Congrats KB, worthy recognition for a legend of the club and icon of the game.

I was lucky enough to be able to trot down on the day. It was fantastic. The weather was a little drizzly, so they moved the formalities inside to the Percy Beames Bar in the ‘G.

Plenty of Tiger royalty in attendance. Board members O’Neal, Ryan, Dunne. Maybe others I didn’t recognise. Weightman. Balme. Benny Gale. The whole Bartlett family. KB spoke about how important the recognition was to his family, and I was genuinely touched. Great to see the grandkids there. They looked a bit overwhelmed, but wow, what a memory for them!

Sheedy did the toast / roast, and told some ripping stories. I knew he and KB were both Prahran kids (before KB moved to Lennox St), but I didn’t realise that they played junior footy together. I’ll never do it justice here, but he told the story of Jewell unknowingly making one of the best tactical, positional changes in the club’s history in 1977 – KB to the HFF. Of course, KB wasn’t happy about it. Sheedy went to talk with Jewell to understand the move a bit, and Tony said “Well, I’ve been watching him and looks like his getting old and slow. He just doesn’t seem to be picking up his opponent anymore”. So Sheedy went to KB to pass on the insight, maybe encourage him to be a bit more defensive, if he wanted to stay at rover. And KB said – “Opponent? But I have the ball”.

Bartlett has still played the most games at the MCG. He played his first and last game there. He played his 100th, 200th, 300th and 400th all at the ‘G. His coached there. His called countless games there – more than any other commentator?

Greatest living Tiger, IMO.
