I went down to training today and I was very impressed with Kurt Tippett.

I am happy to report he is out of the neck brace. Kurt spend the majority of the session away from the main group training with Bryce Campbell and Roo.

Kurt and Bryce started off running laps and then started doing a variety of handball drills with Roo which tested their agility and co ordination.

Kurt and Bryce also worked on their leading and marking - Kurt still has some work to do on his left foot kicking.

Near the end of the session, they joined the main group for leading and marking practice. Kurt also joined in with the ruckman for some light ruck drills. Just jumping into the ruck bag, tapping the ball down and collecting it off the ground.

Kurt isn't doing any physical contact work yet, but he did everything asked of him and moved very well. His skills and agility in the in close handball drills were quite good and he is a top mark. I don't know how far away he is from joining the main group full time but he's moving well enough to suggest he could go in there soon.

Westies fans could have a new cult hero on their hands here. Tippett is a monster and he looks like he could be a very handy addition to the Bloods.

I don't know what the story was with Bryce and Roo, must be little niggles. I think Roo joined the main group. Gill and Sellar must have been inside. Stiffy got on the end of a fierce tackle and went inside for a while. He returned and completed the day.

Gallman and Jericho must have had niggling injuries as well beacuse they were doing the same work as Bruce and Kurt.

I didn't recognise Jericho when I first saw him. I'd seen him not that long ago and my word he has changed. He has really worked on his physique - he looks like a senior player now. He's all muscle and hopefully he has worked on his confidence as well.

Turner ran laps for just about the whole three hour session.

I haven't been to pre season training since Gaz was coach so this was a bit different. They didn't play a game today, but they split into groups of three and four and did a variety of intense skills work. Mr Craig was not happy on a few occassions and asked for some drills to be restarted. All up they looks good and I'm keen to see them on Feb 16.

Thanks for that Jerome :thumbsu:

Great to hear Tippett is out of the neck brace. Very pleasing. Hopefully it wont be too long before he can get involved in the physical drills.

As for kicking on the left foot, who doesn't need practice? :p (McGregor, Reilly etc)

Sounds as though Stiffy got a hard knock from van Berlo but good to see he wasn't off for too long so there should be no worries there.

Need to get down to West Lakes one day myself and see the boys train. :thumbsu:

Thanks Jerome, great stuff. :thumbsu:

So disappointing that Campbell has been on a modified session the entire pre-season. Highly doubtful that he’ll play at AFL level this year, but that’s great for Norwood. ;)

How did Pfeiffer and Meesen train?

Always appreciate a training report :thumbsu:

Has Gill done any ball work this PS or simply run laps??

I have high hopes for Tippett ....the fact he's back in training is great news from his fitness POV and just getting a feel for gameplans and habits of his team mates.

Gee Kenny must be feeling the pinch a little ....Iam hoping for a good season ...we need him

What happened to Tippett to put him in a neck brace? Is he likely to play much AFL this year?

Update: Tippett injury

From afc.com.au

Injured Adelaide draftee Kurt Tippett should return to competitive training by mid-March.

Tippett, 19, has an undisplaced fracture in a cervical vertebrae (in his neck) and must wear a neck brace for six weeks.

“We were doing a pretty competitive drill at training, as you do, and it was just one of those things,” Tippett said. “I went down, put my head over the footy and got a bit of a bump to the head. I went off with a bit of a sore shoulder; I didn’t know that I’d done quite so much (damage).

“It’s tough watching (training). But it could have come at a worse time, like in the middle of the season. Right now I’m just working hard on the bike.”

Club doctor Andrew Potter said Tippett was expected to make a full recovery.

"He should be able to return to competitive football by three months," Dr Potter said. "While he is wearing the brace he will be able to remain active on the bikes."

Tippet was hurt in a collision at football training on Wednesday morning. No surgery was required and there is no neurological damage.

He was drafted in November from Southport, on Queensland’s Gold Coast, with the No 32 pick.

A super fit Sellar will make a HUGE difference ....no doubt he has the nous and skills. If he wasn't "really" fit b4 the championships then the illness would have devastated his fitness levels.

Seems the AFC will work on his fitness first and then look to further develop his skills later on.

I agree on Jericho, when I saw training he certainly had changed his shape and looked super fit.

Heres hoping for a big year from Jericho

Kenny went alright today and he also participated in the ruck drills. Looks like Kenny may be doing part time ruck work at HF or HB.

Both of them looked alright. I think Pfeiffer was being used as a defender.
There's no doubt the club will look to start his career off a HBF b4 moving into the midfield ala Van Berlo

And not to mention that he has actually played a heap of his football for Norwood as a defender

But he’s the perfect utility, can play as a rebounding defender, can kick a few goals up forward, but his ideal position is on the wing.

Rookie ready for action

Adelaide now

DOUG ROBERTSON

RANGY Adelaide rookie ruckman Kurt Tippett has had his neck brace removed and should be crashing into competitive training within two weeks.

The agile 200 cm, 98 kg, Tippett, 19, cracked a vertebrae in his neck in a training collision on December 13 and he was forced to wear the brace brace for six weeks.
But yesterday he was moving freely and is now ready to fulfil the potention that convinced the Crows to select the Queensland underage basketball star with their second selection in the national draft.

Tippett worked out alongside captain Mark Ricciuto - who had a relaxed week on the track because of a head cold - away from the main group.

There's no need to worry about Ricciuto either. The virus that sidelined him this week was definitely not related to the parvo-virus that ruined Ricciuto's season from round 20 last year.

Doctors allowed Tippett to throw away the neck brace about 10 days ago and Crows high performance fitness manager Stephen Schwerdt reckons there's no holding the big bloke back.

"It's remarkable how good it (neck) is," Schwerdt said.

"Obviously, it was a serious injury but Kurt has recovered really well and he should be able to start playing games by mid-March.

"He's done all the work we've asked of him and as far as the neck goes there's no issue."

West Adelaide claimed Tippett with the first pick in the SANFL mini-draft despite his neck injury. Coach Wayne Weidemann said then that medical specialists and the Crows medicos had predicted Tippett would make a full recovery.

Concentrating on reflex ball work and quick movement, the well-build Tippett showed eye-catching agility for his height.

He will travel with the Crows to Port Lincoln on Monday for a three-day camp and Schwerdt said he expected Tippett to begin competitive training in a fortnight.

Since December Tippett has kept fit by bike riding and he resumed hard running last week without any ill-effects.

Now the Southport (QAFL) premiership ruckman/forward needs to touch up his skills to AFL level - no easy task but Schwerdt says Tippett has the right attitude to succeed.

"He saw the surgeon last week and he was really happy with (Tippett)," Schwerdt said. "I'd say everything is on schedule."

Ricciuto, 32 in June, has also impressed Schwerdt, who said the rugged Crows skipper is enjoying his best pre-season in years.

all good news.....:thumbsu:
