THE future of Swans midfielder Nic Fosdike is at the crossroads with the 28-year-old weighing up whether to continue next season with a long-term knee injury that could significantly restrict him.

This is a very interesting time for this story to come out. This is because it is after the date of our final list lodgement and we have two veterans on our list therefore if he decides to not play we will have above the minimum required players and we will have missed out on the opportunity for an extra pick in the draft or a PSD pick.

If he does decide not to play i think that his timing is very disappointing and that he really isn't a team player. This is the kind of decision you don't decide over night therefore these thoughts would have been around for months, possibly the entire year.

I'm not sure it would make much difference when he pulled up stumps,as the article states;
Complicating Fosdike's decision is the fact the Swans cannot simply pay out his contract for 2009 because it would count in last year's total player payments, pushing them over the salary cap and putting them at risk of fines and other sanctions.
Therefore if he were to have retired prior to the last lodgement, unless he was willing to forego his 2009 contract payments, we would have had to keep him on the list anyway.

And given he still seems to have some hope of playing regularly next year
"It's not a knee that will stop him playing necessarily, but it could have an impact on his ability to train and get up for games," said Swans general manager Andrew Ireland.
I'm not sure we could expect him to just walk away from say $200k pa.

Not sure about how this fits in with the rules for list lodgement, but clause 13c) of the AFL-AFLPA CBA states that during the period from the end of a season to two weeks after the PSD preceeding the following season, an outside veteran can be moved back onto the primary list (but must still be counted as a veteran on the primary list - which has salary cap implications only).

This implies that if Fosdike were to decide to pull the pin on his career in the next fortnight, the Swans could either participate in the PSD, or if that doesn't work, could move one of Leo or Kirky back to the main list and then draft another rookie.

A further option is not drafting/ rookieing any more players, but with just one "outside" veteran, the club could nominate a rookie at the start of next year who is allowed to play senior football without waiting for a long term injury. That might be a useful option if they think someone like Murphy could be a chance to earn a spot in the team early in the season.

I don't think it works like that liz.
My understanding is that after the final list lodgement (which has now occurred) you can't make changes to your senior list with regards to retirements.

The example being Gehrig last year.
He effectively retired midseason, but was kept on the senior list, because he couldn't be replaced due to retirement.
Instead St Kilda placed him on the long term injury list so that a rookie could be elevated.
Brisbane did the same with Voss in 2007.
Having him on the long term injury list, while he was commentating for Channel 10!

So if Fosdike does retire, we'd presumably place him on the long tern injury list, rather than drop him from the list entirely.

You're probably right Scott. Though the Gehrig circumstances were different given that it was in the middle of the season, rather than before the final draft of the year. In any case, the contract / salary cap situation complicates things.

If Fosdike doesn't play then yes it is disappointing that we couldn't draft another player but by saying he isn't a team player is a bit unfair. As you have pointed out, this is not a light decision that would be made overnight so Fosdike can't be expected to rush things and risk making the wrong decision.

this is quite unfortunate timing for the club's perspective

however this is a momentous decision, with no real gain for the club this point forward

so hope he makes the right decision for himself, as regardless of his decision, there will be little to no impact to the club

It would be a real shame if he cannot get fit.

Easily in our best 22

Reckon he would have struggled to be any good. He is a gutbuster with ordinary skills and with a dodgy knee he would struggle

  1. Attend 'Journalism 101' class with guest lecturer Ben 'Pulitzer' Fordham.
  2. Spot Ben Cousins in Sydney (he was in Coogee a few weeks back, buying a freshly squeezed juice).
  3. Read about Fosdike's timely retirement.
  4. Make vague connection between these two seemingly unrelated events.
  5. ?????
  6. Profit.

Im not gonna pretend I know anything about all these drafting rules, but is it still possible we could get Cuz?

I meen legally and within rules, however bent, not if we really will, just if its possible?
I know you already said no, and no again is fine with me, it just shows how much i know about drafting rules...

Final list lodgment was yesterday.....

There is some talk about being able to list him as a mature age rookie...eg: Raminaskus

But I think this would only apply to West Coast

Sorry, 'No' sounded a bit smartasey.
But we can't pick him up, as we don't have a pick in the pre-season draft (and it's too late to delist or retire anyone)and the rookie proposal (which is a Ricky Nixon pie in the sky option) could presumably only apply to West Coast (and it isn't going to happen anyway).

and thats the final word on Ben Cousins in this thread which is about Nic Fosdike's knee.

Why talk about a player when you KNOW we can't get said player. If people want to keep taking threads off topic in such a manner, I might as well ban discussion on Ben Cousins ALL TOGETHER and punish with with infractions.

So please move on and keep threads on topic.
