Melbourne ruckman Darren Jolly was suspended for two matches at the AFL tribunal tonight after being found guilty of striking Sydney Swan Brett Kirk in a practice match at Whitten Oval last Saturday.

The tribunal found that there was "quite solid" contact and reporting umpire Bryan Sheehan said there was "no doubt" it was a striking motion.

"My 100 per cent commitment was to put a shepherd on. I certainly didn't try and get him high," Jolly said.

Kirk said he felt contact to the back of the neck. "I felt a bit stunned but I was able to play out the rest of the quarter," Kirk said.

and the opinion of Scoop Junior from Demonland:

I can't believe how soft the tribunal is. Surely then Schwass will get 4.

A punch in the head behind the play which left the bloke dazed must be worthy of 4 if a "high shephard" is worth 2.

Oh I forgot, he does play for Sydney.

If Schwass does get two I would tell every Melbourne player that if they were going to shephard someone too high they might as well smack them in the head.

We are in trouble with only one ruckman.

I definately agree with that last line... big big trouble.

Powell's case is yet to be decided.

Anyways this is a good time for Jamar to proove himself... unless he is on our Rookie list in which case... OH OH NICHO! :o
Yep Jamar is diffinately on the Rookie List. Of course he could be elevated for Rigoni if needed.

news just in

DEES RECRUIT RUCKMAN FOR 2 WEEKS!

The melbourne football club have recruited a new ruckman for 2 weeks in the absence of Darren Jolly. the new recruit who's name is still under wraps will be introduced to the endearing melbourne crowd at this sundays family day. Apparently the ruckman is oh large structure, but has a good leap and fast on foot. the ruckman will remain on the rookie list after the 2 weeks.

WOOHOO!!!!

With the bad also comes the good:

Melbourne's Stephen Powell is free to make his comeback in round one after being cleared of a striking charge at the AFL tribunal tonight.

Powell, who was playing his first match since the 2000 grand final in a practice match against Sydney at Whitten Oval last Saturday, was cleared of striking Wayne Schwass during the third quarter.

Even though he is no guarentee for round one anyway, this is still good news!

Any word on Schwass? I assume he's got away with it.

GO POWELLY!!! His form on Saturday was very good it's great to have him back, I thought he was a goner!

And WOW Schwass goes!!

Surprisingly enough, the AFL has suspended a Sydney player!!  :D

Sydney Swans midfielder Wayne Schwass will miss the first two rounds of the home-and-away season after being found guilty of striking Melbourne's Nathan Brown in a practice match at Whitten Oval last Saturday.

Schwass had pleaded not guilty to the charge at the AFL tribunal. AFL investigations officer Rick Lewis was yesterday appointed to look into the incident which occurred during the third quarter of the match.

JUSTICE!!!

I didn't actually see Schwass hit Brown but I did see the effect the clash had on Brown, he was clearly dazed & had to stagger from the field.

I noticed he wasn't reported at the time & am glad it was investigated.

I cannot wait to see Powell back and playing!!

With the back-up ruckman stuff, I say we swap Jamar for Rigoni, seeing as it seems he will not play for a long time, if ever again.

Or, we can use Schwarta in the ruck. He is pretty damn good at it. White can rest in the square, Neita out to CHF.

Same. I didnt realise how much we missed him until last Sunday.

His centre square clearances on Sunday is what helped us get back into it. Without him we struggled. Throw in Whitey, Yze, Leoncelli and maybe Woewodin and the centre square set up looks OK.

Im pretty sure Jamar will be lifted from the rookie list this week.

I saw all 3 incidents on Sports tonight, here are my thoughts

Jolly: Very unlucky, he caught Kirk with an elbow but he was trying to shepherd, his height counted against him here with Kirk's head in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately accidents count so we can't complain here maybe 1 week would've been a just result (Only seems to happen when players plead guilty these days).

Schwass: Gutless hit on a bloke who wouldn't have been expecting it (Brown).

Powell: Really wanted to kill Schwass but fortunately his first punch missed, it became a wrestle in which Powell was obviously winning, umpire gave the swans a free to aviod Powell strangling the life out of Schwass! Good to see him stick up for Browny, who said of the incident that he was winded by Schwass. Brown was out on his feet in fact and had to stagger off. He returned a quarter later.

Yeah Schwass was defenetly in the wrong and it was good of Powelly to stick up for Brown but not at the cost of a game. I'm so glad he got off but if they tribunral were having a bad night he could have easily got out which would have been a really shame.

Schwass only got two.

He deserved four. There is no justice in the AFL.

He hardly deserved four. If Browny wouldn't have recovered quickly, than yes 3 or 4 weeks would have been appropriate but 2 weeks was just fine seeing as though the knock wasn't hard enough to actually injure Doggie.

Jolly got 2 matches for something he didn't even mean.

Schwass meant his and only got 2. See what I am saying??

Well I don't think Jolly deserved to get suspended at all and that Schwass deserved two, but yeah on the logic of Jolly getting 2 Schwass should have recieved 4 I agree.
