To return to my original comment - in my opinion - cricket plays less importance to British culture than Australian culture. Further - sport in general.

So much stuff out there - politics, literature, film, other sports - to worry about what whether Ronnie Irani goes for 12 an over (disappointing as that is!!!!)

Have you ever heard of a little program called Neighbours?! And I suppose you are going to suggest there was no artistic substance to The Ted Mulry Gang? Don't speak to us about culture mate - we've got a shi tload of it.

btw - Ronnie Irani going for 12 an over is not news. Ronnie Irani going reaching double figures is news.;)

My thoughts on the issue - earlier used elsewhere.

I am one of Boof's biggest fans.

However, I believe he got what he deserved in that he made a blatantly racist remark, after he had a couple of minutes to calm down on the way back to the dressing room.

The fact that remark was racist, has not been argued by anybody (with half a brain)

Under the ICC Code of Conduct, insutling or offending someone due to their race is either a level 3 or a level 4 offence.

Level 3 offences carry a MINIMUM sentence of 4 matches.

Level 4 carry a maximum sentence of a life ban.

Personally I can't see how racism could be any lower than a level 3 offence

A level 2 offence is merely insulting someone in general. It seems clear that a racial comment is much worse than a merely personal comment about your cricketing ability or where you went to school etc etc.

At the end of the day five one day matches isn't a lot when you think about how many games are played these days and it sends a strong message.

For those of you who say that it would be different if the comment was directed against a white person - I ask that you provide evidence?????

I am positive if it was the other way it would have been dealt with in the same manner.

That sort of response is just a cliche from people trying to justify behaviour which is clearly not justified.

Darren himself has not denied the charge and therefore under the rules he had to get at least four games.

Its all fair and above borard.

Some of the reaction on the sub-continet and even in our own papers has however been completely over the top.

Making a comment which is racist, does not make you a racist in my view.

Everyone can lose their cool, and unfortunately Darren did that, and in a very inappropraite manner for someone who is a role model for so many people and in the public eye.

I am sure he will learn a lot from the incident.

He will be back for the world cup. Lets hope the finals go down to best of 3.

i agree with your point that racist remarks can be said by those who are not racist. using the word black, fat, ugly, **** can add strength to the severity of what is said, and at times of anger, you want to let loose with any kind of expletive you can lay your toungue around.

people who dont swear often yell f*** if they do something stupid, and ive done this many a time. i yell it out when someone drops a dolly in slips and then immediately wished i didnt. we can all do and say stupid things when the adrenalin is pumping. but then on the other hand, im not going to try and argue that lehmann is not a racist (he strikes me as the type of guy who would be to be quite honest, just like warney and the scott muller incident. i said to my dad "i bet warney said it" before i even heard the audio. likewise my guess at who had the racist stab in the current team would have been lehmann)
