If Collingwood and North can play for a average player whose only claim to fame that he had a stroke of misfortune. Then I think it's a time to spread the idea around. Next off the cab should be the LA medal between Adelaide and Carlton, if only because neither team have a hope of winning anything else this season. I'm personally looking forward to the Kent Kingsley medal match between Geelong and North.

When we play Essendon in a few weeks can we please play for the David Calthorpe medal .

What a stroke of genius it was to get that gem of a player. We delisted our winner of the best 1st year player for him.

Good one Lehal.

I recall Simon Black as best 1st yr player for the Lion in 1998, Derek Wirth was the "Cub of the year"

Agreed that Calthorpe was a dud.

Likewise, we need a Stefan Carey Medal for Lions/Swans outings.

I remember this same "why is it necessary" crap brought up last year for the Winmar Cup between WCE and St Kilda. This year, the cup (more of a coloured plate, really) had extra significance, as Xavier Clarke and Alan Murray used the opportunity to promote thier new foundation for homeless Aboriginal kids.

Give them something to play for, but I reckon it should be tied to a cause to give it more meaning. The Blue Ribbon Cup between us and Hawthorn is a great gesture by the AFL and the clubs to help the Blue Ribbon Foundation charity.

By all means play for club Vs club cups, but tie them to a good cause to at least do something for the wider community.

The medal commemorates an average footballer who did something extraordinary away from football. Maybe the Toowong W@nkers can compete with the Bourke Morons for the Jim Boy Cup, commemorating that special person who is not fit to be mentioned in the same sentence as those who he tries to belittle.

Standing behind the goals at the Barkly Street end at the Richmond game of 1990, I heard this bloke announce to the world (his timing perfect as there was a lull in the crowd)

" Come on Scray - the Drink Drive Bloody Idiot Cup is at stake here"

Port and Collingwood can play for the Nick Stevens Medal.

Winner gets nothing, and abused for getting nothing.

Those are pretty good.

Hawthorn v Bulldogs: The Hunter/Cox Medal

Sydney v Essendon surely have to play for the Ben Doolan Medal. Failing that what about Ed Considine.
