Past James Hawksley (2007-2012)

The new recruits (especially Maguire and Raines) have made it hard for Hawksley to keep his spot. Johnstone being trialled in defence makes it even harder. Judging by the team selection thread most people seem to think he'll be back in the reserves.

Which is the place where a player can improve, shine and force his way back into the seniors

I reckon he's a really promising footballer.

I would describe him as 'reliable' rather than 'promising'. He rarely makes mistakes but doesn't really cause the opposition many headaches either (at this stage). He would probably be battling for a spot in any of the top 8 teams.

To be honest i rate Hawksley very highly but he is also the sort of player who needs about 6 pre seasons to get the body and strength required to be a good AFL player. I hope the club sticks with him regardless of the games he plays this year, as his strength and body develops so will his ability to play in all 3 parts of the ground.

vs Gold Coast

Brisbane’s early dominance was due mostly to James Hawksley, who has made a compelling case for a call-up to the seniors next week.

Great win tonight, but Hawksley is looking a bit shaky down back. Gave away 2 gimme goals after giving away one last week. Was alright apart from that, but good defenders almost never make those types of mistakes.

The Lions kicked another goal soon after and looked to threaten before a costly mistake by James Hawksley gifted Barry Hall his fourth goal, just 20 seconds from half time.

“I don't think we need to highlight James, I am not big on criticising mistakes,'' Voss said.

“That was just a skill error, if he had that 10 times again he would mark it 10 times.''

He did make some simple mistakes, but it is still early days for Hawksley, and he is yet to cement a regular spot in the seniors. Merrett was no different, and even now can give off a bad handball down back. I agree with Voss with what he said in his post match media conference about Hawksley, which was he wasn't worried about it and didn't see the need to highlight it, Hawksley already knows he stuffed up. The important thing was that it was just a skill error and not a decision making error. If he did that again 10 times he would take the mark 10 from 10.

I really like how he had a very solid 2nd half. As a young guy those goals he gave up could have really shot his confidence and kept him down for the game. Very promising signs i think.

He turned things around nicely in the second half, but will surely make way for Ash regardless.
I thought he was great defensively. In fact, you take those two errors away and he's had a good game. Still, those mistakes could have been match defining.

He is probably fortunate that we have won (both this week and last week). Those Roe-like mistakes can be real confidence killers, with players working so hard to play their part within a structure, only for goals to be gifted to the opposition.

Good on him for keeping his head up, but it is not something he will continue to get away with.

Hanley is by no means a lost cause. He was the travelling emergency last week and was named in the best again yesterday. I think Vossy rates him. I'd mbe bringing him in for Hawksley who needs to get some confidence back and work on his decision making.

I didn't think Hawksley was doing too badly. Not necessarily last night's game, but overall I think he's progressed over the year.

I agree Grim, im a bit of a Hawks fan, and yeah he made some blues last night and cost goals, but so did a lot of other players. I think he is developing well. Maybe struggling with our defense so depleted.

Made a couple of telling defensive efforts and spoils on Saturday night.
And gave away multiple goals with errors that wouldn't be satisfactory at Auskick level. And not for the first time. He has shown some reasonable signs as a defensive stopper but his tendancy to give away multiple goals because of basic mistakes needs to be addressed.

If there was a stat for opposition goal assists, Hawksley would have to be close to leading it.

Don't get me wrong, he is coming along in many ways, he is hitting the ball at full tilt coming out of defence and his defensive work is getting better too, but his errors have the uncanny knack of resulting in momentum shifting opposition goals.

At first it seemed just like bad luck, but it just keeps happening.

I agree chopperduck / grimreepah,

Hawksley reminds me a little of Robert Copeland and I think with a full compliment of backmen around him, he will become a very good 'run and carry' type halfback flank.

He is one player that I think we do need to persist with.

Not far off the mark. Hawk is reading when to go better than most of our defense, he's just not getting a) backed up and b) the bounce of the ball to go with him.

He is just being asked to perform better than he is capable of ATM with the injuries we have. Will probably be a lot better for the experience though. I counted many goals given away by silly mistakes around HB by the likes of Selwood, Power and Sherman as well. He seems to have the heart of a defender though.
