What does Nicks see in him that he didn’t see in Riley knight?

Congratulations on playing 100. Hopefully he lifts a lot from last week's performance.

Definitely lifted.

Was one of the greatest 9 possession celebrations of 100 games I have seen. His one goal assist was testament to his efforts tonight.

Now has 20 touches, 0 goals, 0 behinds, 1 GA, 2 score involvements and 1 tackle inside 50 over the two games!!!

But I guess its all about his non statistical efforts!

His best non statistical effort was in the second quarter when we were down 24-6. Had a one on one on the wing. Bad kick by Geelong and Murphy completely misreads it diving and going to ground allowing the Geelong player to keep it in. His little unathletic legs tried so hard to catch the Geelong player, but he was unable to influence the contest resulting in a lace out pass to Hawkins.

There can be no defending him anymore. He simply cannot be in the best 22 next week.

I mean its gotten so bad even Mutineer isn't responding with laughing emoji's. Are you okay old mate?

Gryan Miers and Patrick Lipinksi come to mind immediately. Miers in particular is Murphy on steroids as a player.

Really, in a well functioning system, half forward is a very flexible role and is purely a response to what your core looks like. Have a lot of goal scorers? You want guys to push up and be an extra wingman.

What an apt comparison. Miers and Lipinski are the two players you suggested that play the Murphy role.

Lipinski - 22 touches, 6 marks, 2 goals, 2 tackles.
Miers - 26 touches, 4 marks, 3 goals, 3 tackles.
Murphy - 9 touches, 4 marks, 0 goals, 2 tackles.

And all of this talk about him being an extra midfielder - he has a Total of 3 clearances in 2024!

This is Nicks problem. Converting every small player in the side into midfielders is his obsession, like he is trying to reinvent the game. Is it working? Not in the slightest. Rankine and Rachele should be half forward flankers. Putting them in the middle seems to be wasting their talents by taking them away from goal. We want their skills around the forward contest. Laird is a great midfielder but he was a fluke. Started as a rookie back pocket / flanker from memory. Not all players make great mids the same way great mids dont make great forwards.

This thread's name should be changed to 'You wish you only had a Mackay problem!'

The good old days when the clubs punching bag for constant selection still used to be considered an ok footballer. Now we just wish he was a footballer.
I remember when 14 disposals was considered a pass mark for David

Apparently its now 9 in a non-statistical role

(waits for the usual suspect to mention Markov podcast comments)

I know it’s only small consolation - but I would bet it’s extremely rare that either Murphy or Sloane will be worst on ground in any game they play this year.

Has been bottom 3 worst on ground in Round 1 and Round 2. It's no consolation for leadership Murph.

Its amazing how his role wasn't non statistical when he lead the league in goal assists after round 5 last year. Had 8 in 4 games and everyone was talking about how valuable he was in that role.

Then he has only 6 goal assists in his next 20 games and suddenly we are back to him performing his KPI's in a completely undefined role that only the coaches and his supporters know what it is.

I thought his value was how he can help out our midfield as a crafty little clearance specialist. Has 3 clearances so far this year.

Can any of his supporters identify what his role actually is?

And this has been my argument about Murphy. He’s been dropped once a year and he’s not dropped after one poor game, so we have to sustain a period of poor form before we eventually drop him. Then we rush him back.

I just don’t get what the coaches fascination with him is
