The only memory I have of Bartel's shizen game in the 2008 GF was his scrubbed kick from CHB straight into the chest of Sam Mitchell, who went back and kicked the sealing goal. A real premiership captain's goal.
Too bad they knifed him. Bartel actually had 11 more disposals than Mitchell that day. Lingy did a great job on Mitchell. We could have used Ling in R1 too, Mitchell was good.

Winning the club best and fairest in a premiership season is the best individual award a payer can win. What could be better than winning the flag and your coaches voting you as the team's biggest contributor over the year?
It's a big honour, but I think Bartel's BnF record (especially in premiership years - 3 x top 3) is something to be proud of despite him not having won one.

So the number of disposals matters now, hey? You keep changing your tune. No wonder you''re named after DJ Kid Kenobi.

How come Bartel was passed over for the captaincy when Ling retired?

He actually made a pretty big mistake by not taking his full 30 seconds with the shot for goal.

just like 20 other similar incidents all day, but the whistle got pulled for THAT one.

Probably the same umpire who gave the head high to the Cats player who was bumped by the Cats player on the wing last quarter.
What about the umpire who forgot to blow the whistle after Thomas kicked the ball and then gave your team a 70 metre penalty for it??? Were you complaining about that one.

Always seems to be the bloke on the end of it when big things happen at the end of games, never the bloke making it happen. Just sayin...

rubbish, watch the 2nd quarter of the 2011 GF again, when Geelong were right up against it as the Pies threatened to take the game away from us - Bartel and Selwood were colossul.

Talk about classic hawk supporter revisionist history! This bloke need to watch the game again sober.

At half time commentators were highlighting Bartel's plays in the second quarter which got Geelong back into the game.

No, you are dead wrong about this. Footballers treat their club's best and fairest as the most important and treasured individual award.

It always seems to come back to winning the club B&F when Bartel is put down by Hawthorn supporters. Funny about that. I noticed that Michael Tuck never won one at Hawthorn. Joel Smith has, so they can't be all that hard to get. So what you are saying is that Joel Smith is a better player than Michael Tuck. I'd probably disagree with that. I reckon Tuck was a pretty fair footballer and Smith a pretty average one in the grand scheme of things. But you're entitled to your opinion. As a Hawthorn supporter though, I'm surprised you don't rate Tuck.

Excellent observation. It goes further though......

Chris Langford never won one either. I personally wouldn't rate Joel Smith ahead of him, but Hawthorn fans know their players better than us.

Everyone goes at 200% in Grand Finals. Sometimes it's the special effort that just sets the tone and lifts the entire squad to give a little more than the 200% and get over the line. Bartel and others ( Rooke , Ottens , SJ , Chappy, Scarlo, Taylor to mention a few) have delivered these moments at crucial times and we are truly blessed to have these guys throughout this fabulous era of unparalled success - best win % from 150 games ever.
These guys do things that lift the entire squad.

I actually think this is one of the main reasons certain Hawks fans hate us so much. Sewell and Mitchell are awesome but they lack a list like ours above of players who are capable of delivering and lifting the side for that extra effort needed - Buddy and Cyril could but so far have fallen short when really tested.

Thread is titled 'Jimmy Bartel'.

Not 'Lance Franklin', 'let's laugh at the Hawthorn football club' or 'please troll Geelong in here'.

Keep on-topic and cut out the trolling crap.

Bartel may not turn it on week in week out like selwood or other players in the competition, but he almost always stands up in the big games and gets in the right spots at the right times.

The 'other players in the competition' you're talking about probably don't play the same role as Bartel. He hasn't been a genuine midfielder for years.. 4-5? He's always been a player that's performed for the good of the team or coaches wishes. As far as I know he hasn't pushed hard to remain a constant midfielder like many players do, often for personal benefit.

He's a utility player. Is better above his head than any other midfielder of his generation, consistently considered the best overhead mark for his height in the league. A clutch player. Can play anywhere and lifts when games need to be won. Has a huge hand in arguably the best team of the modern era. In years to come when people reflect on what this team has achieved, he will undoubtedly be one of the first faces that springs to mind.

Need I point out the obvious again here? Tall poppy syndrome.

Also the use of the word "Clutch" in our game is painful to listen to. Its bad enough hearing the yanks use that term over and over

Its not an adjective people!
Clutch are an awesome band though! :D

please just close it?

its just what the internet does - i am yet to see a youtube video without two or more total strangers arguing in the comments section about everything and nothing.

bartel is a fine player - but some like him, and some dont. done.

Whatever role he plays he hasn't been that good for a while now. 2000 Koutoufides, 2007 Chad Cornes, 2010 Brendon Goddard, were all star utilities so there's no reason why Bartel can't do the same.

And it's not as if his performances are overlooked by everyone but the coach. If that was the case he would have won a best and fairest by now since he doesn't miss a lot of games. Or he would've gotten more votes from his coach in the AFLCA award.

In all seriousness, why do hawks people see bartel as no good?

Looking back on past Brownlow winners...since 1990. The only ones who went on to achieve more are.

Wanganeen.
Diesel
Hird
Voss
Akermanis
Black
Goodes
Judd
Bartel
Ablett

Thats 10 players out of 23 that have gone onto achieve more. Ie Premiership Medal.

If you include Harvey for 2nd Brownlow and Crawford for premiership 10 years later its just over half.

Of all the brownlow winners since Since the Norm Smith Medal came in, in 1979, only 6 players have won both.

Diesel, Hird, Black, Buckley, Judd, Bartel.

Why do i never hear people slagging off any of the other 5 like they do Bartel?

Based on premierships, only Bartel and Black stand on 3.

Based on Brownlows, hes even with Black again, and also Hird and Buckley.

He has proven himself by achieving more than many of the other Brownlow winners of the past 22 years.

Considering Crawford achieved absoutely zilch from 1999 onwards, and Buckley nothing either...fair to say Bartel ranks far higher than these two and is truly one of the greatest players to play this game.

Swan has achieved nothing either since his Brownlow...how about Cooney? Why nothing about Paul Kelly or Ricciuto?

Why do i see no threads on these Brownlow winners who did SFA afterwards.

it was almost six years ago that he won the brownlow...SIX! time really does fly. he's backed it up though. 3 flags and a norm smith, every time i watch geelong he seems a bit quiet (due to the role he plays these days?) but he'll always be johnny on the spot when they need him.

Absolute superstar.

One of the purest footballers I have ever seen. So clean, and gets it done when needed most time and time again.

How come Bartel was passed over for the captaincy when Ling retired?
I've never said that stats don't matter at all, they're simply not the beginning and the end of the story. However stats are more important for some positions than others. E.g. If you're a key midfielder, getting 13 touches in a GF wouldn't be considered great. I was just pointing out that Bartel had a better GF than Mitchell, despite you saying he was shit and talking Mitchell up.

Also, Bartel is Vice Captain, I think Selwood was the logical choice, he wasn't quite ready when Harley retired but once Ling went the timing was perfect. I also think Bartel possibly wouldn't actually want the captaincy, he's a great leader at the club, but not every personality suits taking the captaincy.
