Just seen this, so not sure if it's been discussed yet.

How big of a blow would this be to us?

****ing amen!

We need a better forwards coach. 90 games as a defender for 11 goals.

Maybe we can get an actual ****ing forward to coach the forwards?

Isn’t Boris the forward coach? Your criticism might equally apply but at least Boris was a gun.

I thought Rahilly is/was - I don't mind Boris as a forward coach because he knows what he's doing.

Rahilly was at one point at least, which is laughable - and as such is no huge loss to Geelong

Out of curiosity what has he been developing because we sure as sh*t dont have anything that i would call developed when it comes to youngsters?

Was going to say this. His LinkedIn has him as head of development - that makes his departure even better news.

"Let's develop our talent by not playing it"

Wow you’ve really soured this week!

This is from his profile on the Geelong coaches page - seems his been a bit of everything during his time

Interesting if he's LinkedIn page says head of development as we've had Scarlett, Enright & now Griggs as our development coaches since 2015. So does that mean Rahilly was overseeing them and they answered to him or something?

James Rahilly

Playing career
Geelong: 90 games, 11 goals

Coaching career
Geelong: Assistant coach (forwards). Previously assistant coach 2010-2015 and VFL assistant coach 2008-09.

COACHING HISTORY
James Rahilly stepped into a full time role with the Cats coaching group in 2010 after working in 2008-09 on a part time basis.

He has established himself as a key member of the coaching group, with his knowledge of the game and forthright views a critical element of the Cats successful coaching mix. He was a key member of the coaching group that masterminded the 2011 premiership win.

Rahilly’s previous two seasons saw him working as a specialist coach with the playing group and as an assistant coach with the Cats VFL unit.

Rahilly filled both roles successfully in 2008 and 2009, working mainly with the club’s young players.

He served as an additional set of eyes for the coaching staff throughout the 2009 AFL finals campaign from a behind the goals vantage point.

----

I'm not upset to see changes within our assistant coaching ranks, especially turn over with our longer term assistants - happy to see some fresh voices and ideas bought into that side of things

Good luck to Rahilly with the new gig

I was thinking the same thing... McCartney was a big part of our recent successes.

Bmac was on KROCK and I asked K rock Football to see if he would come back...

He is not interested in that position in the AFL world again - it not just us - its a global thing for him.

Now Smithy on the other hand... get it done Geelong... Get it done now.

McCartney had signed on to coach the Falcons girls team this year - obviously not much playing went on with that

But that seems a great role for him - get one of the great development coaches to work with the underage players prior to them being drafted

Meh to both. Fresh ideas with fresh voices please.

Both have been here, let them spread their wings elsewhere

I love Joel, nicest bloke in the world, but I'll go with no.
He's not really somebody to stand in front of a group of guys and hard word them, he's too nice.
I mean in the real world that's a fantastic personality trait, but not for coaching IMO. You need a bit of campaigner about you.

What does that have to do with him? He's not the MC or the head coach. His job is to get them ready for the AFL environment, not select them in the team.

Stevie J would have been the one...

Don't think anybody's prising him out of Coathanger City - lifestyle's too good!

But you're absolutely right. He's a bit of a peanut, but he's also intelligent (beyond footy) and competitive AND he had a fairly "rough landing" I to the footy world. He knows about adversity

Came here to pay tribute, genuinely shocked. What a bunch of horrible people this forum has become. Genuinely disappointed. He's been with the Cats since 1998. 22 years. Celebrate his contribution.

He won best clubman, top guy to chat to. Injuries ruined his career (finished 2005) and he never got to play finals. You aren't useless if you're involved in the Cats for the past 15 years. The Cats are pretty happy to move on underperformers (hello Balme).

Compare the club of 1998 to 2020 and he must have played some contribution to that. All the best in Adelaide.... even if the 7 news guy mispronounced his name.

Thank you for putting things back in perspective.
