I know it's not official, and a rumour and trade period is still a few weeks away, but...

There has been talk that Jimmy Bartel had a meeting with Eddie And Mick Malthouse sometime in the last couple of days about a possible move to Collingwood, because he wants more money than Geelong are prepared to give him.

I heard on the radio this morning that a possible trade looks more than likely between the clubs which sees Jimmy Bartel go to Collingwood and Chris Tarrant head to Geelong.

Again, I know it's only a rumour, but it's just what has been said.

Hopefully Jimmy stays, but if not, hopefully we get more than another dud forward for him...

Have we got another Leigh Colbert on our hands??

Personally, I'd want more than Tarrant. He just isn't the type of forward we're looking for. We have Dog, Chappy, Ablett & Kingsley, we don't need any small forwards!

As much as it pains me to say it, i am re-signed to losing this guy! :( But i think pick 5 would be a more realistic trade

It's meant to be a really weak draft..which means pick 5 probably wouldnt be as good a player as Bartel anyways...i think if he has his heart set on goin to Collingwood, then we have to take Tarrant off them and hopefully a later pick...otherwise we risk losing him to the PSD for nothing!

But what is the point if we don't NEED tarrant? Like i said, with dog, chappy, abletts, kingsley, mackie, etc. I think we'd be much better of trying to bring in a younger kid with a bit of dash, a player much like Aaron Davey, rather than bringing in an over-rated hack who really wouldn't fit into our structure!

We should try to play hard ball like Richmond did last year with Ottens..demand 2 top 10 picks or we trade him to whichever club gives us the best offer

Totally agree, but tarrant? I don't think so...

The day Geelong gives up Bartel and gets Tarrent is the day the GFC will die....

No more to be said. It aint gonna happen. And if it does, well I will do something drastic. I cant think of anything funny to say now

Gotta love this time of the year, everybody has a 'source'.

You just have to be careful. It has been well-documented that Geelong's problems are up forward. Chris Tarrant is out of form and flavour at Collingwoood, and plays CHF. Sometimes people just put two and two together and it all seems logical.

For the record, i wouldn't take Tarrant for Bartel. They would have to throw a bloody good sweetner in.

Pick 21 perhaps?

if worst came to worst and there was no way jimmy would stay surely you wouldnt be too disappointed with tarrant?
although i admit id want more id be pleased.

I think you mean the rumour started in this thread
Absolute tripe.
Read it and make up your own mind.

I'd wouldn't be too disappointed if that were to happen, but I'd hope like hell that Tarrant adopts a new attitude and focuses on his footy if he were to come to Geelong. I'd like another pick from Collingwood as well.

Seriously, if Jimmy says hes going or else, GFC must think big picture. If they cave and pay him more than he is worth to stay then it will roll on and on. In a parallel subject, while I was reasonably happy with the Ottens deal , I would not want our SOP being trading our young guys one by one in trade deals chasing the Holy Grail player
My basic principle is, pick good kids in the draft and develop them. The quality on our list we have now is a result of this rather than other clubs rejects/high priced recruits.
If we draft correctly we should not have to get into trading. The Ottens deal was done because we had stuffed up getting a quality tall.
If we draft correctly we should rarely be pressured to pay over the odds because we should several players to cover all roles in the side.
So back to Jimmy.
If Jimmy nominated , right now, for the National draft, I have no doubt he would go inside the Top5.Depending on clubs preferance he may be picked #1.
As Ive said before , He was #8 in the Super draft in 2001, 4 years of grooming and he is ready to go for 150 games plus. Any club picking a player in the draft this year would probably be more than happy with a player like that.
He is worth #1 but we wont get it. Absolute best Pick we would get is P4 from Carlton but more likely somewhere between P5-P10. That will be a loss to us so I feel we would want a short term player to go with it or maybe another pick say P5 plus P35.Basically Id prefer the best picks we could get in preferance to a straight swap for Tarrent

I thought this would be sorted by now. There has been no mentions in any of the newspapers. Any chance the cats will make an official comment soon. The longer this drags on the harder it it for Jimmy to stay you would think.

Let's get some facts straight. Bartel is a good young player, but he's no superstar yet. He's played some great games, but some shockers as well (Round 22 v Richmond, Final v Sydney - unsighted in both games). Interestingly James Kelly got better and better at the end of the year, but apparently Jimmy is superior to him. I disagree.

As for Tarrant, he's close to the most overrated player in the competition. Does not average 2 goals a game, an appalling record for a key forward. We've already got a soft forward in Kingsley, we don't need another one.

Finally, if Bartel does leave - for Collingwood or anyone else, have Scarlett or Mooney break his jaw at training before he leaves.

Bartel's not going anywhere.

He's categorically stated in interviews several times that his intention is to stay with the Cats, and Brian Cook came out after the game last week and basically confirmed that Jimmy and Steve J. will both be signed within a couple of weeks.

Pay S.Johnson whatever he requests. He is in the top 5 players at the club. He is so important to the cattery.

If jimmy wants to go, so be it. But we can't accept Tarrant. We must get Fev!!!!

Three way deal for Fev! I would LOVE Fev at the club. He would kick 70+ goals with ease!

Gee your real keen on Fev aren't you Hoff.
So what do you think we need to give up in order to get him???

Much as I want Bartel at the Pies you have to remember basic footy facts 101.

1. All out of contract non-Pie players are spotted talking with Collingwood officials. This drives the fans crazy, they put pressure on the club and the player gets a new higher contract. Akermanis broke this basic rule of footy by using Sydney as the bogeyman when negotiating his new contract with Brisbane, but Bartel is clearly a traditionalist.

2. The Pies haven't landed a decent player in a trade in a decade (aside from getting Clement of Freo, but thats like taking candy from a baby). If you do trade him to us it therefore follows that either you are Fremantle or he's not a good player.
