What I've seen of Bewsy I've liked. I also like that he's put on a tonne of muscle since joining the club. However he doesn't really seem to be in many people's minds, and there seem to be doubts about whether he can make it at AFL level.
Definitely been troubled by injury, but seems fit now and was named in the bests in the VFL practice match.
Anyone who has seen a lot of him have any thoughts?

I think his VFL form has been solid, he has definitely gone under the radar, especially considering his family connection. Probably the lowest profile player on the list. I think he has a little bit of time, some spots will come up in the back 6 soon. Needs to be patient, not get injuries and have a couple of blinders and I reckon we'll see him.

Well unlike others around here I didn't think much of Hunt's pre season efforts, definitely didn't cement a place in the side. I see a lot of endeavour from Bews.

Don't know too much about Bews, but I like the cut of his jib.

For those that saw the game, was there any reason Bews played the VFL in the forward line last week? Or did he kick two goals from backpocket? Was he forward first half / back in the second?

Nothing wrong with versatility, and it was only a VFL practice match, but it seemed odd if we're grooming the kid as a defender. Could he in fact be a defacto, and yes I'm about to say it - Max Rooke type  - and play forward-defense-lock-down-mungrel?

I think Taylor Hunt has earned first crack at a back pocket spot. He played well early in the season last year and struggled after his injury. I don't think dropping him for Bews, who has only performed moderately at the lower level is justified.

I don't mean for Round 1, but Hunt isn't a lock for that position yet.

They're a different type of player, aren't they? And not just because of their build.
What would I know, anyway? I really loved the look of Cam Eardley who, unfortunately, is no longer with us :(

Probably the best summary. The injury part is the key I reckon. From what I have seen he is good enough to get an opportunity but he is just a few back in depth. And every time he gets close to pushing his claim further he gets a niggle - not really unlike Cowan since his Achilles.

Think he has time too. I though he as good till end of 2015.

Inopportune injuries may have been the key, occurring just when he was on the cusp of selection, and just when a spot was opening up - something which can ultimately be a killer, just ask Gillies, and something which seems to have happened to a whole slew of our youngsters recently - Kersten, Stringer, Sheringham, Schroder, McCarthy, Cowan, Burbury, etc.
He was named as emergency once or twice last year, so he's definitely in the frame at some stage, and they gave him a booster on the website today.

I like what I seen last year of him in the VFL. I really think he has what it takes to be an AFL player if he can get a good run without injury. Good to see his showing some good preseason form this year. Hopefully he'll debut in the AFL this year. Good luck to him.

Liked what I saw of him in the vfl last season, managed to catch a few live games. Good size, good competitor and I always had a soft spot for his old man, so wish him well. Will be happy to see steady improvement from him this year, with no more injuries:thumbsu:

34 games of VFL so far , add another 16 and he is just about primed to play 2-4 AFL . Bews would a good addition to youthful side (to be)

Reading that article it reminded me that Hunt was on 199 with the club , we seem to have a knack for leaving players on around that mark
or not making GF 's when it counts to 200!

Big fan, like a lot of his attributes, and huge fan of his dad's.
Will make it. A skilled player with huge athletic upside.

I was pretty disappointed in his form late last year as well but he made a good start to his career. Lets compare him to Guthrie, for example, a player who has played a very similar role to Hunt over his career. Taylor Hunt averages more disposals, more tackles, more goals and the same marks. I would say they both have a track record of shutting down opposition players on their good days and have let players get away from them on their bad days.

Now I think Guthrie will overtake those numbers at some stage but Guthrie is talked about as the best young player on our list and Taylor Hunt is often talked about as being surplus. I think there is a role for Taylor Hunt, they just need to settle him in the back half. Probably should swap roles with Guthrie because Guthrie is a smarter player and can probably do a number of jobs, I think Taylor Hunt would be better settled in the back pocket.

Guthrie also has a ridiculously high disposal efficiency, and didn't have a goal kicked on him all finals series, while kicking a goal himself. I think you're also looking at career stats, but when you compare 2013 Guthrie actually averaged significantly more marks and kicks.
I'm definitely not of the opinion that Taylor Hunt is surplus, but I also don't think he's got a stranglehold on a spot in the side yet.

He does have going for him that mythical quality now - versatility. He really can play in midfield or defence and be good in both positions. With just over 50 games under his belt now he's got a seasoned body, which alone probably sees him get plenty of games.

Nothing against Bews, but until he starts absolutely battering the door down I can't see Hunt being dropped for him.

No doubt Taylor Hunt played woeful football in last half of season, one of the worst decisions they made was bringing him in for that Brisbane game after missing 6 weeks. It was bizarre because they brought Christensen back through the twos after missing 2. He was terrible that day and he lost confidence after that. I just hope he recaptures his best form this year because we need another back pocket if Guthrie is going to be used elsewhere.

I really like Taylor Hunt, but I haven't seen anything from him during the preseason that makes him undroppable at this point. If it gets to Round 5 and Bews is consistently playing well at VFL level, and Taylor Hunt isn't doing anything special at AFL level, then I see no problem in dropping him for a few games. We dropped Caddy last year and he came back better, so I don't think there's any shame in having a spell in the VFL for young players.

Last year Harvey got 30+ disposals against us in the first half.
Last Friday, with Hunt tagging him, he got 7 disposals in the first half.
When Hunt went off him in the second half, Harvey once again was amongst their best.
Hunt was close to our best defender in the second half.

I really want Bews to make it but spots on the list are going to be tough and unfortunately if he doesn't get a good season under his belt he may find his way out of the club. I hope injury is kind to him and he can get a run at it but he is in a group of players who are in the delist mix.
