In Jude Boltons prime he was a gun player..blue collar but worked hard and delivered. Jobe is also a blue collar worker sort of player. His not silky skilled by any means but has the same worth ethic. Tough call but I would say Jude Bolton if I had to draft and 18 yr old kid.
Something which I think a lot of people forget is that Jude can, and does, also tag. Watson, to the best of my knowledge, rarely if ever performs tagging duties. Bolton has that extra dimension to his game.
They are actually very similar players. Both have been bagged by their own supporters in the past for being plodders with average disposal. Both have shown these supporters up. Obviously Jude has been doing it for longer than Watson, he's been around for longer.
Points also have to go for Bolton's durability. Bolton averages 21.2 games per season. Watson averages 14.4 (though this is somewhat harsh on Watson, given he took longer to establish himself as a regular than Bolton; assuming he's not constantly injured in the next few years, expect Watson's average to rise by the time he hits Jude's age. Also, the Swans have played in more finals than Essendon).
Knowing what I currently know, I'd take Bolton. That said, Watson has time to overtake Jude and really step up into that "elite" bracket, which Bolton never has. Whether he will or not is anybody's guess though.
Jobe's better now; line-ball call on who's best is/was better; but Jude's definitely done it for a lot longer.
If Jobe continues the improvement he's shown in '10 over '09 & '09 over '08; he'll be easily in front. But for now, Bolton, by not very much.
Seriously - Jobe average almost 5 posessions a game more than Bolton. Is better in the clearances - at least his equal in contested possessions and is far more creative.
Boltons best season is 22 possessions a game. Watson has been well above that since his first full season.
That isn't everything. I'd say only this year has he been clearly better with the footy and in 06 he was a fair bit worse.
Surprised how many goals Bolton's kicked over the years.
Watson is comfortably better than him right now and at only just 26 probably has his best still ahead of him over the next 3 years. I think when all is said and done Watson will be regarded as having been the better player overall.
