Re: Lets hump Ben Graham

He will probably be down here for sure now. I reckon even at 35 he may be able to find a spot in another team even as a reserve.

wow - i was only just talking about him yesterday.
Wasnt he a co captain of the jets?
Last year he was a special team captain

Don't believe he was this year. This has been on the cards since last season. TBH it's probably Ben's attitude that bought him more time. He was well regarded.

I don't.

If he came back he'd be a monty I reckon to get an asistant coaching role of that's the way he wants to go. Other than that I can't see him with a role in AFL.

Wouldn't surprise me if he hung around in New York waiting for an opportunity to open up.

I hope it was worth it (probably was financially). Still, how could anyone leave AFL to pursue that joke of a 'sport'

that's the cruelty of the NFL in America. Regardless of contracts if you don't perform you get dropped. That is partially why they get such good money for playing as their contracts are performance based purely. Part of Bennys problem was that some rookey was punting better than him. I hope he made some good money though and has set himself up for life.

Re: Lets hump Ben Graham

He's even the first player in the picture banner on that website!

Poor Benny, why cut him in the middle of the season when he is apparently coming off a pretty good year previously.

Wrong. Contracts are non-guaranteed in the NFL. Some may have performance bonuses but to say they are performance based in incorrect. For a contract to be performance based it would mean it would become null and avoid automatically if certain contractual obligations were not met.
In Bens case the team made a choice to cut him based on his poor performances this season. This is a common occurrence in the NFL and done for a multitude of reasons with salary cap and roster limits being the biggest.
If they didn't cut Ben, they most likely would not have been able to sign anyone else to do the job, and after having brought in 3 others for a practice session, they obviously found at least one who can do a better job.

PS: I speak from experience, having lived my first 34 years in New York (though I am a diehard Giants fan and despise the Jets) and have avidly followed NFL for as long as I've been old enough to.

Yeah. I heard on SEN today that Ben's contract states that, as a player with less than five years experience, he can be sacked at any time and that his player payments will cease immediately from the date of dismissal.

Because Ben's in his fourth year, the Jets aren't obligated to give him any more money at all, even if he had more years to serve on his contract.

Bit different to the AFL, eh?

EDIT: A whole lotta unlove for poor Benny on http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=35944. Folk reckon he's an experiment that destroyed the team, and one bloke seems to think Ben's 'Euro-trash', though our very own Ninty still loves the big fella!

Poor Benny. I was wondering the other week on how he was going, I've missed him ever since he left Geelong... He has time to come back over for the Grand Final now, though. I'd love it if we could put him in the team. :p

What is the oldest players over there that are playing professionally? He's getting pretty old and would've retired by now if he was at Geelong still.

Yeah I was reading that forum earlier today and they sound like a pack of absolute w***ers. They go on about how 'just a punter' shouldn't be so hard to get right and why bother with these 'experiment guys' when all you need is an average player, then try to say that Ben has cost them so dearly this year and last. If punters aren't important, then how can Ben have destroyed their team? Silly.

Plus, from what I gathered towards the end of the thread the Jets made him alter his kicking style after a pretty good first season, and he only went downhill from there.

There's so much I don't know about N.F.L football, but that kinda thing just sticks out. They made him change his punting style. He became shitter. Can two and two make four?

I've been caught! :p

Yeah, a bit too much unlove there I see, I really have no idea about NFL yet though... So what would I know. Good points made about changing his style and saying punters aren't important anyway??

Well I am no longer on that bandwagon.

Might buy one of the Maddens that has Benny in it though, just as a momento.

He's in Madden '09. Incidentally, Madden is the best sports game on the stands, year in year out. I owe my understanding of American football to playing this game relentlessly.

Ditto, I purchased 2 in succession, the second of which I assumed Ben would be in... but he wasn't. Still played it for hours and hours. And hours.

But NBA 2k > Madden.

Was that Madden 06 you purchased thinking he'd be in it? With McNabb on the cover? I did the same thing. Was pretty shattered to get some bum who got cut before it was even released on it.

The last NFL game I played was decades ago - a pretty cool one on the Commodore 64 called 4th and Inches. Unstoppable screen passes to the wide reciever (Reilly Quick was his name) and then a piss-bolt down along the boundary line to the end zone.

The computer team always had no f*cking idea!:D
