It seems that there are different opinions on what we expect/hope for from the Cats in 2011. Just wanted to gauge what the thoughts were on here with regards to what you'd consider a successful season.

Can be as many KPIs as you like, including things like wins, ladder position, week of the finals that we make it to, number of debuts, number of games played by Menzel/Hunt/Duncan/Simpson/Motlop/Brown/Smedts etc., Pods/Hawkins total goals and so on.

How many of these KPIs do the Cats need to tick off for you to consider 2011 a success? How many are non-negotiables?

Got a piece of string mate?

For mine they all inter twine.

1/ Play no kids - nothing less than a flag
2/ Put a combined 60 - 80 home and away games into the likes of Menzel, Duncan, Hunt, Motlop, Brown, Schmedts Gillies, etc. If that happens I am ok with one win in the finals and then exiting.
3/ KPI for Hawkins. Must kick more than 4 goals on at least 6 occasions. Must Kick 50+ for the year. Must take a one grab mark at some stage, even if it is at training.
4/ I want to see our forward 50 tackle count increase by 30%
5/ VFL team must lift and start beating sides above it. I want to see older senior players actually playing in the VFL to assist growth rather than 'resting'

Good point. I actually didn't consider the VFL when I wrote the OP. With the senior players we have at our disposal, I want a minimum of a sixth place finish in the VFL. We've had an ordinary team in the VFL for a couple of years now and were lucky it didn't hurt us in 2009.

I'd say what I consider pass marks are:

13-14 wins

Making an early decision with the ruck situation and sticking with it. I want our next ruck combo (Simpson/West/Vardy) to get plenty of experience together this year.

Fast-tracking Duncan/Menzel/Motlop/Smedts/Christensen/Gillies/Brown/Simpson-West and anyone else who puts their hand up, so that the future core players of our club are all on track to get their 50th games by 2012-13 and on their way to 100 by the time Kelly/Bartel/Johnson are hanging them up.

Debuts for at least six of Smedts/Christensen/Brown/Guthrie/Simpkin/Horlin-Smith/Vardy/Drum (please) this year.

Semi-final or better.

Brown and Hawkins to combine for 60 goals.

Pods to improve goals from last year (i.e. 50+).

More players to do the team-first thing and follow Mooney's lead. There'll be a big send off for up to five greats of our modern era. Looking forward to saying thanks for the memories.

Rucks - Blake gets 1 game min , Ottens 4 games min. Once both have 100 games they then can only get games on current performance. West must get as many as possible no matter how he goes and , Vardy & Daw a sprinkling of the rest.

Id like 4 debutants thru the year min. perhaps from , Brown, Simpkin, Guthrie, Vardy, Smedts & George HS

Duncan & Menzel , 30 games min.

No carrying suspect senior players.

Drum to play some football.

I want our forwards to convert setshots at higher rate than last year

Depending on how the side is traveling , 1 or 2 mid year retirements. I also agree with VC some player falling back to help out in the V's would be great , just like McGrath did.

I know KPI's are meant to be specific and tangible, but here's what I'm looking for:

If we can look back on the season and confidently say it was the start of something, as opposed to the end, then it will have been a major success.

Agreed and well said.

In regard to the OP, everyone so far has listed what they want to achieve out of 2011 for which I agree with for the most part. However, the OP asked for indicators - stats etc which indicate that we are on the right track to reaching these goals. I'm sure there will be some, I just can't think of many at the moment. Is there a "disposals inside defensive 50?" I'd like to see that reduced; tackling numbers increased, kick to handball ratio reduced among others and as some others have posted, a minimum of 4 debutantes would be nice

there should be a 'like' button on bigfooty

Some

1. Selection policy-must must must must change. Scrap the games based on seniority and past deeds yada yada, pick the team on form each and every week regardless of how many 'names' end up in the VFL. If they can do this, we will benefit greatly, and if the MC lack the balls they should re-sign in favour of someone who can.
2. Stupid handball gone-while we must still attack, including by hand. It's gotta be forward. With frontal pressure, you can't afford lateral handball to a bloke standing flat footed with 5 other blokes within 10 metres of him. We failed on this in 2010 (particularly in the back half) and it must change now.
3. Sort out the rucks-we must must enter trade week at the end of this year with some knowledge of where our ruck division is at, and if we don't, we will have missed a trick. Blake must play VFL all year, and they must have the guts to drop Otto if he keeps slowing down. Time to find out whether Simpson and West are up to it (Vardy's still a colt)
4. Stop picking injured players-self explanatory really, relates to point one. Get your act together match committee.
5. Ressies must improve (agree with those who've said it) need to win more games and really make it a hungry driven side.
6. Get ruthless-success will come from making hard calls that will bring tears. Make them. Recognise you have to change 1 or 2 members of the back six, among other things, if you want to win the flag, and do it. Don't let those who are failing decide their exit date either. Mid season retirements are not necessarily the wrong decision (hopefully all within the club understand this).

1 - Direct kicks out of defence. Numbers at the fall and run and spread forward? We must find a way to beat the Magpies 'box' pressure system

I don't know whether i'm being too simple, but i still like what Fremantle did last year. They'd plonk Sandilands about 60m out and their designated kicker-inner would bomb it as long he could to Sandilands. If Sandilands couldn't mark it, then he'd try and smash it back towards his goal. A couple of times this happened the ball would be past the centre circle within a couple of seconds of being kicked in.

With Josh Hunt kicking it in each time, we'd easily get 65m-70m out from our defensive goal and if a pack formed which it generally would, then at the worst it'd go to a ball-up and a contested situation rather a free kick against for holding the ball as we try and handball our way out.

I guess from my perspective, I can see that if we get bundled out in the second week of the finals, I'll probably be a bit disappointed at the time. But geez, if we manage to tick off everything else that I'm looking for over the course of the season (a good VFL squad, six debuts, Brown to play some games, Hawkins to make a big jump in his production, West/Simpson and maybe Vardy to start featuring as a duo, if Ottens isn't up to it anymore etc.), it will be a major cause for optimism over the next five years.

no embarrassing losses to Pies or Saints like 2010
all positions on merit, specially ruck, if Blake or simpson are doing well in 2's and west or ottens is pox, blake or simpson gets a run
josh hunt to kick out every time as long as possible to someone that can mark it, like taylor
mackie to average at least 4 tackles a game
hawkins to average at least 3 goals each game
