Almost everybody seems to have given up on this year's draft in terms of securing talent. The reality is that GWS will dominate the draft.

That said, there are still relativities to be gained from it. If we take GWS out of the equation, we effectively hold picks 5 and 9 of the draft (relative the other 16 clubs).

In years' time, the 2011 draft "gap" will hurt the non-GWS clubs. The extent to which it will hurt will be greatly lessened if we use 16 and 20 to load up. Who knows, the talent secured could be used to effect trades for homesick WA kids who started their careers in footy wastelands...

Thoughts?

That's the key. GWS have already got Ward, Scully and Palmer as midfielders. So they will draft a few more but more so will make sure that they get a couple of KPP's and ruckman. We could still have some good midfielders slide to our picks and I would not be that fussed if we missed out on Clark but stil had picks 16 and 20 in the first round.

I believe we can secure a solid inside mid and a solid KPP with these picks (Possibly Kersten or Lockyer as the KPP) so I would hope we would keep them and swoop on Clark in the PSD.

Still lots of talent in this years draft up to the mid 20's.

Next years draft will be yet another compromised draft because of all the compo picks that will likely be activated by GWS/Suns etc.

If we keep 16 and 20 I wouldn't mind seeing us use it on Kersten/McInnes/Dobosz or someone of that ilk or a good mid/running defender.

With two picks in the top 20 it may even be worth the risk to chuck one at that Manson kid from up north. He is likely to get homesick out east but is a Buddy Franklin type talent so is well worth the risk.

If we only used 16 in this years draft - no way would you risk it on Manson.

I hope we keep them. Clark is not 'the missing piece of the puzzle' IMO so I hope we keep our picks and what happens with Clark will just happen.

This aint (or shouldn't be...) a case of selling the farm for Croad/Tarrant. We don't have an urgent need for Clark, so we shouldn't do anything stupid to acquire him.

You can't sneeze at 2 picks in the top 20 - regardless of the supposed depth. You still get a shot at 2 of the best 20 kids in the country.:thumbsu:

I think the last times we had pick 20, we got some kids called Fyfe and Ballantyne. That's reason enough for me to back our recruiters in and keep it.

Two top 20 picks when no one else has many (any!), a chance to get Manson at 38 and potentially Clark in the PSD, how good is that? Worth the risk on Clark just for the first part of that equation.

That added to all the injured players we get back from this past season and things are looking up at Freo!

In summary, keep 16 & 20 and draft good!

A no brainer really. Keep 16 and 20 and continue to build. Generally the top 20 are always strong. Kersten would be a great get with one of those picks

Even better is that we get Clark for free in the PSD & keep Picks 16 & 20 !!

That was my line of thinking. With GWS having so many picks, after the first few, they are going to pick for position rather than 'best player' and that may allow some of those higher non GWS picks to pinch a very good player that would otherwise go in say the top 10-15 in a non-compromised draft.

The way I see it, keeping those picks will be quite nice compensation if the Clark thing falls through (who I think would be good for us). That's why I don't see the need for Bond to buckle despite Bris' jumping up and down like my 2 year old.

I hope they keep the picks I'm neither here nor there with Clark, get him if its a decent price but if not let him go to Melb but I don't think he will nominate for this option.

16 best available KPP
20 best available mid
38 one of Kersten/Dobosz/Manson should be available
54 if we use it grab another running player/ midfielder

I say keep them, trade a later pick for a percieved plodder who will turn out to be dynamite under a new coach and team environment

my thoughts are that we need mitch clark... to get him we will need to give up atleast one of pick 16 and 20. fortunately he is young enough to be around for a long time

It would be good to have a list of all uncontracted players to gain an understanding if there is another player / players that will fill other gaps than just focusing all our energy on Mitch, Even a greater understanding of contracted players that what more opportunities would be great, maybe that would be a good new thread

Totally agree on keeping them even if their used to gamble on 2 kpp in draft.
Clark is not a key forward.
He is a backup ruck who can be very handy up forward.
try an get him yes but dont give up any top 20 picks.

If we get him great he will be very handy.
But it will not help us with lack of quality kpp options.
Take the risk in the draft with those picks.

suprised Freo didn't get a GWS pre-listed player with Pick 20 deal.
Still a good deal regardless.

Yeah I like the idea of getting Clark but (without knowing the actual facts) but it seems that Brisbane won't accept anything other than his value based on his potential rather than current ouput (including his Almost All Australian).

So based on that I'm really hoping we pass and just take our picks. Even if we don't get him in the PSD.
