I cannot speak highly enough of his game tonight. He wore Franklin like a glove all night and he did a FANTASTIC job!

He might not be the most talented player on the field but he does have exceptional footy IQ and ALWAYS gives everything he has! He can play in my team any day of the week and twice on sundays.

Great job tonight on Franklin, NN and I were talking about it at the game and didnt think he was right man for the job - I guess thats why we are forum users, and not AFL coaches though! I thought Kenny Mac may have got the job, but as it was, NC and his men made a great call. :thumbsu:

Great thread Stiffy. :thumbsu:

Massie has been great since his return. His ability to play on talls & smalls is now crucial with the Hound out.

For those who called for him to be dropped ahead of the likes of an inconsistent Mattner, I suggest you actually start watching the game.

Pulled Buddy's pants down tonight.

Not good for my Dream Team Kris. :p

Did a very good job.

However.....dont want to sound too negative, but he was helped hugely by the whole defensive team and the conditions. If he were 1 out it may of been different, but Stevens, Rutten, Stiffy and co just always got in the spaces and helped when it went into a marking contest.

Interesting comments by NC after saying that he felt Franklin was more of a fast agile player than a huge marker.

Anyhow I never would of thought Massie for the role. Great move.

... & Massie helped his team mates out too. That's what made it such a good effort by the defence tonight. Kris had a great game & I can't think of a negative.

Hats off to Craig and the boys for pulling a move that I don't think any of us saw coming. :thumbsu:

Massie turned out to be just the man to keep the most dangerous Hawk to a very ordinary game.

Well done to Massie who gives his heart and soul every time he puts on the jumper.

As Stiffy said, he has a very good footy brain and doesn't do too much wrong when he gets the pill.

Massie is a great example of the working man footballer. :thumbsu:

Massie has been great since coming back, and definitely will be our replacement for the Bass for the remainder of the season. To be honest though, I would have thought most defenders of Massie's calibre would have performed just as well on Franklin tonight. The delivery to him was poor and his team was just outplayed completely.

Massie has always been a favourite of mine :) 3 excellent games in a row. Often not noticed much, sort of like Jason Torney in a way, just goes about getting the job done.

HERE, HERE

Cant believe some on this board didnt see the value he adds to the side, is going to be very important to cover the loss of Bassett.

Hey I said it was an interesting move but I liked it ;) He has the brain to beat Franklin :D and he did. Craig afterwards said that the Swedish Superstar had played on Buddy before, anyone remember which game and what the outcome was?

Mass is one of those players that has trouble getting into the team but once he does he is impossible to drop :D

He was fantastic last night and tore Buddy a new one but the next step for Kris Massie is to perform up to that level week in week out – show some consistency and keep his body sound.

He was fantastic last night and many kudos to him for his game but I am still not convinced that he will be the long term answer to replacing Nathan Bassett, if others are so confident that he is the answer will he be given Nick Riewoldt next week?

I am not so sure about that!

What was impressive about Massie's game tonight was no neccessarily that he kept Franklin quiet but more so how he went about it. His positioning when the ball was coming in, reading the play better than his opponent and hence getting into a great position before his opponent.

Massie's game last night is not reflected by stats or how many goals or touches Franklin had but more so what he did in nullifying Franklin. The delivery could have been sensational and Massie would have still kept Franklin under control because of his smarts in the way he positions himself in those contests.

GREAT game by the best Swedish AFL player :D

I think that might have been a game in the NAB Cup a couple of years ago. That game in which Bock injured his back!

Ah but he doesn't have to be the replacement for Bassett. Bassett is a unique player that will be hard to replace. He is a bit taller than Massie and he is able to play on many different types of players.

Massie just needs to be himself and play to the best of his ability. He played some great games last year and he has had a couple of great ones this year. All Massie needs to do is continue his good form. If he is going to replace anyone long term it will be Torney who is approaching the time when he gets the tap on the shoulder. He is still playing well at this level but considering the state of our list, his retirement is not too far away.

Massie has a place in this team. If he performs as well as he did last year or better, he is still a very under-rated and useful player to have.

Exactly right and Massie will more fill the hole left by Torney rather than Bassett, Massie proved last night in playing the much taller Franklin that he has the abilty to shut down taller opponents, another feather in Massie's cap, Massie IMO has a huge future at the AFC.

Veyr underated footballer. I was dissapointed he wasn't given a go earlier in the season- He was an important player in our side last year and had a very very good season. Did a massive job on Buddy.

massie was certainly good, and he stuck to his task manfully. but lets be fair, Buddy just wasn't up for it. there was a guy who wasn't interested last night.

I like massie, a lot, but I can't help feel Franklin didn't fancy it either.

Different perspective at the game crow-mo to the limited vision on the replay.

Massie was very good at predicting where the ball was going to be coming from. The number of times he left Franklin to cover a team mate was sensational. BUddy was very frustrated for most of the game as he just couldn't get away / tried to lead all over the place to get a kick. His first kick from memory was actually in our back half when he went chasing the ball down there.

Massie was also very good at sticking to Buddy like a glove and the pressure from the midfield that meant the Hawthorn midfield was in two minds about what to do.
1. Where the hell am I meant to kick it as our guys are covered and our silly coach has left Stevens (1st qtr) and McLeod (2nd-4th qtr) free.
2. Bloody hell I need to kick it quick before one of those buggers in the blue, red and gold pulverise me. :D

My impression at the game was that we completely worried Hawthorn with the physical side of the game and they tried to get rid of it quickly.

perhaps Nikki, but lets not forget something; Buddy is faster, taller & probably stronger than Massie. If he really wanted to work to get free, he could have. he just didn't present.

I just feel he was a little complicit in his poor performance.
