Apologies if this has already been covered but i couldn't find the gold coast rumour/speculation thread.

Was just wondering if anyone had some insight into GC and the prospect of Josh Fraser getting booted up North at years end...

I personally would like Fraser to stay if not purely to keep pressure on Brown and Wood to increase competition for spots, however he carries a hefty price tag ($350000ish) if rumours are to be believed so it may not be in the best interests of the club after all..

My question is this. If he goes, and i think he will, what pick would we get given the following details.

1. Former number 1 draft pick (who arguable never lived up to his potential)
2. The recent signings of Bock and Krakouer and their second and third round priority picks.
3. Mature age experienced ruckmen/forwards are few and far between.
4. Is on the outer and is not integral to club success from an outside view.

My fear is that we will not get anything near what we should given the amount of time spent developing him and that he cost us a number 1 pick but if we did get something decent it would be good to have in hand in 3 or 4 years when we start crashing back down.

If the Gold Coast recruiters have watched any football this year they will rightfully steer well clear of Josh Fraser.

Contracted player in our best 22 vs Fraser....they can have him. They are able to take one contracted player i think so if it's Josh, then so be it. 3rd or 4th rounder at best.

Fair call.... Then who rucks round 1 for GC next year?

No idea. I'd imagine with their million ways of getting players they have a hell of a lot better options for a ruck than Fraser. I'd like to get a 2nd round comp pick if he got poached as well, but that's not in the interest of GC.

Maybe they'll throw some money at Carlton for one of their developing ruckmen... Pyke has done well with Seaby out, so there's that, thought I wouldn't be throwing my eggs into that basket. It will be interesting no doubt.

I don't think Fraser owes us anything he was vital early in his career and is a 200 gamer. Sure he wasn't one of the stars of the comp but he has had a solid career. I personally don't think he'd be interested in playing in the VFL for another year so I don't expect him to be here next year. The clock is ticking on Josh's career and he'd be right to look at the best future for him both in terms of playing seniors and obviously finanicially he is worth more at a team where he is in the best 22. Given his recent form I just really don't think we can be saying we haven't got fair compensation for him in a trade.

I think trade wise he'd probably go for a pick we won't end up using in a Steve King like trade to get him to the club he wants, possibly he could go to the gold coast in which case I think we will get more for him then he would have got on an open trade market.

If he goes to the Suns as our uncontracted player we get a 3rd round pick minimum compensation, as would any uncontracted player the Suns take.

The Suns don't lose any picks for these, rather the AFL just hand out additional picks, pushing picks after that, down the order.

Or in other words, what ST said.

GC would be better served going off Hale I reckon, maybe even Jacobs.

Hale was a Qlder too wasn't he? He'd be the perfect pick up for them. Him and Brennan as a chop out would be a pretty handy ruck combo as a start although maybe they'd want to use Brennan in a different role.

There's the reason why the GC won't be going too hard after a ruckman.

Smith has been playing VFL all year, and if he is fit, he will play round 2 (GC have a bye round 1) next year.

Therefore someone like Josh might be the perfect pickup, he can be the second ruckman, and play part time up forward.

Because that was such a great role for him this year. Unfortunately for Josh I doubt he could ever be referred to as the perfect pickup for any team.
I hope he does play somewhere next year though, I respect his contribution to the club and wouldn't be at all annoyed if he decided to go somewhere else even if we get nothing for him.

that's fair enough. We haven't got any value out of him in the last couple of years so why should we demand anything.

Its also a pity Matthew knights got the sack because he'd be stupid enough to want to bring Frase in.

Fraser is a bit like Charman - his injuries have cost him

Also Gold Coast are allowed to take one UNcontracted player, they have absolutely no power to steal a contracted player.

They can't poach a contracted player, but they could negotiate with us, within the bounds of his contract (or outside should Josh agree to the contravention) to get him, as could any club. This situation gives us too much leverage to be viable IMO and is much better when it is just the unsigned player and their potential club doing the brokering, with us hanging in the wings hoping we can retain or buy our way out of trouble. In this case we won't be buying our way out of trouble. (happy to be corrected here, I'm by no means an expert on player contracts... TRS? :))

FWIW, and it sounds horrible saying it, but they can have him. We'll need the salary cap room in the coming years, so any moves we make will be to ease the burden on our cap.

I think Josh's body has conked out and is probably not far from an early retirement. I wish him well and hope I'm wrong.

Whatever they (any team) wants to part with.

Letting Fraser go elsewhere is more about freeing cap space than anything else.

I personally think Josh would be a great pickup for them.

Wouldn't get paid much money, is over his injuries and has a lot of finals experience.

Let's be honest, at his best, he's a VERY capable ruckman. Up until his knee in that State of Origin match, he was the in form ruckman that year.

Josh was by no means horrible in his last game at senior level. Looked to be moving pretty and played ok, it's just that he was never going to be able to break into the side and fit into the structures on one performance. Given that we won't be asking much I am pretty confident that if he wants to move on there is a side out there who would have him there and there abouts as best 22 depending on what direction they go. Hawthorn, Richmond even St Kilda would all probably at least look at him.

A packet of Twisties

or- probably 3rd - 4th round.

This will be similar to the Geelong Steven King trade. Just to try and get Josh a home.

If he is to be their no 1... then why shouldn't we get a good return and he a good contract.

Good luck to Josh if he does go... he has served the club well.

If this is true then I can tell you that this is a very recent development on the Sun's part because as of a few weeks ago they didn't have any interest in him. Maybe that last game against the Hawks where he rucked and moved okay has come under their notice?

I hope he does go for the sake of his career and at the same time helps us by freeing up space and earning us an extra draft pick.
