Josh Fraser is far and away our most important player in 2007. We have no back ups to him of any substance, and we have shown we can win without Rocca, Bucks n Jimmy. I just think if Fraser went down we would done right up the backside... thoughts???

I agree, he played a ripper game this week, if he goes down were cooked..

The man is a star, I don't care what any one else says, any man that can ruck 90% of every week, and still push forward to provide an option desrves full praise, well done Josh!

Yes...but if I asked you at the start of the year how we'd go if our best 3 defenders (O'Brien being the 3rd) went down, you probably wouldn't have been too optimistic either. Fraser's been very good, but we have a very even side. If Fraser went down, I'd imagine Cox + (Reid?) would be able to do a passable job, given Fraser usually gets owned in the ruck anyways.

Fraser usually gets owned in the ruck? This is an AFL forum, you are obviously referrring to a Fraser who plays Rugby Union and gets hammered in the 'rucks'.

hit outs are the most over rated stat going, i would perfer a bloke who has ability around the ground than a robot who wins hit outs. example yesterday demons won hitouts 44 to 20 something yet carlton won the clearences by a big margin

Josh was very good against the Saints. He beat trash though. Blake was terrible. The weather wasn’t conducive to ruckmen and Josh’s class showed out. That doesn’t make him a good ruckman though. There are stats and there are stats. There are hitouts and there are hitouts. Quality ruckmen win quality hitouts regularly. The obsession with athletes has seen the number of quality ruckmen dwindle. There are apparently a few in this years draft from what was said about the u18 carnival.

Totally agree that fraser is pour most important player.
He has been carrying the weight for far too long.
Not many palyers can do what he does.Imagine a big body ruck option helping Josh out, josh would have a field day just pinch hitting in the ruck and basically playing all over the ground similar to goodes.
Talking about Goodes heard an interview with him on the weekend and asked where he wanted to play before he was drafted ,it was Collingwood.
Goodes was a collingwood supporter in his younger days.

Matthew Kruezer will go top two. He covers plenty of ground and dominates at the centre bounce.

I would snap up Michael Griffiths. He is huge (206cm), having a great year in the WAFL, from all accounts, but he's 24 years old. Has been dominating the hitouts and kicked 6 goals this week.

My personal favourite, Scott Meyer, is a chance too.

I liked the way Josh rucked all game on Saturday but can not do it for the whole year. If Bryan & Richards can't do the job well enough then I would like to see Rocca have a run while Josh rests forward. Rocca is very underated in the ruck & is useful around the ground. The only problem I see is he doesnt have the engine to do it for long enough.

well they should only count the hit outs that go to one of the ruckmens team mates or to the advantage of his team that way we will have a true indication of a hit out, other wise we are only guessing, then it becomes a useless stat and a waste of paper and ink.

there must be something wrong with michael griffiths or he would have been picked up already or at least been rookie listed must be super slow or something

It's the latter, as far as I'm aware. Ruckmen tend to "come of age" at 24 or 25.

He may not be as good as Dean Cox, but his stats are very impressive.

They have hitout to advantage stats. I have no idea what they count in them though. For the real value of a ruckman see the 2002 GF time in periods, the whole 2003 GF or the 2005 SF when Ball & Davis won it for Sydney. Last year when we played WCE at SUbi Judd got all the praise but Cox fed him all night.
