Looks like many of the conversation and concerns from this year will return in two years' time.

Yep, like what will happen at 17 other clubs.
Funny thing that!

Just so i get this right…

We have just re-signed one of the best young defenders on our list for another 2 years, in the face of some competition externally, and the first thing out of your mouth is a complaint about having to do it again in 2 years….

If we'd lost him the boots would have been into the club for that too…

You do understand that to support the club means to actually support them right..?

Sad…

I'm sorry, I really don't understand the issue with the post. I wasn't "sticking the boots in", putting the blame on, or directing vitriol at any individual actor. It's great that Kolo, Motlop, and many others have signed. My post was a simple observation that these shorter contracts mean that the off-field scrutiny we've been through this year will return next year, and I find that frustrating, though certainly not as much as I would have had the players not been signed at all.

People are very good at inferring something from a post based on their own prejudices rather than what is being said. My post was never intended as a critique of the club. Sometimes you can lament a situation without blaming anyone specifically for it, and sometimes you can have and express thoughts that are completely disparate, like Kolo re-signing, which is good, and the fact that we will again have many players out of contract come the end of 2017, which will evoke much discussion and scrutiny by the end of next year, causing a little bit of angst on my part but perhaps not yours.

When discussing good news in the future, I will make sure to preface any personal lamentation or concern I have with comments that recognise the positive outcome, because the fact that I have been saying for a long time what a loss Kolo would be and that it is imperative the club sign him could hardly be enough to convince anyone that my reaction to his signing would be positive. I couldn't ask that anybody assume anything of me, however, unless they assume I'm taking a shot at the club or being incessantly cynical, which people tend to be very good at.

Not unhappy with this. Glad Kolo has signed. Not unhappy with or directing any criticism towards the club for the way it has handled this or any other contract, because a number of factors contribute to the contract negotiation process, meaning the short length for some, in order to keep them around for the next couple of years at least, is necessary. However, simultaneously, I wish that weren't the case.

The funny thing is every player has these contracts style discussions and uncertainties every 2, 3, 4 years. So just like all other players we'll have this discussion again 2 years from now but for the next two years I'm just looking forward to seeing Kola develop.

Just like I'm going to enjoy watching Mots play and if in 2 years time he angles to leave so be it. Cross that bridge at that point, but enjoy his football in the meantime.

I see Lonners getting eased out and Henderson moving in to that area... but initially I could see Hendo starting as CHF as the transition for Doms out starts
Yes I see my post was ambiguous. When I said Lonners makes way down back I was meaning pushed out of the side, not to go forward himself.

I agree that longer deals would be better, but a longer deal is no guarantee that a player will a)stick around or b)be happy and motivated.

The way I look at Motlop and Kolo deals, is that both the players and the club think it's fair to review the situation in two years. If either the players don't deliver, or the club doesn't deliver then there may be a parting of the ways. In some respects I would prefer that to a player agitating for a move half-way through a long contract because they no longer believe.

With some luck and a lot of hard work, I hope that the decision to extend with the Cats in two years will be a no-brainer for there two guys, and the others.

Fair points and your post was clearly factually based - these conversations will be had again in 2 years. Wont and can't dispute that. And it will be difficult with the number of contracts arising at the time. No doubt.

Fair also that you post was not considered in isolation - but read in isolation with your previous critical tonal note (which is your right I might add) in mind.

So no, you don't have to post anything with exceptional glee at release of good news. You can express whatever and however you want (within board tules of course which you clearly were and are)

In the same breath however, its hard to take something on face value or in isolation when, over the journey, many of your posts have been one of criticism (warranted or otherwise). To then expect others to not apply the similar vein of criticism to a stand alone post is not unexpected.

Just as people think and expect me to be 1/2 full all the time. There are other long tenured posters here that I have to read three times now to try to ascertain whether the post is as stated in print or actually sarcastic in context - not as the stand alone post cannot be read on face value but the poster has such a history of said sarcasm that you can't be sure anymore.

We are both glad that Kolo has re-signed with the club. And i''ll work on calibrating my BB happiness expression meter to suit your posts going forward.

I know you worry about players being un-signed so late and I too have similar worries about these things. I've seen you post this year about signing our best players first, I think it might have been when Smedts re-signed that you questioned why it wasn't Mitlop or Blicavs, just shows that some things take time and players like Billie who are simply grateful for a contract get there's done sooner. It is hard to not worry, we're all emotionally invested in this club but I take solace from Cook being at the helm and being ably assisted by Hocking and this gives me confidence that even if players aren't signing as quick as we'd like that they have a good handle on it.

So Bundy aside who else has walked out in the club recently? I'm not talking we've pushed or delisted. Who has actually walked out? Would have to be GAJ. Point being despite all the rumblings and late contracts we have a pretty good track record with retaining players.

Nothing worry with timings of those signings...Smedts clearly one of our best ;)

I actually still have belief that he'll make it still. Just hope they play him forward of centre where he's better suited.

I don't mind young talented players who have spent a year or two in the VFL, signing short term deals.
The impression I get is they want to stay but they don't want to spend another year in the VFL. Kersten signed a one year deal, Thurlow signed a one year deal. That showed they wanted to stay, they could have left for more opportunity.
As Kolo was spending a year and a half in the VFL, there was still talk of Rivers potentially going on next year, and Henderson coming in in 2016. No wonder Kolo wasn't signing a three year extension.
Then Kolo got in the AFL team, and Rivers confirmed that was it, and now he's signed.
Thurlow signed for a year.... Established himself and has now extended for three. Not worried about two years for Kolo. He sounds excited and happy.

Great news that Kolo has re-signed with us. Would've preferred three years, but I'll take what we can get.
Probably a bit the same as Thurlow when he extended for 2 years. They know their value will likely go up significantly after two years of solid senior performances, 3 years and they are leaving $$$ on the table.

Just went back and watched some more JK vision.

This bloke is gonna be a monster for us.
He has that look of Scarlo when defending, either hand, as 3rd man up or 1 on 1. His ability to judge the ball in flight and position himself to kill the contest is just fantastic. And he's a brut of a bloke.

Im gonna go full Ken Bruce here but he could easily get the next HT type deal from us. He is remarkable composed and not panicked when clearing the D 50.

Now, having said all that - he's gonna have stinkers. And lost of them. He's gonna make mistakes, and more than once.

But i'll say this much. For every cent we pay Kolo, Scarlo needs a penny too. You can just see the influence in him. And its paying off. Long live the bull.
