fairfax lol..

silly thread, we are in trouble this year tho.

IMO we need to throw $$$ at an up and coming KF in the next 2 years. like Sydney did with mumford because they needed a young ruck

He is talking about about over consecutive years genius very hard to argue otherwise :(

Because we went all out 100% to try and avoid last in 2009

Mate, We are the worst wooden spooners since Fitzroy. If Watts does turn out to be a dud. Then what? Who will kick our goals? Bate? Wona? No chance.

IMO Everything rides on Jack Watts.

You're a ********! Worst woodenspooners since Fitzroy? Carlton and StKilda would have something to say about that. Watts will not turn out to be a dud. He's played 3 games for ****sake, get off this kids back. I can't believe Melbourne supporters like you are acting like Bay 13 dogs.

GET OFF JACK WATTS BACK!

I spoke to Lukey Power last year after the Dees game at the Gabba, and he flat out told me Jack Watts will be a gun. The speed and agility alone will make sure he's a very good player up forward for us! His accuracy in front of goal is a massive bonus, one that Nick Reiwoldt could use. Watts is 6 foot 4 and he can crumb off the deck as good as he can mark out on a lead. A bit of muscle and some game time with the rest of our young list, and yes, some patience, and we will see at least a very very good player for the MFC. Some place Watts in the mold of a Reiwoldt, and yes, there are some similarities, but I think he's more of a James Hird type of player. Time will tell if he's anywhere near as good, but give the kid some breathing space. Scully, Morton, Trengove, Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Benell, Grimes,Gysberts, Sylvia, Davey will be delivering the ball to him in the future. Look at the bright side before looking at the darkness. I can understand peoples negativity towards the Dees, I'm 36 years old and am still waiting to see us win the ultimate prize, but I have faith in this young list we have right now, including Jack Watts and I for one can't wait to ride this rollercoaster towards our first flag in a very long time!!!

Yep hats off Crusty Dee! A great post. Like the news of Jurrahs injury today there will be ups and downs, but i have been watching footy for quite a while and i can see a lot to be excited about in the list we have now got together!

And BS, seriously are you 12 years old?

I understand your frustration but your arguement loses all credibility when you bring up the Watts/Natanui comparison.

We drafted Watts as a long term prospect- Key position players aren't made over night. A key forward is far more important than a good ruckman, you don't see key ruckmans win premierships or finals.

Its quite disillusional to expect Watts to be ready made after beig a part-time footballer, his only just done his first pre-season. He played 3 senior games and people are already starting to question why we didnt take Natinui over him based on these three games of AFL football, its bordering hysterical! Natinui is already physically advanced in his development than Jack so its not a surprise his come along nicely and in addition, he was a full-time professional footballer in his first season.

On to the other points you make. As strange as this sounds in light of our on field performances in recent seasonm, I am confident in the direction the club is taking. For the first time ever since I ve supported the club, we have made our intentions clear for both off and on field performance.

On field, Bailey has told all supporters what his aims are. To develop the kids. This has come at a cost starting wit the obvious but we've also removed alot of dead wood on our list. In comparison, under Daniher there was never a distinct direction, we floated from year to year. Bar 2000, we were always just making up the numbers in the years we made the finals and carried alot of dead wood. I understand your concerns about a number of our players who have been round for handful of seasons not developing but at the same time there have been a number of players that have come along under Bailey- Notably Davey, Sylvia, Frawley, Warnock, Garland, Grimes and Morton.

Off field it appears we are the most stable we have been for some time. Initiatives taken by the current board to make in-roads due to previous administration errors and lack of foresight have finally seen the Club resemble a modern day football club. The decision to re-establish ourselves as an arm of the MCC is symbolic but also important to secure our financial security at the MCG. To align ourselves with Casey and train over the preseason is a stratgeically sound move, we need to tap into a new supporter base and its the biggest growth corridor in the city. Debt demolition was another proactive move which in hindsight was fortunate timing, a month before the GFC imploded with Lehman Brothers collapsing.

But all these moves and initiatives done by the club signal to me that we are no longer sitting on our hands- which we've been guilty of for so many years We finally have some presence and off field respectability with the likes of Stynes and Schwab at the helm which is important in our situation, particularly with the AFL.

So upon review, I have to disagree with everything you've said. However your enthusiasm and passion is something this club can ill-afford to lose and it something we need more of.

P.S. Sorry for this long post but I havent posted in some time.

Hey guys just having a read.

Jack Watts is the real deal. You guys got an exciting young list with many wins to come in the near future.

Grimes, Scully, Trengrove, Blease, Gysberts. Prob a couple of years away but there's a fair bit of class there.

With people like Jim Stynes at the club I think you guys are in a good position off field and on field. (from my outsider view).

Good luck this year dees. Think you could win anywhere between 2-8 games.

Comrade Cheney.

Like everyone, I am devastated by Jurrah's injury. It reminds me of Brian Wilson breaking his arm in a 1983 pre-season match, just after he had won his Brownlow. Bugger.

I also would have preferred NicNat over Watts but I am still damn glad that we have the latter. He'll be a champion. When JW gets going he will be very hard to stop.

Yep, Bell & Bartram are "mega spuds" - and the latter should be stripped of the number 3 jumper and given 53 instead - but show me a club that does not have their counterparts on a list.

I am becoming increasingly aligned to your view that Bailey is a dud, no matter how impressively he conducts himself in the media. I have not seen any real improvement over the past two years. There was no reason to give him an extension yet - and I suspect it is going to end badly. And James McDonald - a solid, mild mannered footballer in the twilight of his career - is surely the most anonymous captain I have seen in my time and the last thing we need if we are to exorcise the blandness from the club in the eyes of the wider community.

Our real achilles heel is this: our lack of mental toughness. You should have led with this argument.

Cast your mind back to the first game of 2007 when Brock was injured in the first quarter: the team's petticoats dropped to the ground & that was it for the season (and yes, I know, the list was ageing and doomed to self-destruct sooner or later). There are plenty of other examples I could throw into the mix. Until we toughen up mentally, we are going nowhere as a club. That is why the Jurrah injury - a bugger that it is - is an invitation to the other guys to step up to the plate. Will they do it?

I don't give a stuff about losing - that is the nature of the game - but my god I want them to fight (and not just at the MCG) and let the opposition know that they have to earn every damn point. Instill that attitude and the scoreboard will take care of itself.

Didn't know what to think when I first saw this thread and I still don't.

Amongst the diatribe, cheney makes some valid points.

Well I worked out Cheney is menstrating, and Super is a covert Carlton supporter.

Fairfax, I cannot understand why you are so angry? Were you bullied in high school? (or maybe your still there) Didn't your parents give you enough love & attention? If your not willing to contribute to this discussion in a respectful manner i suggest your **** off and stop wasting everybody's time. Oh, don't forget to check that torrets out.

I agree with Cheney with the exception of Watts. Even though we are improving off the field with our debt reduced, Casey and Bubbledome. We still seem to be 5+ years behind everyone else.
On the field who knows how long it's gonna take? We have no run out of the backline, no good clearance players, no dominating ruckman and even if Watts becomes the player we hope he can be we are still a key forward short. Ideally Jurrah and Bate would be our 3rd and 4th forward. That could change quickly but that is still a massive amount of work for Bailey to do in 2 years. He will be a miracle worker if he can do it.

If Naitanui was playing for Melbourne he would probably be injured by now cos that is just what happens at Melbourne. If you know how to play you will be riddled with injury, that is why Miller is never injured. Let's just wait until we can get Watts out onto the park before we compare.

Stinga,
Thanks for your post. Stinga, by all means i am not comparing Watts & Natanui in footballing abilty, you cant, there totally different footballers. My concern is that the club, IMO might of overlooked the fact that we probably needed a quality ruckman before a key forward. Imagine the centre square in 5 years- Niknat, trengrove, scully, gysberts ect.. Unstoppable!!
I strongly believe that you win premierships out of the middle, as geelong have proven, and IMO Niknat was the pivitol ingredient. It's quite obvious that we also need a power forward, but lets be honest, from what ive seen Natinui could rest at FF and be just as dangerous and effective in 5 years as Watts!!
Mate, footballers in Natinui's mould don't come around very often, he is a freak of nature and i've never seen a footballer with his height, leap and speed for a long, long time. Im just worried how he could make us look this weekend!

No we definitely needed a key forward much more than a ruckman. You can develop a ruckman pretty much from nowhere and win a flag with an average ruckman, but you can't develop a star key forward without a ton of ability and you need a good one to win a flag

Or, which is probably the plan, trade for one...
