Leon Davis to be our number one clearance player in 09.

Your thoughts?

I'd prefer to have him receiving it, watching him dance then delivering into the fwd line or kicking those miraculous goals. Don't want him on the bottom of packs too often.
You dont have to be on your hands and knees at the bottom of a pack to be a clearance player i.e Judd, Hodge etc

Neon constantly referred to as one of our best players so may have merit. But I think on the big stage he thrives on instinct rather than being a workhorse.
His attitude and game may have changed in the past few seasons, but deep down he's still a finger-shaking crowd-pleaser ... and he pleases me as he is. :)

He was third overall. So i see no reason why he cant be number one, if he is given plenty of time in the midfield.

He is clean with his disposal and is able to wiggle out of tricky situations. He could do it if given the chance. He did it well in the games he was given the chance to in 2008, especially late in the season.

I guess it's unlikely but I'd love to see JMac in the top few clearance players for us!!

Id say 2010 will be his breakout year, hopefully he just develops further this year, and when he hits 20 he can explode.

High hopes for Jmac and Barham.

Unless Wood or Fraser develop into a dominate tap ruckmen I really can't see it being a good thing for us if Leon is our number one clearance player.

Not underestimating his ability around the stoppages. He has a natural instinct on where to run, runs straight through and is such a clean one touch player. However if our rucks a flogged in the middle we are really going to need a guy like Stanley, O'Bree or Swan and realistically all three getting big numbers of clearances simply with hard work and muscle. Getting in and under. The other guy that will help us with big clearance numbers is Pendles, his another in the O'Bree mould of finding the ball in tight with smarts rather then just bustling through with muscle.

If Leon's our number one clearance player and our rucks have another in the long run of average seasons, It probably means we are getting flogged in the middle.

I think you are underestimating Leon.

He doesn't just swoop through and try to take the ball away - He's one of our top tacklers as well, which means that he's up for the dirty work required.

He certainly has the ability to be a Shaun Burgoyne-style clearance player, as has been mentioned.

Shaun Burgoyne has had the help of a lot of good tap ruckmen over his career wouldn't you say. Lade being the most obvious Brogan is no mug in that department either.

I think you are reading what I am saying wrong. Unless we have a good tap ruckmen we need tough hands and knees strong big body bottom of the pack clearances players slugging it out and getting big numbers. Through sheer size alone Leon probably couldn't play that role. Add to that the fact that his more value running then tied up at the bottom of a pack.
