's back in the fold, but if it all goes to plan and theres no off field/legal hiccups, he is going to be a very very good player for us and will put Hurley in the shade. As for Hooker, it's not even worth mentioning. Even Jade Rawlings had a good 2 year patch. Doesn't make him elite.

Correct. How many games did bj play for Carlton.

Carlisle was a Bulldogs supporter and wouldn't even meet them last trade period.

Well if my young fella gets drafted in 12 years time & it's to a team other than StK, I would obviously follow his team closely...but my heart will ALWAYS be RW&B.

If it's $, success & facilities guiding Hurley's decision then we're a better chance than I thought.

I have said before Francis and probably Ryan Clarke or Gresh if still available. Even Matho at our second was a good get. There was actually some fair talent later on even though it was a bit of a crap draft apparently.

It's totally hindsight but I thought the club let us think we would get Jake for a steal but we paid a pretty much fair market value for him in the end. If he'd waited 24 hours to sign he would have been cheaper and cost us a second round pick. So far he's been more trouble than he's worth, he hasn't played a game and is going to be off his best for another year. He is a good player but so far everything he touches turns to shit and the timing is unbelievable. I wish we'd let the Hawks have him now.

For a supposedly crap draft they are showing a bit. Partington has already been resigned, Carlton should sign a ten year contract for Weitering now, Clarke showing a bit at North, Scache and Mathieson ticking all the boxes at Brions (apparently will be even better than Joel Selwood...at attracting free kicks) and I think there are others like Gresh, NOK, Tucker who are shining.

Say we didnt trade for Jake Carlisle. Who would we have taken?

Pick 5 became pick 6 after the Swans matched Demons bid on Callum Mills.... So that leaves Francis, Ah Chee, Milera, Gresham, etc

Pick 24 became pick 29 after all the early Academy bids were matched..... So that leaves Morgan, Redman, Hibberd, Sier, Clarke, Bonner, Balic, Mathieson, etc

Our 3rd round pick shifted down from around pick 44 to Pick 40 due to other clubs picks being lost though academy bids & we took Brandon White

Are any of those possible combinations actually better than Gresham, White & Carlisle?

In all honesty if we had those picks I would have chosen Aaron Francis, Mitch Hibberd and Mitch Brown at the time (and possibly picked up Ben Crocker later out of those left).

Given that Francis could play forward or back as a medium third tall certainly would have it's merits. Hibberd would give us a tall, skilful outside mid or winger who, like Francis, is an excellent kick, and we could certainly do with more of that.

We needed at least one tall who wasn't a rookie and Francis is only 190cms, but gaining two 190 cm players who could play midfield would have been a bonus as Hibberd is that size too.

Brown seems to have a way to go given his performances at Essendon so far, but he has talent. Still probably happier with Carlisle to this point though, even given everything that's transpired.

Would not have been able to fulfill Rice's wishes to come to us unless we borrowed from the future or had taken him at 40, which could have been paying overs. As it worked out, had we taken Rice at #40 and Michael Hartley or Jesse Glass-McCasker at our 4th pick it still could have paid dividends.

So would I have been any happier with that than getting Gresham, Carlisle, White and Rice ? Not sure, but hindsight is a wonderful thing, just not based in reality unfortunately.

Gresham and Rice were bargains and fulfilled needs. With Gresham at #18 we got someone who may equal whoever we would have picked at #6. Gresham is more pure mid than Francis or Hibberd. After Richmond bid on Rice at 49 we were able to afford him with the discount. Glad we didn't have to mortgage the future for him or miss him altogether.

Carlisle and White were worth their value, at least at the time. Just unfortunate that Carlisle couldn't immediately maintain his worth. White I'm very happy with at pick #40 as he could be that pacy winger we needed and he's not small.

Acknowledge we could do with another tallish mid but we seem to have options in this year's draft wherever we land.

Notably we managed to fulfill all our key needs (if you include Freeman), stayed loyal and kept our commitments, AND never even tried to screw anyone over.

If the question is really "Could our recruiters have outdone themselves if the Carlisle news had broken in time for us to pull out?" - then maybe yes. Francis, Hibberd, Brown and Crocker would probably look mighty fine too ....

.... but we wouldn't have been able to savour Gresh "lovin' life", Whitey being "stoked", Bailey's family story and Jake's transformation. (Not to mention Nathan's bid for freedom.)

WADA would have to be the biggest idiots in the world to think the players aren't getting told what to do etc. so this is really nothing surprising.
