100, 200, 400, 1500m, Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Individual medley, relay.

But how many swimmers are elite in every stroke over such an array of distances? None ever compared to this guy.

My kid is elite in this state for his agegroup(11-12yo) and coaches are already suggesting which strokes to drop and which distances to focus on.
Phelps is an absolute freak of nature and quite possibly the greatest athlete to ever walk the global surface.

I'm not doubting his ability, but Swimming and Athletics are really the only two competitions that allow you to rack up 4+ gold medals at each olympics.

If he was the greatest ever weightlifter in his division, you can only win one gold medal per olympics.

Swimming is one of those sports where medals can be racked up easily. I would rank Bolts efforts alongside Phelps. Winning the Marathon would rank as just a hard of a feat.

Played both NFL and MLB and was an All-Star for each sport. Even the great Michael Jordan tried that and failed. From memory, he was even an elite track & field athlete in college. The kind of bloke that could pick a sport and excel at it.

Now that is a contender for greatest athlete to ever walk the earth.

Running: 100m, 110m hurdles, 4x100m relay, 200m, 200m hurdles, 4x200m relay, 400m, 400m hurdles, 4x400m relay, 800m, 1500m, long jump, triple jump (sprinters have also competed in the jump events).
That's 13.

No, watched that live in PE in grade 11. Was great. There were plenty of superstars playing back then but it was before the NBA really went global in coverage. So the natural mindset was to fire up and pressure them. The Aussie way. But in the 00s when coverage went global, players who grew up watching these superstars got star struck. The players were more interested in watching the show put on by bryant then stopping him. The current squad wont give USA any where near as much time and will make them earn it.
