IMO Richmond need another tall forward in the worst way before they become too Riewoldt conscious. Those types of things cost you flags, I know from experience. :thumbsu:

Great effort on the mock draft, it's great to be able to come here and read about the upcoming draft class. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on a couple of things:

Do you see any of Mayes, Garlett or even a Kennedy falling past pick 10, and who are some of the pacey outside mids that are good kicks? I've obviously mentioned a couple but surely there's more that could surprise. Saints need a couple of these going forward.

An AFL talent scout has indicated Melb will use early picks to secure Martin and Hogan in the mini draft. Can you see this happening ? Think both players will be unavailable to play senior football next year.

I get the feeling Neeld is more interested in winning with "men" and not just developing kids and re-rebuilding. So I expect Melbourne to look for another Mitch Clarke or a similar quality player if available first this trade period.

Melbourne are curious and probably the only team with the draft picks and the willingness to be active this trade period to make it possible to add those two minidraft selections.

My feeling is Josh Kelly will be that other pick to go with Jack Martin though. Kelly has been excellent through the second half of the season and has really put forward a strong case as one of those top minidraft

Thanks for the kind words.

Mayes should be top 10 but Garlett or Kennedy have the potential to slide past 10.

Josh Simpson is one with his pace and ability to kick with either boot. Dean Towers has great pace and can use it well. Jackson Macrae is an excellent kick and has great endurance.
Plenty out quality outside players this draft.

Richmonds KPP stocks are not too bad atm, specially with Chaplin coming on board, We will have Chaplin,Grimes,Rance as the main KPD's with Batchelor & Dea both playing tall and small and Morris to take the betts,Milne's of the world.

Kpf's are Riewoldt,Vickery,McGuane (if he isnt traded or delisted) With Elton(#26) Griffiths (#19) Post(#26) Astbury(#35) all 2nd round draft picks That can play both Foward & Defence .......... There is chatter that post maybe going to brisbane But at the moment there is decent cover there.

I can actually see us going for a player like Liam McBean with either pick #29 or #31 and he Looks to be a KPD/Ruck, This would actually give us fantastic flexability in the future with Vickery taking the ruck in the foward line McBean in Defence and Maric doing the Center and boundry ruckwork - Effectively playing 3 rucks but the 2 being very good in other kp roles.

Our mids are where our issu'e are , whilst we have Martin,Cotchin,Delidio,Foley as the cream and all look very very good & Grigg,Houli,Tuck as the accumulators its the next level down that we have issue's with in the rotations. Both Conca & Ellis look like they will be good and Helbig showing signs.

We need to look to replace Jackson,King,White,Tuck(age) Newman(age) I see our needs as
#9 best mid available -wines/kennedy/Garlett
#29 McBean (if gone another mid)
#31 Med foward/Mid -Membrey would be good
#50 Mid/Foward-Sumner
#68 what ever we missed out on due to best available

In a dream wish list, it would be great if we could trade our #31 & a surplus player to get a pick in the late teens and possibly snare Vlastuin/Stringer one falls.

Good to hear. Thanks for the info.

I think if we get both picks there's no way we won't be taking Hogan IMO.

Neeld wants two KPF's.

I'd probably be leaning towards forwards/mids first though. There is some great top end midfield talent on the Richmond list but that midfield group needs to go just that little bit deeper to be a genuine top 8 side.
Agreed. Missing Vickery this year hurt up forward, and hopefully the younger guys take some steps forward (no pun intended, and I refer to Post, Astbury, Elton - although probably still a little early to expect much from the latter).

The club has intimated it will be going for mids... I'm sure there's a handful they'd be mulling over for pick 9, but Vlastuin seems like the type we'd look at. I wouldn't be surprised if 9, 29 and 31 are all used on the best available mids, unless there's a slider ala Elton last season that is too good to pass over.

Has had multiple ACLs starting in his draft year, as far as I remember, and has hardly gotten on the park. A bloke that size with knee issues - you'd hardly want to rely on him unfortunately. The really big guys tend to lose a bit more when they come back from a knee than the smaller guys do.

Paul Salmon?

The thing with GWS and those minidraft selections is that you just don't know what they are going to trade them for so it's too early to assume.

It's entirely possible that say Collingwood lose Cloke and St Kilda lose Goddard and get compensation picks back. Either or both clubs could trade those along with their 1st round selections to get into the minidraft. Additionally other clubs still have compensation selections left so no reason why GWS don't go after those future draft selections - looking to spread their riches.

It gives GWS more time to spread see what they have in their younger group and go after the types of players they need later to complete their list so future selections would probably appeal more if the value is similar to what a Gold Coast/Melbourne or whoever offer.

What's the timing of the FA this year in comparison to the trade period?

Would be interested to know myself.

Ben Kennedy could be the biggest slider of the draft - some club around pick18 could snatch a bargain

With the recent success of Dion Prestia and Devon Smith as smalls from early picks I'd be pretty surprised to see Kennedy slip with the way he has played these past two seasons.

I agree. The club has already met with Hogan and he fills a need that has troubled us all year. He'll do what we hoped Watts would do. And he'll be 19 by round 1 2014 and ready to hold down CHF for a decade. You have a hope of building a premiership team around Clark and Hogan.

Did some small research (actually, pinched it from demonland.com, thanks W_J!)

http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/31375-afl-draft-trade-period-important-dates-2012/

Looks like the FA period finishes before the trade period however it doesn't say when the AFL will announce what compensation picks are awarded for losing a player. I'm not even sure if these picks can be traded?

Prestia and Smith have been outstanding - I dont think Kennedy has performed as well this year - I am not questioning his ability - just that clubs might shy away and look at a bigger body

Looks like Adelaide might be a chance for him afterall, after saying they couldn't afford the minidraft pick they'd need to get him last year - which they obtained eventually anyway.

I like the sound of Kennedy, would definitely take him if he slid to us, provided the quality Key forwards were all taken already.

What are Kane Mitchelles chances from the WAFL getting drafted?

Matty Rendell was just on 5aa talking about the SA boys and said Toumpas, Grundy, Menzel and Mayes will all go top 10.

Rendell knows his stuff. Straight shooter and has done a great job with Adelaide and it would be a crime not to see him in an AFL senior scouting position next year.

Not new news with any of these. I can see Menzel going just outside of the 10 but the others are almost certain top 10 selections.

Who do you think could be a steal/slider this year Knightmare?

Nathan Hrovat I could see sliding and being a real value pickup. Ready to play round 1 next year and produce.

Tanner Smith might slide into the 2nd round. Shannon Taylor if available late will be a bargain. Harley Montgomery same. Sean Lynch same. Matthew McDonough same.

These are some of the strong performed types with some serious game but others might go first.

What are Kane Mitchelles chances from the WAFL getting drafted?

Little guy but big producer. More a situational rookie selection.

Paul Salmon?

Was never the same, unfortunately. Still was a bloody good player, but before he did his knee he was poised to be one of the greats of all time. Was on course for a hundred-goal season in his 2nd or 3rd year from memory.

Of course, surgery was much less advanced when Salmon did his knee than it is now. But then again, he only did one.

it says right there that free agency signing period closes 11 days after trade week starts.

i dont see how richmond dont have to part with one of those draft picks to get chaplin, why would port let him walk to richmond when we could match any offer? he is restricted after all.

sure menzel would be top 10 on talent but would any team in the bottom 8 want to bet on his body staying sound? ill be very nervous if port take him as we would have so much riding on him.

Awesome work Knightmare, just interested in Toumpas, do you think that Gold Coast will pass on him at 2? I reckon the Dees would snap him up at 3 due to their need to bolster midfield stocks. Will his hip problems factor into anything come draft day?
Also Chris Prowse from Oakleigh, do you rate his chances at perhaps sneaking onto a list this year?

Haven't seen him play so can't comment on his game.

All I know at this stage is that he is a WA ruckman who got invited to the state screenings.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts if you've seen him play. Any insight appreciated.

205cm monster, pretty much come from the clouds.

Rarely gets beaten in the centre square, moves well around the ground, is very good below his knees for a bloke his size, has shown that he is capable of going forward and kicking some goals.

Probably needs a bit more grunt in his game, but a very likely sort.

This is my concern also. As talented as he is having had LARS I wouldn't be investing a top 10 selection on Menzel. After pick 10 I'd certainly be starting to think about him if still available.

But it only takes on team to rate him that much higher for him to go top 10 so it's still entirely possible.

Gold Coast might trade into the minidraft with pick 2. If they retain pick 2 then likely Toumpas will be their selection. The outside chance at pick 2 might be O'Rourke but I'd favour Toumpas with his ability to change games. I don't see his hip being an issue. If anything I was pretty encouraged with his ability to play through injury and still really influence games for periods throughout the u18 championships before his surgery. Clubs will do their medicals but I wouldn't think long term it would impact him at all. His form is exposed so I don't see any real issues for Jimmy at this stage.

Either could be really nice fits for Melbourne and worthy early draft investments.

Prowse is an interesting one to bring up. A number of scouts were very keen on him early season and with limited ruck depth he could still be in the mix for selection.
