O.K....So this is one for the aficionados....The 2 greatest ever full-forwards, so far as goal average is concerned. With both of them legends & freaks in their own right; both cut down in their primes with knee injuries.

John Coleman: 1949-1954....537 goals from 98 games @ 5.48 goals per game:

Coleman broke upon the scene in a blaze of glory, kicking 10 goals on debut & an even 100 in his debut season, spear-heading the Bombers all the way to the flag from 4th that year....The following season, (1950) he booted 120, again leading the Dons to back to back flags....In 1951 he led all goal-kickers with 75, before getting suspended late in the year, with Essendon losing the Grand final without him....In 1952 he again topped the tonne, and in 1953 kicked 97, before doing his knee in rd 6 of 1954, with 42 goals already to his name.

Peter Hudson: 1967-1972, 1977....727 goals from 129 games @ 5.64 goals per game:

Huddo started slowly, kicking a measly 57 goals in his debut year; In 1968 however, he exploded into a goal-kicking machine, kicking 125 goals...Such was his dominance that Kennedy cleared out the entire forward-half, leaving Huddo one out....In 1969, he repeated the dose with 120 goals, before peaking with 146 in 1970 & then leading the Hawks to the Premiership in 1971 with a record-equaling 150 goals.
In rd 1 of season 1972 Huddo did his knee before half-time, with 8 goals already posted....In 1977 he returned from Tassie in a cameo season, kicking 110 goals to prove he was no fluke.

Coleman more spectacular and Hudson more freakish. Hudson would be out of position and the ball would somehow end up in his hands/arms.

Hudson more games and better goal average gives him the nod.

I saw some of Hudson, but no Coleman.

Lockett best of all though.

Lockett, Coventry & Dunstall have them in terms of longevity & goals on the board, yes....But for their sheer impact & goal Average, Coleman & Hudson leave em all for dead.

Lockett: 4.84 average, Dunstall 4.66, Coventry 4.25 <<< Coleman 5.48, Hudson 5.64

Over 5 full seasons, Coleman averaged 107 goals per year (18/19 game seasons)....Over 6 full seasons Hudson averaged 121 goals per year. (20/22 game seasons)

Over 13 full seasons, Lockett averaged 104 goals per year (22 game seasons)..Over 12.5 full seasons Dunstall averaged 100 goals per year (22 game seasons)

It's not even close.

Thanks for your efforts. Lockett

I voted Coleman....Simply for his freakish aerial ability & scale of immediate impact.

10 goals in his first game....100 in his first season. And a Premiership to cap it off....Has there ever been another debut season like it?

I voted Hudson.

More games with higher goals average.

Naturally, please yourself.

Coleman only 25 years of age before his sudden retirement.

The final season of his career, he had already kicked bags of 14 & 10 goals.
He kicked 9 goals against Geelong, the team that finished top of the ladder.
Already booted 5 goals in 2½ quarters against a team that would finish third.

It's fair to say he was well and truly at the peak of his powers in 1954 and one can only imagine what might have been had he not sustained the knee injury.

Coleman.

From 1941 until Hudson in 68 he was the only man to kick 100 in 49,50 & 52.

Either he was a class above and it was tough to kick goals, or we had a 25 year period of no gun full forwards.

I think it was the former and why he caught the imagination like he did. To be done after 98 games, tragedy.

Considering no one on here would have seen Coleman play and majority wouldnt have seen Hudson, how can they judge?

Most of us saw Dunstall & Lockett....Compare their averages & go from there....I gave a succinct summary of their achievements in the O/P, which pretty much speaks for itself....I saw Huddo in 77 & there's plenty of archive footage there to go off....Coleman, not so much, though you need to keep in mind that Coleman played in an 18 round competition, so it took a 5.6 goal average alone, to crack the tonne in his day.

Had an older Essendon neighbor & another work colleague who saw him, & both raved about his exploits & deeds endlessly....We're talking about a bloke who could stand on other players shoulders off 2 steps....Often-times jumping over them.

Honestly, no one here can make a credible call. No one posting here would have seen Coleman play, and have been old enough then to understand footy.

75 would be the youngest credible age for a first-hand opinion on Coleman....Chief, do we have any posters on big footy who fit that bill?

I saw Hudson's career and he was the best full forward I saw but I can't compare him to Coleman as I never saw the latter play.
Proves my point exactly

What were the average goals per game when Coventry was getting around in the 20s and 30s??

I have a long gone relative who was notorious for reaching with her umbrella and whacking opposition players and umpires.

Everyone knew to enter and leave on the other side of yhe track.

Collingwood supporter of course :)

At any stage did anyone getting whacked think to snatch the umbrella from her and javelin it 20m back into the crowd, or snap it over their knee and hand it back to her?
