Alex Pearce pre-season highlights.

In addition to his disposals, I also tried to include contests/spoils/tackles in his one. Particularly impressive was his closing speed to tackle for a big guy.

Enjoy.

Oh man, you are a bloody legend. Thanks so much.

Cheers

Impressive collection of highlights because he's so multi dimensional. Has a presence in the forward line, can run up the ground and hit targets, is super fast, chases and tackles hard, finds the footy and is poised when disposing, picks off opposition kicks with his nous and speed, crumbs really well. His 3 goals in the other practice game against WC were pretty impressive as well.

:D

What happened? Got turned into a tagger that's what.

That collection of highlights is so different to how I think of Banfield now. I had forgotten just how impressive he was in those matches.

I imagine he tired as the season progressed (unsurprisingly), but it is like he had all his flair and attacking traits removed. He looked like just the sort of forward we needed in those highlights.

It really frustrates me that something good like that seems to be totally forgotten and now he is a tagger or nothing.

Really great analysis - particularly of one of our kick-ins (and the one of yours as well) - the diagrams are awesome. If you watch the first 5-10 minutes of the game you can see Shuey and Gaff were definitely not tagged at all. Gaff was actually running all by himself in that time and Shuey was on Mundy but perhaps it was some sort of very clever reverse tag where Mundy pretends he is one being tagged but really he is tagging Shuey :) I haven't checked but I strongly doubt we would have started a tag mid game given we were comfortably controlling the game already.

I think you guys have gone down a similar path to what we did a couple of years ago where you've tried to focus on speed and x-factor at the expense of contested football. Something that we've only really started to get back on top of this season (and we may still have a way to go). But it's now a priority for us as you can see by who we drafted.

Your midfield was already your weakness so maybe the impact won't be as severe but I think we've shown how difficult it is to be competitive if you can't win the ball in the first place. You're on the back foot from the start and tire chasing all day, which results in less pressure and your defence then gets hammered. I'd be tempering expectations for this season if I was a West Coast fan. Speaking from our experience it is so much better when you just accept you need to rebuild and can then enjoy the development journey without worrying too much about wins and losses. Although it may be a very long and painful journey with East Perth being so ordinary and Simpson's complete refusal to play youth the last couple of seasons. Finishing bottom 4 would be blessing in disguise for you guys imo, just like it was for us in 2016.

Banfield played out the season exactlly as he played at Claremont. He was a tagger there as well.

Yeah I know :D It was good banter at the time, and in fairness it was based only on their many issues in 2017 and JLT games in 2018... Redden's significant improvement inside in the regular season was a big reason for how well they did this year. They had a bunch of guys they themselves were calling spuds in 2017 who turned it on in 2018 - Redden, Cripps, Darling etc. Simpson and his assistants did an amazing job - it's so friggin annoying! Still dislike them but credit to them.

I can't believe a bunch of WC supporters have spent hours trawling our board for this rubbish from 6 months ago. Could be used as an example for people feeling down... as bad as you feel, your life surely can't be as lame as that mob? And who is the Freo idiot who bumped this thread?

I don't think Banners was much of a tagger at Claremont. Wasn't he an inside / high half forward? I'm pretty sure I've heard him say multiple times this year that the tagging role is new for him and that Mundy was helping him out with it.

Regardless, It's better to see him gain experience this year through the tagging role since he has that body on body experience and the tank to to do so. I rather would of seen him be played on the ball and learn off the game's best compared to not even seeing the pill in our forward half. In fact, after the bye he played a bunch of games as a half forward and didn't really show anything whether it was fitness, the team or himself it's hard to gauge. He will be developed into and become an inside player, just look back at our second Essendon game this season. That's one example of how good he was when had that opportunity to play inside more freely. The tagging role will be secondary to his game. I do think it was smart to have it assigned to him in his first season. He has the potential to surprise next year.

A season & preseason under his belt. Expect him to shine next year.

Correct. Wasn’t a tagger at Claremont and certainly wasn’t in the JLT.
