If were going on a lament for dead guitarists, then the magnificent Stevie Ray Vaugan must not be forgotten. Duane Allman has sort of been forgotten too.

BSA : what are you on about? His music was pretty good and he was a big influence on a lot of others. Who cares about his personality? His music is pretty talented, so who cares?
Johnson : All these other people are great too, but it is in rememberance of the 20th anniversary of Lennon's death. They all get their recognition on aniversaries too.

Toucan,Lennon sung most of the songs because he had a superb rocknroll voice (something very overlooked imho) also many of the earlier songs were sung by Lennon when he was the 'leader' of the band.
As for the talent, i stick by my thoughts, Paul and George Martin did more with the arragnements than Lennon ever did. Thats been aknowledged in interviews. The break up
came about because of Lennons jealousy of Pauls increasing takeover of the band, thats also been aknowledged. So why did Paul have more and more influence, to me it was because
he was becoming more and more the creative force within the band.
Your entitled to your opinion, but im entitled to mine, and McCartney was the real musical force behind the band. However neither John or Paul were as strong without the other. Both of their works after the break up showed that.

Actually while we're on the subject of Music related tragedies, I want to mention one man who has barely been heard of by most, but had an incredible talent, and that is Jan Berry. Basic story, he was the creative force behind 60s duo Jan & Dean, they were known as the clown princes of rock n roll. ANYWAY, in 1966, Jan crashed his corvette into a truck at very high speed, and emerged from a coma some time later with severe brain damage. Had to learn to talk and everything all over again. Made an amazing enough recovery to spend many years working on a solo album, released in 1997. One of the true survivors of pop music, a talent very much undiminished by fate.
The music of Jan & Dean is very light-weight in terms of lyrical content, but those arrangements are incredible!!!!!!!!!

Lennon didnt sing most the songs cos he had a better rock n roll voice and there was never a leader of the band! In over 600 songs that the Beatles made Lennon wrote in total 7 more tracks than McCartney now if you listen to a song and Paul is singing it then he wrote it and if John is singing it then John wrote it .. and thats a fact. Wherever you got your stupid comments on them breaking up cos of McCartney taking over the band are laughable, neither of them were the musical force ... TOGETHER they were the musical force!!! Sorry Grendel but wherever you got your info is wrong

about the best lead guitarist it's people like clapton, knofler, emmanuel, satriani, BB King, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Santana, Hendrix, Hank Snow, Vaughan, Raitt, Cray, Hiatt, Morse and Frampton who make up the 'best' leads if you haven't heard of at least 80% of these people you shouldn't even bother commenting most of these people also do mainly solo work, but look at people like clapton back in the day of derik and the dominos, who can say that they didn't kick ass? guitar is what i like in music maybe i don't know who the best ARE but in my opinion the people above are the best guitarist ever. Some of the people you guys said were from a differant style of music.. like Zepplin compaired to clapton? it's not possible to compaire them since the music style is so differant. I am also very pissed off about some of the things people said about Lennon.. The guy is a legand cmon!!
i was also a bit pissed off no one mentioned tracy chapman.. she is one of the best blues guitarist/singers i have ever heard anyway this is what i think..

A lot of his work is old classical pieces played on the electric guitar at frenetic pace. Anyone with napster I also recommend you get Manowar - My Spirit Lives on! That will show you what guitar is about!

Why? In my opinion Billy Corgan is a great guitarist, and I've people have listened to all of the Smashing Pumpkins material, they would know why.
Whether you 'like' his songs or not, you still have to admit that he is a brilliant guitarist. True, he had his influences, and most you can pick - but EVERY musician has had their influences from somewhere.
Gilmour, Clapton, Hendrix, Richards, Harrison, etc. etc. etc. - they all had their influences too. However, just because someone has influences that you can generally pick does not mean that they are any less of a musician.
You could liken a lot of B.Corgan's stuff to that of Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Joy Division - but hey! You know what, he COMBINED all those elements to create his own sound. Sure, it took those elements and influences to make it happen, but he sure added his own ideas to things.
From where I am coming from, I've been playing guitar for eight years, and according to my personal tastes in music, I find Billy Corgan's (and James Iha's for that matter), guitar work amazing. I could continue with all the technical details etc., but what it comes down to (ie: whether you 'like' it or not), is personal preference.
However, to argue that he is not a good guitarist, is pretty much an argument jaded with one's favouritism/sentimentality for another guitarist. Clearly, Corgan is one of the great 'well known' guitarists of the 90's. Similarly, to argue that one guitarist is better than another really is an arugment that is motivated by perception and preference.
Most of the guitarists mentioned here, I believe, are generally quite good. I don't 'like' all of their material, but certainly you could put a case to say "hey, they are alright on guitar". For instance, 'The Edge' of U2 - I am not exactly a U2 fan (just an interested listener), and I don't think that 'The Edge' is as much of an influential guitarist as what some people like to make out, however, I do admit that he is a good guitarist, and someone who played a significant role in music at a certain time.
You could, at the very least, say the same about Billy Corgan.
I am not a subscriber to the theory that every great band must be found in retrospect (ie: from the 60's/70's). There are tonnes of great bands around, most you never even hear of (hell, I couldn't even begin with all the bands I like that most people on here wouldn't have heard of - too many).
I'm sure there are many more brilliant guitarists who only ever play to the walls of their bedrooms, than those who ever played in bands.

Part of their unique appeal was the fact that there was not a single individual that could be called the leader of the band. Prior to the early 1960's it was always one individual who was singled out for stardom, usually it was the guy who wrote the songs, or had the best singing voice. Thats why early rock bands were called "Bill Hailey and the Comets" or Elvis was simply known as Elvis when in fact he had a backing band that were integral to his performances.
The Beatles (and a couple of others) changed all that - they were a GROUP of musos where no one personality dominated. They were promoted as such as well, Brian Epstein insisted they all dressed alike and no one single band memebr was permitted to be photographed alone (for PR purposes that is)
Each band member fulfilled a role that made up the mystique of the "Fab Four" :
John : the Rebel and the darling of the media who could always be relied on to make fantastic newspaper copy, a great voice and a natural stirrer, a great example of the right guy in the right place at the right time.
Paul : The musician and the artist, a nice boy in a way Lennon could never be, the natural tension between him and John drove his songwriting abilities to new heights.
George : the intellectual aethestically minded one, his abilities as a lead guitarist and his interest in pursuing different musical horizons were crucial in making the Beatles so much more than than just another pop band.
Ringo - a knockabout joker whose personal charm and freindliness was instrumental in holding the band together in the later years. Also the rock on which the band was built, If you don't have a good drummer then you don't have a band.

Jod ive got every album the Beatles realeased. Ive got the remastered sets,original pressings,they were the geniuses of their time. Lets not get into a slanging match because i rate McCartney the more gifted muscian. Its just an opinion

Olmy - i think you are letting your favourites become bests as so many people do. I like the Smashing Pumpkins and have two of there albums but Corgan is just another guitarist, nothing more. Hate to dissapoint but he couldnt hole a candle or even a matchstick to musicians like Harrison, Clapton, Hendrix and Knoffler.

OH yeah, just wanted to say that too - my opinion is based on the fact that I own every Beatles album, and every Beach Boys album, and all the BB solo albums, just wanted to let everyone know that.
Not sure why!!!!!!
While I am here though, I should mention to all the Beatle people that I am selling off much of my collection (it is seriously taking up a lot of room!!!!!!! lol) A lot of it is gone, but I do have a few items of interest. Including a John Lennon book, worth a little bit.
Interested parties - catch it before it goes on some net auction site!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
