Let's all pause and reflect on Yarran

All this negative talk about Freo. All this media speculation on Fyfe, Ballas the club etc.

Today I did something I haven't done in a while.

I found the footy and headed down to the oval. Sure I needed to find the pump and needle and it was nearly enough to deter me from this expedition, but I found some inner drive and after what seemed an eternity in the shed (roughly 90 seconds) I was on my way.

At 38 years of age I'm over pretending there's a huge crowd and I'm going back to slot one in front of thousands of cheering fans, but I did try to replicate Shane Yarran's set shot from 50m near the boundary.

I had to cross to the other side of the ground so I could shoot with what was a pretty stiff breeze at my back (anything to cover the distance). Without a warm up I set myself up. The whole time Yarran's punt going through my head.

Knowing my limitations I won't fool anyone in pretending I struck one from outside 50m, instead using the 50m as my starting point. I ambled in, with a too cool for school approach trying to replicate Shane. With a slight deviation to the right to really sink the foot into it I let rip from 42m out.

As it went sailing into the stratosphere, I paused and reflected on the magnificence of Yarran's kick. That beautifully timed punt that started at the right goal post and then straightened as if instructed to do so. The one that sailed over the umpires head and into the crowd. The one that confirmed to all that if this kid gets it anywhere near or inside 50m we can share his confidence on a set shot. One of the best timed kicks on goal I've seen in a long time.

When my ball fell short by about 7m and slightly hooked to the left I wasn't fazed. Instead I looked at my hands, as if to suggest they didn't have enough grip. I tied up my laces and went back to fire again.

A genuine behind from the same spot was achieved on my 4th kick. Sure it was to the near side and cleared the line by inches, but at that point I knew I could get there.

On my approach from set shot 7 I felt adequately warmed up and had adjusted my run up to include a slight jog in. I was still kicking from 42m out and if anything had made my angle harder as if to say the prior kicks were beneath me.

Flushed it! You know the feeling when you just nail it and drive the ball goalwards. The only question was did it have the legs. Just clear the line by 20cm I said to myself, that's all I need. Well it pissed it in... clearing the line by a solid 40cm, which at my age and from that distance is as good as post high.

I've had my say about Yarran when he slipped up. I was vocal in everything negative about him, but I haven't gone out to kick a footy based on anyone for a long time and if I mentioned who the player was I'd be laughed at, as he was an Eagle and from a time long ago.

Thank you Shane Yarran for making an old bloke dream again.

Maybe you didn't pump up the ball hard enough. Rookie mistake.

Great post cobbler. Best thing about that 1st quarter was just enjoying entertaining footy from our side. First time since mid last year.

Mate take this post and shove it. Understand the tone of the thread. It's one of hope and one about the future. Regardless of age, he provides both albeit in your view a short term one. He might only play a handful of games or enjoy a 100 game career. I'll enjoy whatever ride he provides.

You can take your tone to any one of our other threads. Doom and gloom everywhere and fair enough to vent in those threads.

Yarran genuinely inspired me to get off my arse. That in itself defies belief. The kick of the football highlighted how unfit I am and has made me decide to go for a jog tomorrow morning. All from one kick.

Chris Mayne makes me want to drink and is a shining light for being a role model.

Yarran makes me want to kick a footy and get fit, but has a questionable back ground.

Go figure!

Inspiration can come in any form and in any way someone sees fit.
Ok sorry - so you just want everyone to applaud your post.

Good post bro, enjoy your run tomorrow.

Nah the ball was pumped to perfection. More a case of I just assumed I could walk in and flush one without any warm up or even having kicked a footy in a fair while. By the end of the session I was striking a few from 50m out on the 45 degree angle and the breeze behind me. Tried a few from the 50m and boundary intersection, but that proved impossible.

45m is about my length when warmed up.

No. They can do as they please with it. Read it, ignore it, 'like it', applaud it or do as you have done and turn it into a negative.

I thought with that much around the club and in our forums it would be nice to have a thread that celebrates something good. You just decided to turn it into a negative.

That's ok.

You're the only one to have done so.

I think that might help our cause with our slow midfield
SPS isn't that quick if you recall from what you may remember when you last saw him play. My comments also apply to whomever agrees with you .

He won't be part of our next premiership tilt though at 27 years of age. Would be disappointed if he plays a game next season ahead of some younger blokes we pick in the draft.
Yarran is quicker and has better kicking skills than Kevin KB Bartlett ever had and he played for Richmond till he was in his mid 30s but Yaz has a body that hasn't been beat up from the rigours of playing footy at AFL level.

My avatar is a colour splash pic of yarran which took me a while... Nuff said. Hes my favorite.
What is colour splash?

He's not overly quick but doesn't need to be as knows how to get out of traffic effortlessly. I want this bloke. Be a goal kicking midfield :)

9 goals in 5 games.

Shane is our leading goalscorer by average.

Let me repeat that.... In his first 5 games of AFL coming off a major knee injury playing in a depleted team struggling with form and structure Shane Yarran has kicked 9 goals in 5 games and is now leading our team in goals per game this season.

Awesome post mate,loved it!

On to Shane Yarran.I'm going to love every second watching him play for how ever long his career runs.

We could have quite an exciting forward line with Yazz,McCarthy,Walters & Bennell hopefully playing together in 2017.

Did he say that ?

Yep, the first comment early in the game, met with slightly awkward silence from Adam Papalia before the penny dropped.

The second comment at 1/4 time or early 2nd qtr I think that comment may have been just ignored.

Dermie is like the drunken uncle of the commentary team.

But that doesn't explain why he would suggest Chris is faster than Shane; That's just ridiculous.
It was a little baffling since clearly the opposite is true. Still Dermie might be a piss addled, casually racist, egotistical old f*ckwit who is too lazy to do any preparatory research, but is a good judge of talent.

Fyfe also kicked 9 from 5 games. Fyfe did play a half less due to breaking his leg.
